  • One of the best methods to evaluate crashworthiness of a full rake trainset is to analyse 1-dimensional dynamic model using dampers, nonlinear springs and bars, and masses. In this study, the crashworthiness of KHST has been evaluated by analysing a nonlinear dynamic model made up of springs/bars-dampers-masses. The numerical results show that the KHST can absorb more kinetic energy at lower impact forces and lower accelerations in case of heavy collisions, if compared with KTX. Also, the KHST can be protected from any damage in its car-body and electric components except the energy absorbing tube in case of light collisions, like train-to-train accidents at speed under 8 kph. On the other hand, the KTX may be more damaged in the light collisions because there is no energy absorbing tube.

  • A method of dopant implantation by low temperatme diffusion with ion collisions as well as the mechanism of its apparatus is to be introduced. The implantillg function is mainly based on the Principle of radiation enhanced diffusion due to the collisions of low energy Particles and the preheating of the substrate in an environment of rarefied air plasma. The implanted results of various dopants into semicondctors by the Implanter are also presented.

  • The position of the automobile seat back is very important for the neck injury in the rear-end collisions. The effects of the position have been evaluated experimentally. A sled simulator is utilized with a velocity of 33 km/h. The position is varied by the angle of seat back from 25 to 65 degrees. All the configurations of the seat are fixed except the angle. The neck injuries are calculated by the equations accepted in the industries. Also, the sled tests with other velocities are carried out for the comparison study. Using the results of the test, the effects of seat back strength are discussed to minimize the occupant neck injury in rear end collisions.

  • Background: Truck driving is known as one of the occupations with the highest accident rate. This study investigates the characteristics of traffic collisions according to road types (expressway and rural road). Methods: Classifying 267 accidents into expressway and rural road, we analyzed them based on driver characteristics (age, working experience, size of employment), time characteristics (day of accident, time, weather), and accident characteristics (accident causes, accident locations, accident types, driving conditions). Results: When we compared the accidents by road conditions, no differences were found between the driver characteristics. However, from the accident characteristics, the injured person distributions were different by the road conditions. In particular, driving while drowsy is shown to be highly related with the accident characteristics. Conclusion: This study can be used as a guideline and a base line to develop a plan of action to prevent traffic accidents. It can also help to prepare formal regulations about a truck driver's vehicle maintenance and driving attitude for a precaution on road accidents.

  • In an attempt to understand the nature of hyperthermal ion-surface collisions, noble gas ion beams (He+, Ne+, Ar+, and Xe+) are scattered from a Si(100) surface for collision energies of 20-300 eV and for 45°incidence angle. The scattered ions are mass-analyzed using a quadrupole mass spectrometer and their kinetic energy is measured in a time-of-flight mode. The scattering event for He+ and Ne+ can be approximated as a sequence of quasi-binary collisions with individual Si atoms for high collision energies (Ei > 100 eV), but it becomes of a many-body nature for lower energies, Ar+ and Xe+ ions undergo mutliple large impact parameter collisions with the surface atoms. The effective mass of a surface that these heavy ions experience during the collision increases drastically for low beam energies.

  • Through this study, 2D multibody dynamics models for analysis of train collisions have been developed to evaluate the crashworthiness requirements of the TSI regulation. The crashworthiness regulation requires some performance requirements for two heavy collision accident scenarios; a train-to-train collision at the relative speed of 36 kph, and a collision against a standard deformable obstacle of 15 ton at 110 kph. The complete train set will be composed of hybrid model with 2D and 1D model. Using numerical analysis of the hybrid model, some crashworthy design were evaluated in terms of mean crush forces and energy absorptions for main crushable structures and devices. especially, 2D model can evaluate overriding effect in train collisions. It is shown from the simulation results that the suggested hybrid model can easily evaluate the crashworthiness requirements.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the circumstances surrounding collisions involving ambulances with an aim to improving the safe operation of emergency services. Collisions are relatively common within paramedic emergency services. We analyzed the time, injury site, and any other specific factors of 908 collisions occurring within four cities. Within our study 29.6% of paramedics have been involved in accidents while responding to an emergency call, with the main cause of the accident being signal violation (35.7%), and is the other party's negligence (22.2%). 92.1% of these accidents occurred while the emergency lights were being operated. XX% of accidents took place in the afternoon, while xx% took place within the hours of xx:xx and xx:xx, during which time there is generally lower levels of traffic, which can cause severe brain and neck damage of 14.4% but the other part is 62.1%. (Ed note; this is not clear at all. 14.4% of collisions resulted in severe head and neck injuries, while 23.5% of collisions resulted in no injury. According to the respondents, defensive driving (xx%), observance of traffic laws (xx%), safe driving habits (xx%)to paramedics were the most critical factors in evading collision. Signal passes were identified as the most common cause of collision (70.1%). Although the majority of collisions occurred while the emergency lights were operational, the damage can cause severe damage at the time of accident occurred.

  • As the number of reported injuries has tended to increase over time, large hospitalization expenditure from excessive medical treatments and hospitalization, and insurance frauds associated with moral hazard in minor collisions have caused a global societal problem. Many occupants of rear-ended vehicles involved in rear-end collisions complain of whiplash injury, which is also known as neck injury, without any anatomical and radiological evidence. With only clinical symptoms, stating that a whiplash injury is a type of injury defined by the Abbreviated Injury Scale would be difficult. Therefore, this study focuses on minor rear-end collisions, where the rear-ender vehicle collides with the rear-ended vehicle at rest. The mathematics dynamic model is employed to simulate a total of 100 rear-end collision scenarios based on various weights and collision speeds and identify how the weights and speeds of both vehicles influence the risk of whiplash injury in occupants involved in minor rear-end collisions. The possibility of an injury is very high when the same-weight vehicles are involved in accidents at collision speeds of 15 km/h or higher. The possibilities are 36% and 84% with collision speeds of 15 km/h and 20 km/h, respectively, if weights are disregarded.

  • We studied aluminum cluster deposition using molecular dynamics simulation. We investigated the variations of the cluster momentum and the impulse force during collisions, and found that the close-packed cluster impact has some of properties of the single particle collision and the linear chain collisions. We also simulated the series of energetic cluster deposition with energy Per atom. When energy Per atom in cluster has some eV rather than very low, the intermixing occurred easily in growth film and we can obtain a good film without subsequent annealing process.

  • A simple time-delay method for avoiding collisions between two articulated robot manipulators is proposed. Links of robot are approximated by polyhedra and the danger of collision between two robots is expressed by distances between the robots. An algorithm, which can fast obtain the minimum time-delay value needed for collision avoidance, using scheme of following the boundary contour of collision region in the collision map which has information about collisions between two robots, is described.
