  • Identifying the load and mutual inductance is essential for improving the power transfer capability and power transfer efficiency of Inductive Power Transfer (IPT) systems. In this paper, a steady-state load and mutual inductance identification method focusing on series-parallel compensated IPT systems is proposed. The identification model is established according to the steady-state characteristics of the system. Furthermore, two sets of identification results are obtained, and then they are analyzed in detail to eliminate the untrue one. In addition, the identification method can be achieved without extra circuits so that it does not increase the complexity of the system or the control difficulty. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed method has been verified by simulation and experimental results.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) uniformly heated in the horizontal circular smooth tube. The results illustrated that there was a significant difference in heat transfer between the top wall and bottom wall due to the buoyancy. Bulk flow acceleration cannot be negligible in the high heat flux region, which leads to heat transfer deterioration. A new heat transfer correlation is proposed, in which the buoyancy parameter and bulk flow acceleration have been taken into account. The new correlation and six classic correlations for sCO2 are examined in horizontal tubes. The comparison indicates that the new correlation has a better performance for sCO2 flowing through a horizontal heating tube under natural circulation conditions. For example, 94.9% of the calculated results using the new heat transfer correlation were within ±30% of the experimental results while only 87.9% of that using the Jackson correlation (the best of the six) were within the same error bands.

  • Objective: To assess compliance with Korean guidelines for embryo transfer, the possible reasons for non-compliance, and multiple pregnancies according to each specific condition in compliant cycles. Methods: A single-institution, retrospective study was conducted of 256 fresh in vitro fertilization cycles during 2012-2014. To assess compliance with Korean guidelines, the maximum recommended number of embryos transferred (according to criteria of age, transfer day, and presence of favorable conditions) was compared with the actual number of embryos transferred. Clinical pregnancy rate (PR) was assessed as the percentage of pregnant women resulting from each set of transfer conditions, including the number of embryos transferred. The multiple pregnancy rate (MPR) was calculated as the percentage of pregnant women with a multifetal pregnancy. Results: The compliance rate with the Korean guidelines was 96.5% (247/256). Non-compliance occurred in nine cycles owing to poor embryo quality, repeated implantation failure, or hostile endometrium. In compliant cycles, the PR was 31.2% (77/247), and the MPR was 27.3% (21/77; 20 twins and one triplet). Higher MPR was noted in two types of transfer conditions: transfer of three cleavage embryos in women aged 35-39 years with favorable conditions (66.7%; primarily from those aged 35-37 years) and transfer of two blastocysts in women aged ${\geq}40$ years with favorable conditions (50%). Conclusion: Under the Korean guidelines, compliance rate was high in our center. Multiple pregnancies occurred primarily in group with favorable conditions. In high-risk groups for multiple pregnancies, reducing number of embryos transferred should be considered than suggested in the guideline.

  • Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in woman. Unfortunately, the frequency of breast cancer and mastectomy are increasing in Korea. This paper introduces the breast reconstruction by use of pectoralis major muscle transfer with breast implant for small size defect after skin sparing mastectomy for more satisfaction. We reviewed 24 consecutive patients who underwent breast reconstruction by pectoralis major muscle transfer with implant and only breast implant in Dong-A University from April 2002 to March 2004. The patient's age ranged between 29 and 54 years with mean of 42.3 years. We used pectorals major muscle transfer with breast implant in 12 patients and breast implant alone in 12 patients as control. The follow-up period of patients ranged from 10 months to 3 years with mean of 18.5 months. The points of comparison with control group reconstructed by breast implant alone were doctor and patient satisfaction score, operation time, duration of admission, amount of drainage, complication and satisfaction according to mass location. In conclusion, there is no difference with control group in the point of operation time, mount of drainage, duration of admission. And there is higher level of doctor's and patient's satisfaction in group reconstructed by pectoralis major muscle transfer with breast implant than implant only group. Especially, pectoralis major muscle transfer with breast implant was especially necessary for the defect in upper lateral quadrant of the breast to get more satisfaction. The advantage of pectoralis major muscle transfer with breast implant is prevention of the protruding and palpability of implant and aesthetically satisfactory result by intraoperative modification of breast shape.

  • In single-phase magnetically coupled resonant (MCR) wireless power transfer (WPT) systems, the transfer characteristics, including the output power and transfer efficiency, are significantly influenced by the spatial scales of its coils. As a potential alternative, a three-phase MCR WPT system with cylinder-shaped coils that are excited in a voltage-fed manner has been proposed to satisfy the requirements of compact space. This system adopts a phase-shifted angle control scheme to generate a rotating magnetic field and to realize omnidirectional WPT that is immune to spatial scales. The magnetic field model and equivalent circuit models are built to holistically analyze the system characteristics under different angular misalignments. Research results show that the transfer characteristics can be improved by modulating the phase-shifted angle in each phase. Experiments have also been carried out to evaluate the accuracy of the theoretical analysis and to confirm the validity of the system modeling method.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of recipient activation time on the nuclear remodeling, chromatin structure, pronuclear formation and in vitro development of bovine nuclear transfer embryos derived from adult ear skin cells. Somatic cells were transferred to enucleated oocytes after quiescent treatments by serum starvation or culture to confluency. Nuclear transfer embryos were activated with a combination of Ca/sup 2+/-ionophore and cycloheximide at 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, and 5 h after electrofusion. (omitted)

  • Since the first success of animal cloning, somatic cell nuclear transfer presented various ideas in many research areas such as regenerative medicine. However, SCNT embryos has poor survival rate. Therefore, numerous researches carried out to enhance the developmental capability of porcine nuclear transfer embryos. Cytochalasin B, demecolcine, latrunculin A, cycloheximide and 6-dimethylaminopurine are efficient chemicals treated in post-activation procedure to increase the efficiency of SCNT. This review study is aim to investigate the effects of these chemicals applied to post-activation in porcine SCNT. Cytochalasin B, demecolcine, latrunculin A are cytoskeletal manuplators inhibit extrusion of pseudo-polar body. Cytochalasin B and demecolcine showed considerably higher blastocyst formation proportion (26-28%) compared to when they are not treated (16%). And when latrunculin A was treated for postactivation, blastocyst formation proportion was increased in SCNT embryos exposed to LA (38%) than those in control (14%). On the other hand, cycloheximide and 6-dimethylaminopurine are protein synthesis and kinase inhibitors. And they help to maintain $Ca^{2+}$ fluctuation in oocytes. Cleavage and blastocyst rates of NT embryos were increased when they were exposed to CHX (16.9% and 5.4% with no CHX).And 6-DMAP also showed higher blastocyst formation (21.5% compared to 15.7%, control). Although all these chemicals have different mechanisms, they showed developmental competence enhancement in NT embryos. However, there are only few studies comparing each chemical's post-activation effect. Therefore, further research and study should be conducted to find optimal chemical for improving the efficiency of SCNT.
