Objects: This study examined the relations among college students' personality characteristics, drink motivation, and drinking behavior. This study also examined the mediating effect of drink motivation on the relationship between college students' personality characteristics and drinking behavior. Methods: The subjects of this study were 210 college students(male: 50, female: 160) attending a university in Chungnam. College students completed the personality characteristics, drink motivation, and drinking behavior scales. The data was analyzed by means of Pearson's correlation coefficients and regressions. Results: Results indicated that college students' neuroticism and extroversion were significantly related to drinking behavior. Also, college students' social motivation and coping motivation were significantly related to drinking behavior. Especially, social motivation fully mediated the relationship between college students' neuroticism and extroversion and drinking behavior. Coping motivation fully and partially mediated the relationship between college students' neuroticism and extroversion and drinking behavior. Conclusions: In this study, the personality characteristics directly influence the drinking behavior, but they found the influence on the drinking behavior through the drink motivation. In particular, it is very necessary to intervene in the development of health education programs that can intervene in drink motivation for college students with neurotic characteristics.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of alcohol drinking motivation on the drinking behaviors of female college students. It is necessary to examine the drinking behavior of female college students not only for their academic performance and health status but also for future reproduction concerns. The subjects of this study included 296 college students in their 20s. Research data was analyzed using SPSS 24.0 and AMOS 22 statistical programs. Results of this study found academic and human relationships had the greatest effect on the stress level of female college students. In addition, the perception of drinking was more influential on the drinking problem, and female college students who perceived anxiety through the drinking problem tried to change the behavior of drinking. Also, the perception of drinking by the influence of alcohol was more significant than that of drinking by college students who perceived anxiety through drinking problem. Second, if drinking is beneficial in the internal or external motivation of the individual, it maintains drinking behaviors and changes the behavior of drinking when experiencing the problem of drinking. Through these results, we aim to contribute to the reduction of the negative risk of alcohol by understanding the drinking preference of female college students and examining the drinking culture according to drinking motives.
Purpose: This study was done to identify the culture of college students in Jeju Province related to drinking alcohol and to analyze the relationship between drinking culture and social characteristics of the students. Methods: A questionnaire was distributed to 295 students at a college in Jeju province, students who met the criteria for the final analysis. Results: The results revealed that drinking most frequently began after graduation from high school (41.7%) and the reason for drinking was to get along with others (48.7%) and normal drinkers were common (69.6%). Gender, residence, experience of black outs and not to wishing to drink alcohol were significantly related to drinking characteristics. Satisfaction with college life, satisfaction with interpersonal relationships and stress level were not correlated with alcohol consumption. Conclusion: Educational and college authorities need to acknowledge colleges' responsibility in relation to their students' drinking behavior and to commit themselves to support an environment of responsible alcohol use.
This study was undertaken to investigate intake and consumption behavior of dairy products in college students in order to identify a better way to increase milk consumption. This survey was carried out through questionnaires. The subjects were 307 college students in ChungJu. A total of 98.3% students thought milk as good for health but only 21.5% of them drank it everyday. Most students reported drinking milk two to three times a week. Male students reported drinking milk for drinking, whereas females students for nutrition. College students preferred flavored milk rather than plain milk. Students preferred the drink-type yogurt among the dairy products. The major reason for drinking fermented milk was taste. After drinking the fermented milk, 39.1% of female students thought that fermented milk could prevent constipation. Most students thought that better taste and quality of milk and milk product would increase their consumption.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting the drinking behavior in high school students. Methods: There were 620 subjects who were first and second graders of seven high schools in Daegu. This study used Sinhaengwoo (1998)'s drinking behavior scale, Rowlison and Felner (1988)'s stress scale, Kovacs (1981)'s children's depression inventory, Rosenberg (1965)'s self-esteem scale. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression using SPSS/win 18.0 program. This study was approved by the Institutional Review Boards (IRB) of the Keimyung university hospital(No. 12-112). Results: The mean score for drinking behavior in high school students was 23.1points. Factors influencing drinking behavior in high school students were identified as self-esteem(t=-3.67, p<.001), stress(t=6.79, p<.001), school types(t=4.02, p<.001), sex(t=-3.67, p<.001). These factors explained 27% of drinking behavior reported by high school students. Conclusion: The results indicate which factors are majors influencing drinking behavior in high school students. Therefore, self-esteem enhancement could be considered as an effective strategy to reduce the drinking behavior in high school students.

Background: In this study, we aimed to investigate the drinking behaviors and drinking-related problems of college students in South Korea to produce national alcohol statistics. Methods: We carefully examined the questionnaires and previous research developed in the previous research project and selected questions that reflect the special environment and culture of college students. In order to stratify a nationally representative sample of college students, the distribution of students around the country were found through the educational statistics database of the Korea Educational Development Institute. Based on this information, we conducted a survey in collaboration with Gallup (Korea) to survey and analyze the drinking behaviors of 5,024 Korean students. Results: A nationwide cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2017, for Korean college students. A total of 5,024 students were recruited and analyzed. The monthly drinking rate was 78.0% for male students and 72.9% for female students. The high-risk drinking rate was 23.3% for male students and 17.2% for female students. The most popular category for number of drinks per drinking session was 'more than 10 glasses' per drinking session for both male (44.1%) and female (32.8%). On the alcohol use disorders identification test, the greatest proportion of male students were in the high-risk drinking category (score 8 to 15) 43.8%, followed by the 'low-risk drinking' (score 0 to 7) in 43.6%, 'alcohol abuse' (score 16 to 19) 7.2%, and 'alcohol dependence' (greater than 20) 5.4% categories, respectively. For female students, the greatest proportion of female students were in the 'low-risk drinking' in 49.6%, followed by 'high-risk drinking' 37.1%, 'alcohol abuse' 8.4%, and 'alcohol dependence' 4.9% categories, respectively. Conclusion: The results of the study showed that the drinking behavior of Korean college students was excessive. Overall, it was found that the college population has a greater high-risk drinking behaviors than general adult population. Furthermore, these problem drinking behaviors were prominent among female college students. Results from the present study suggest that it is necessary to monitor the drinking behavior of college students with constant interest and to prepare policies and strategies suitable for these circumstances.
This study was performed to investigate the health status and food habits of male college students in Wonju according to drinking behavior. A total of 204 (drinking group: 133, non-drinking group: 71) male college students were recruited and a questionnaire-based survey was conducted. General characteristics, drinking-related factors, health status, and food habits were investigated. Data were analyzed by SPSS program (ver 21.0). The type of residence (P<0.05) and obesity rate (P<0.05) were significantly different by drinking status. Frequency of drinking was 65.2%, and 39.9% of subjects started drinking upon entering college. The motivation to start drinking was 'from necessity'. Reason for drinking was 'Social relations'. The most frequent drinking opportunity in college was 'membership training'. The favorite kind of drink was beer. Health status factor scores for 'concerns about health (P<0.05)', and 'smoking (P<0.05)' were significantly higher in drinking group than those in non-drinking group. Food habits score (drinking group: 50.9 vs non-drinking group: 52.4, P<0.01) was significantly lower in the drinking group. Scores for 'I have breakfast regularly (P<0.05)', 'Do not eat the junk food often (P<0.05)', and 'Do not eat out often (P<0.05)' were significantly lower in the drinking group. 'Drink milk every day' was significantly higher in the drinking group.
This study was carried out to investigate alcohol consumption and dietary behavior of college students in the Chungbuk area. Alcohol consumption, dietary behavior, food preferences, food intake frequency and one-day dietary records were surveyed using questionnaires given to 387 college students. The mean heights and weights of subjects were $175.0{\pm}5.6cm\;and\;69.1{\pm}9.3kg$ in males, and $162.5{\pm}4.8cm\;and\;52.3{\pm}7.9kg$ in females. About 89% of subjects (male 90.6%, female 87.3%) consumed alcohol, and most of them had experienced their first drink due to peer pressure in high school. Usually the subjects were drinking with their friends 1-2 times/week and the amount of alcohol consumed was one or more bottles of Soju. More than 69% of the subjects had tried to quit drinking but more efficient campaigns promoting non-drinking behavior are still necessary since the recognition of the hazards of alcohol seemed not enough to convince college students to stop. The dietary behavior of college students was generally inadequate showing indifference to dietary balance, irregularity of meals, and skipping breakfast. It was more inadequate in the frequent drinking group. In the drinking group, while the food intake frequency scores for milk & dairy products, and fruits were significantly lower, the scores for fast food, frozen food and instant ramen were significantly higher. The mean DVS and DDS were found to be 12.61 and 3.93, respectively, and there was no significant difference shown by alcohol consumption. The dietary management of college student needs to be improved in many aspects. It is further troubled by alcohol consumption. Therefore, a nutrition education program including information on the hazards of alcohol and responsible drinking should be developed and provided.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of self-efficacy promoting reducing alcohol program on drinking related knowledge, drinking refusal self-efficacy, drinking outcome expectancy and problematic drinking behavior of women college students over 8 scores of AUDIT-K. Methods: Data were collected from 22 students with intervention program in the experimental group and 24 students with no intervention program in the control group and analyzed using ${\chi}^2$, t-test and ANCOVA. Results: The Drinking related knowledge(F=14.33, p<.001) of experimental group was significantly higher than that of control group and the optimistic drinking outcome expectancy(F=18.28, p<.001), and problematic drinking behavior(F=5.57, p=.003) of experimental group were significantly less than those of control group. Conclusion: it is recommended that college students should receive this program to prevent and reduce their drinking behaviors.
Alcohol has as much effect on our lives as the different taste for foods that people have all of the world. Recently, the interest about drinking habits has increased with the rise in health problems for college students with poor health related behavior. The purpose of this study was to evaluate alcohol consumption, smoking and eating behavior of college students in the Kyungsan area. This survey was administered through questionnaires, and the subjects were 177 male and 189 female college students. The self-administered questionnaire was composed of questions concerning social-demographic factors, general characteristics, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption and eating behavior. The data were analyzed by $\chi$$^2$-test and t-test. According to the survey results, almost of all of the survey subjects drank alcohol. The mean alcohol consumption level per day for male students (33.9${\pm}$29.7g) were significantly higher than for the female students (18.5${\pm}$16.5g), and more than 39.6% of the subjects drank alcohol 1-3 days a week. Alcohol consumption changed the students eating habits. Most students had dietary problems such as fast eating, skipping meal and spending too much money on fast food. The survey about eating behavior of the students showed the male students had more problems when compared with female students. Alcohol consumption levels and alcohol dependence showed a significant positive correlation with smoking cigarettes (r=0.386, p<0.001). The correlation coefficient between alcohol consumption and eating behavior was negatively correlated with skipping meals (r=-0.121, p<0.001). However, there were significant and positive correlations with overeating when students were depressed (r=0.130, p<0.05), with eating meals when watching TV or videos (r=0.085) and with spending money on fast food(r=0.235, p<0.235). The results indicate that health related behaviors of college students in the present study were fairly good. More attention should be given to college students and their habits of skipping meal, alcohol drinking and smoking, and the fairly good students can act as a model for correct dietary behavior so as to improve overall student health.
