Effect of Participation in Life Sports on Life Satisfaction of the Elderly (생활체육에 참여하는 노인의 삶의 만족도의 영향요인)

  • Purpose: This study examined the effects of physical fitness and aging anxiety on life satisfaction among the elderly. Methods: The participants were 119 elderly. Data collection was conducted from July 1 to 10, 2018. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression analysis with SPSS software. Results: The mean life satisfaction score was 4.10. Life satisfaction differed significantly according to several general characteristics: education level (p=.014), income (p<.001), living with partner (p=.041), perceived health status (p<.001), and number of chronic diseases (p<.001). Statistically significant positive relationships were observed between life satisfaction with muscle strength (r=.20) and, flexibility (r=.21), and a negative relationship was observed with aging anxiety (r=-.66). A total of 60.0% of life satisfaction was explained by income, perceived health status, muscle strength, flexibility, and aging anxiety. Conclusion: These results can be used to develop life sports programs to improve physical, social, and emotional health promotion with consideration for support to alleviate economic burden. Effect of life sports are evident as a way for healthy and energetic elderly. It should not be a simple exercise program but an integrated plan for improving physical, mental, and social health of the elderly.

Effect of Postural Education on Physical Satisfaction and Life Habit in Elementary Students

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of postural education in preventive educational aspects on physical satisfaction and life habit related to posture in elementary school students. Methods: Participants were 974 4th-grade elementary school students in 9 schools of U city (boy 50.2%, girl 49.8%). Postural education was conducted from May through November 2011, once each semester, each class was conducted two times. Results: Results of this study showed that physical satisfaction and life habit related to posture were significantly improved after postural education (p<0.05). Both physical satisfaction and life habit were not significantly difference between effort and non-effort group about good posture after education. Conclusion: This study showed that postural education was effective in improving the physical satisfaction and life habit of elementary school students.

The Effects of a Therapeutic Recreation Program on the Powerlessness and Life satisfaction in Chronic Mentally Disabled (치료레크리에이션이 정신요양시설에 있는 만성정신질환자의 무력감과 생활만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a therapeutic recreation program on the powerlessness and life satisfaction of people with chronic mental disability. Methods: Nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used for this study. There were 24 people in experimental group and 21 people in control group. Therapeutic Recreation Program was carried out twice a week in a total of 8 sessions, 60 minutes for each session. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, $X^2$-test, and independent t-test with SPSS/WIN 18.0. Results: Life satisfaction in the experimental group compared with the control group was significantly increased after the therapeutic recreation program (t=2.48, p=.017). On the other hand, There was no difference in powerlessness of experimental group compared with control group (t=1.51, p=.138). Conclusion: Further studies were needed to be done to support the effectiveness of recreation therapy on the powerlessness and life satisfaction of people with chronic mental disability. In addition, therapeutic recreation programs to improve helplessness and life satisfaction are in need.

An Exploratory Study of Factors Affecting Satisfaction of Medical School Life (의과대학생의 학교생활 만족도에 미치는 요인 탐색)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the factors that influence school life satisfaction based on personal variables, self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, and perception of the educational environment at a medical school in Korea. The data were collected from 228 medical students who agreed to participate in the study at a medical school. The Dundee Ready Medical Environment Measure (DREEM) and the self-esteem scale by Rosenberg were used. Questions measuring satisfaction of medical school life and interpersonal relationships (with professors, with senior/junior students, and with friends) were asked using a 5 point Likert scale. The data were analyzed by t-test, analysis of variance, and multiple regression analysis. The satisfaction of medical school life of male students was significantly higher than female students and increased with years of schooling. In DREEM, the students' perception of teachers decreased by school years. The relationship with senior and junior students of third year students was higher than other school years. The result of the regression analysis to determine the variables that affect satisfaction of medical school life showed that interpersonal relationships with senior and junior students, the students' social self-perception, and the students' perception of learning were significant. The results of this study will help medical schools in their plans to improve the level of satisfaction for the happiness and successful academic achievements of their students.

Influencing factors of and satisfaction with clinical practice between college and university dental hygiene students (학제에 따른 치위생과 학생의 임상실습 만족도와 관련 요인)

  • Objectives: This research aimed to identify the influential factors that affect the satisfaction of dental hygiene students' clinical training between college and university and contribute to improvement in clinical practice quality. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 210 dental clinical hygienists from June 10 to August 30, 2018. Data were analyzed using SPSS 22.0. An independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe's post-hoc test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient were employed, and a stepwise multiple regression analysis was performed. Results: Regarding the influential factors of satisfaction with clinical practice among dental hygiene students, in the case of college students, dental hygienist practice instructor dummy, self-efficacy, satisfaction of school life, interpersonal relation was the increasing order. In the case of university students, dental hygienist practice instructors, subjective health, satisfaction with school life, and interpersonal relations was the increasing order. Conclusions: The most influential factor of dental hygiene students' clinical practice satisfaction between college and university was the ability to form interpersonal relationships. Therefore, to increase the satisfaction of dental hygiene students with clinical practice between college and university, external sources and efforts to emphasize internal sources are required.

Types of Work-Life Satisfaction among Married Wage Workers: Focusing on Family-Friendly Leave Policies in the Workplace (기혼남녀근로자의 일-생활 만족유형화 연구: 직장내 휴가관련 가족친화제도를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this research was, first, to classify work-life satisfaction among married wage workers aged 20-59 years into several distinct types based on two dimensions of work and life, using data from the 20th(2017) wave of the Korean Labor & Income Panel Study. Second, the study aimed to assess the differences in socio-demographic characteristics (sex, age, educational level, average monthly income), and workplace-related variables (weekly working hours, full-time employment, job stability, business type, family-friendly leave policies) by work-life satisfaction type. Accordingly, four types of work-life satisfaction were identified: work-life satisfaction, work-life dissatisfaction, work satisfaction, and life satisfaction. There was a significant difference in the type of work-life satisfaction among married waged workers based on sex, age, educational level, and average monthly income. Additionally, there was a significant difference in the type of work-life satisfaction for all workplace-related variables, namely, weekly working hours, full-time employment, job stability, business type, and family-friendly leave policies. In particular, proportionally higher values of work-life satisfaction were evident among the workers in companies with family-friendly leave policies such as paid leave, menstrual leave, maternity leave, childcare leave, and family events leave, whereas there was a high rate of work-life dissatisfaction among the workers in companies without family-friendly leave policies.

The Relationship of Life Satisfaction, Health Behaviors and Successful Aging in the Elderly (지역사회 노인의 생활만족도, 건강행위와 성공적 노후간의 관계)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted in order to the relationship between life satisfaction, health behaviors, and successful aging and factors associated with successful aging. Methods: Participants in this study included 159 elders living in one city. Data on life satisfaction (Choi's Life Satisfaction Scale for Korean elderly, 1984), health behaviors (Choi & Kim's Health Behaviors Scale for Korean elderly, 1997), and successful aging (Kim & Shin's Successful Aging Scale for Korean elderly, 2005) were collected by trained interviewers. For analysis of collected data, the PASW 18.0 program was used, which included descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and Multiple regression. Results: Results showed a positive correlation between life satisfaction, health behaviors, and successful aging. Life satisfaction, self-perceived health status, and health behavior explained 60.8% of successful aging. Conclusion: There is a need to help improve health behavior and self-perceived health status of elders. We should also understand life satisfaction over their life span and establish a program that encourages healthy behavior in the community. Accordingly, these efforts will allow for achievement of a more successful aging process for the elderly.

A Study on Korean Retirees' Life Satisfaction with a Focus on Gender Differences (남녀 은퇴자의 은퇴전이 경험과 생활만족도에 관한 연구: 젠더차이를 중심으로)

  • This study examined the effects of individual, family, and career characteristics on retirees' life satisfaction and investigated the interactive effect of gender on the relations between retirement and life satisfaction. Data were drawn from 2 waves of Korean Retirement and Income Study (KReIS). The analytic sample included 158 retired men and 145 retired women in the second wave and all of whom had worked at the first wave. The results indicated that psychological and physical health conditions significantly affected retirees' life satisfaction. Also, family characteristics in terms of a spouse's work status and children's developmental stages, such as marriage and employment, influenced retirees' life satisfaction. Financial support from adult children living elsewhere also significantly affected retiree's life satisfaction. The interaction effect of gender was only found in effects of living arrangement (living alone/with a spouse vs. multiple generations living together) on retirees' life satisfaction.

Spiritual Well-Being, Social Support, Life Satisfaction and Depression in the Community Dwelling Elderly (지역사회 거주 노인의 영적안녕, 사회적 지지, 생활만족도 및 우울의 관계)

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study were to identify correlation of spiritual well-being, social support, life satisfaction and depression in the community dwelling elderly, and to explore a possibility to apply the spiritual well-being, and social support as resources to promote welfare of the elderly. Methods: A structured questionnaire was used to obtain data from a convenience sample of 222 senior citizens, who visited social welfare centers in Gangwon-do from September to October, 2010. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression. Results: There were significant differences in spiritual well-being based on religion, satisfaction to religion, economic status, physical health, and life satisfaction. Social support was significantly different according to economic status, physical health, life satisfaction, and social gathering. The existential well-being, family support, and special support had a significant effect on life satisfaction, and demonstrated positive correlations with the well-being of the elderly. Conclusion: Spiritual well-being and social support have significant effects on depression and life satisfaction of senior citizens. Thus spiritual well-being and social support can be considered as important factors that improve the elderly's quality of life.

Mediating effects of subjective health rates on the relationship between stress and life satisfaction of the persons with mental illness (정신장애인의 스트레스와 생활만족도와의 관계에서 주관적 건강수준의 매개효과)

  • Objectives: The main objectives of this research is to reveal the mediating effects of subjective health rates on the relationship between stress and life satisfaction of the persons with mental illness. Methods: This study used the data from 2011 Disabled survey by Ministry of health and welfare. The study subjects were 98,801 persons with mental illness. Mediating effects of subjective health rate was analyzed using regression analysis and sobel test. Results: The stress was negatively correlated with the subjective health rates and life satisfaction. And the subjective health rates was positively correlated with life satisfaction. Second, the subjective health rates worked as partial mediators on the relationship between stress and life satisfaction of the persons with mental illness. The implication and limitations of this study were discussed, and suggestions for further study were proposed. Conclusion: This study highlights that the mediating effects of subjective health rates on the relationship between stress and life satisfaction of the persons with mental illness. Health and welfare policy encouraging subjective health rates and reducing level of the stress to improve life satisfaction of the persons with mental illness should be considered.
