  • In this study, a series of geotechnical centrifugal tests were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of settlement control of two types of rigid pile structure embankments (PRSE) in collapsible loess under high-speed railway embankments. The research results show that ground reinforcement is required to reduce the post-construction settlement and settlement rate of the embankments. The rigid pile structure embankments using rigid piles can substantially reduce the embankment settlement in the construction of embankments on collapsible loess, and the efficiency in settlement reduction is affected by the pile spacing. The pile-raft structure embankments (PRSE) have much stronger ability in terms of the effectiveness of settlement control, while the pile-geogrid structure embankments (PGSE) provides rapid construction as well as economic benefits. Rational range of pile spacing of PRSE and PGSE are suggested based on the requirements of various railways design speeds. Furthermore, the time effectiveness of negative skin friction of piles and the action of pile-cap setting are also investigated. The relevant measures for improving the bearing capacity and two parts of transition zone forms as positive control mean have been suggested.

  • Saudi Arabia coastal area is highly valuable construction as a flat area covered by sabkha deposit. However, sabkha deposit has some geotechnical problems because of high groundwater level, high salt contents in groundwater, loose density, and possibility of collapsible settlement due to presence of crystals vulnerable to moisture, and ground improvement is needed to improve the bearing capacity. In this study, the characteristics of the sabkha soils in the coastal area of Saudi Arabia were analyzed and the applicability of dynamic compaction method was evaluated. Parametric study was conducted to analyze the behavior of sabkha deposit during dynamic compaction. The appropriateness of the proposed analytical solutions to estimate the depth of improvement was evaluated, and the troubles and notes in applying dynamic compaction in sabkha deposit were discussed.

  • The use of shield is increasing day by day, because it's method is advantageous tunneling method to soft and collapsible ground. In case of analyzing shield tunnel by FEM, short term behavior of ground by initial heaving and tail void closure and long terms of it because of consolidation by changes of pore pressures in clay must be considered. In this paper, the shield tunneling construction stages was analyzed from 2 dimensional elasto - viscoplastic finite element program used Mohr - Coulomb yield criterion but not considered the changes of pore pressures. The object of investigation was N - 2 Tunnel. Since the good results of analysis compared to the measured behavior of ground for heaving, tail void closure and liner installation, this results can be applied to design and construction of shield tunneling for the subways, sewage lines etc.

  • In this paper, the origin, development and features of a Korean folding stool are studied. A folding stool is a piece of collapsible seating furniture with its legs crossed in the form of the letter "X" and no back attached. In China, the folding stool was introduced from the West around the second century A.D. The folding stool of Korea was influenced by that of China. It is known from the records that the king used the folding stool from the Three Kingdom period. During the Koryo period, Chosun period and the modern period, the folding stool was used to show the authority of the king and nobleman. The folding stool was also used at outside places such as a hunting ground, a ceremonial walk, a battlefield, a garden etc. due to its portableness. Buddha worship policy of Koryo period supported the usage of the folding stool for shanding (禪定) by ascetics of Buddhist temple, or aristocrats. In a contemporary period, the folding stool is continuously produced and used as one kind of a folding chair due to its functionality, movability, storability and efficient space utilization. This research will serve as a momentum to investigate the origin and development of the East Asian seating furniture culture, and contribute to the further study and manufacturing of Korean seating furniture.

  • In this study, the rebar rock bolt sensor and GFRP rock bolt sensor, which can be monitored, were embedded in a large model slope, and the behavior of slopes occurred in the early stage of slope collapse was analyzed after performing the field failure test, numerical analysis of the individual element method and finite element method. By comparing and analyzing the field test and numerical analysis results, field applicability of rock slope collapse monitoring on the rebar rock bolt sensor and GFRP rock bolt sensor was investigated. Through this study, smart slope collapse prediction and warning system was developed, which can be used to induce effective evacuation of residents living in the collapsible area by detecting landslide and ground decay precursor information in advance.

  • A folding solar power system is a stand-alone system and is a structure with solar panels attached. It consists of supporting parts and folding parts for ease of movement. While the efficiency of solar panels is also important to produce electricity by maximizing the power efficiency of solar panels, the most important thing is structure stability. The folding solar power structure intended to be developed in this study is a collapsible structure that is easy to move and install into systems that can produce electricity from grid to independent. Since these structures are installed outdoors, wind loads, snow cover, etc. In this paper, the wind loads most affected by the folding solar power generation structure were obtained using the MeshFree Finite Element Method. MeshFree is a program that makes it easier for users to interpret by simplifying the mesh tasks required by an existing analysis. The analysis showed that the greater the angle of inclination of the wind to the ground, the greater the wind load. In addition, reliability was ensured by wind load testing.
