One of the most important issues in structural systems is evaluation of the margin of safety in low and mid-rise buildings against the progressive collapse mechanism due to the earthquake loads. In this paper, modeling of collapse propagation in structural elements of RC frame buildings is evaluated by tracing down the collapse points in beam and column structural elements, one after another, under earthquake loads and the influence of column removal is investigated on how the collapse expansion in beam and column structural members. For this reason, progressive collapse phenomenon is studied in 3-story and 5-story intermediate moment resisting frame buildings due to the corner and edge column removal in presence of the earthquake loads. In this way, distribution and propagation of the collapse in progressive collapse mechanism is studied, from the first element of the structure to the collapse of a large part of the building with investigating and comparing the results of nonlinear time history analyses (NLTHA) in presence of two-component accelograms proposed by FEMA_P695. Evaluation of the results, including the statistical survey of the number and sequence of the collapsed points in process of the collapse distribution in structural system, show that the progressive collapse distribution are special and similar in low-rise and mid-rise RC buildings due to the simultaneous effects of the column removal and the earthquake loads and various patterns of the progressive collapse distribution are proposed and presented to predict the collapse propagation in structural elements of similar buildings. So, the results of collapse distribution patterns and comparing the values of collapse can be utilized to provide practical methods in codes and guidelines to enhance the structural resistance against the progressive collapse mechanism and eventually, the value of damage can be controlled and minimized in similar buildings.
In this paper the bending collapse characteristics of 6XXX series aluminum rectangular tubes were studied with a pure bending collapse test rig which could apply the pure bending moment without imposing additional shear and tensile forces. Under the pure bending moment, there occured three kinds of bending collapse modes-local buckling delayed buckling and tensile failure-depending on the a, b, t (depth width thickness) and material properties. Experimental results are compared with the results of finite element method and other methods.

The progressive collapse potential of steel moment framed structures due to abrupt removal of a column is investigated based on the energy principle. Based on the changes of component's internal energy, this paper analyzes structural member's sensitivity to abrupt removal of a column to determine a sub-structure resisting progressive collapse. An energy-based structural damage index is defined to judge whether progressive collapse occurs in a structure. Then, a simplified beam damage model is proposed to analyze the energies absorbed and dissipated by structural beams at large deflections, and a simplified modified plastic hinges model is developed to consider catenary action in beams. In addition, the correlation between bending moment and axial force in a beam during the whole deformation development process is analyzed and modified, which shows good agreement with the experimental results.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of bend angle on the collapse behavior of locally wall thinned pipe bends. For this purpose, the present study performed three-dimensional finite element analysis on the 30-, 60-, and 90-degree pipe bends with local wall thinning at the center of intrados, extrados, and crown, and evaluated the collapse moment for different thinning dimensions under closing- and opening-mode bending with a constant internal pressure. The results showed that, for intrados and extrados wall thinning, the reduction in the collapse moment due to local wall thinning became significant with decreasing bend angle of pipe bends. This effect of bend angle was enhanced with increasing thinning dimensions, and it was clearer fur opening-mode bending than for closing-mode bending. For crown wall thinning, however, the effect of bend angle was unclear and was less sensitive to the change of wall thinning shapes.
Reinforced concrete (RC) moment frames supported on two ground levels have been widely constructed in mountainous areas with medium to high seismicity in China. In order to investigate the seismic collapse behavior and risk, a scaled frame model was tested under constant axial load and reversed cyclic lateral load. Test results show that the failure can be induced by the development of story yielding at the first story above the upper ground. The strong column and weak beam mechanism can be well realized at stories below the upper ground. Numerical analysis model was developed and calibrated with the test results. Three pairs of six case study buildings considering various structural configurations were designed and analyzed, showing similar dynamic characteristics between frames on two ground levels and flat ground of each pair. Incremental dynamic analyses (IDA) were then conducted to obtain the seismic collapse fragility curves and collapse margin ratios of nine analysis cases designated based on the case study buildings, considering amplification of earthquake effect and strengthening measures. Analysis results indicate that the seismic collapse safety is mainly determined by the stories above the upper ground. The most probable collapse mechanism may be induced by the story yielding of the bottom story on the upper ground level. The use of tie beam and column strengthening can effectively enhance the seismic collapse safety of frames on two ground levels.
This study performed finite element analysis on the pipe bend with various bend angles under loading conditions of internal pressure and combined pressure and bending, to investigate the effect of bend angle on the collapse behavior of pipe bend and on the stress state in the bend region. In the analysis, the pipe bends with bend angle of $5\~90^{\circ}$ were considered, and the bending moment was applied as in-plane closing and opening modes. From the results of analysis, it was found that the collapse moment of pipe bend increases with decreasing bend angle. As the bend angle decreases, also, the equivalent stress at intrados region increases regardless of bending mode. Under closing mode bending especially, the increase in stress at intrados is significant so that the maximum stress region moves from crown to intrados with decreasing bend angle.
For evaluation of building performance, a nonlinear dynamic capacity of the building is a key parameter. In this study, an reinforced concrete special moment resisting frame building was chosen to study the process of determining the nonlinear dynamic capacity. The building, which was designed by IBC 2003 representing new codes, was composed of special moment resisting frames in the perimeter and internal frames inside the building. The capacity, which is inter-story drift capacity, consists of two categories, local and global collapses. Global collapse capacity was determined by incremental dynamic analysis. Local collapse capacity was determined by the same method except for utilizing damage index. In audition to this, it was also investigated that the effect of including internal frames designed by gravity load in the analysis. Results showed that the damage index is a useful tool for determining local collapse. Furthermore, including the internal frames with special frames in the analysis is very important in determining the capacity of a building so both must be considered at the same time.
Predictive demand and collapse fragility functions are two essential components of the probabilistic seismic demand analysis that are commonly developed based on statistics with enormous, costly and time consuming data gathering. Although this approach might be justified for research purposes, it is not appealing for practical applications because of its computational cost. Thus, in this paper, Bayesian regression-based demand and collapse models are proposed to eliminate the need of time-consuming analyses. The demand model developed in the form of linear equation predicts overall maximum inter-story drift of the lowto mid-rise regular steel moment resisting frames (SMRFs), while the collapse model mathematically expressed by lognormal cumulative distribution function provides collapse occurrence probability for a given spectral acceleration at the fundamental period of the structure. Next, as an application, the proposed demand and collapse functions are implemented in a seismic fragility analysis to develop fragility and consequently seismic demand curves of three example buildings. The accuracy provided by utilization of the proposed models, with considering computation reduction, are compared with those directly obtained from Incremental Dynamic analysis, which is a computer-intensive procedure.
In this paper the bending collapse characteristics of square and rectangular steel tubes were studied with the pure bending test machine which apply pure bending moment without imposing shear and tensile forces. Under pure bending moment, delayed buckling modes occur and depend on test length and shape of section. For delayed mode, the endrgy of bending moment is absorbed by strain hardening energy. The pre- dictions of maximum moment and moment-rotation angle curve from those concepts are in good agreement with experimental observations.
