Plastic buckling of tubular columns has been attributed to rotational instability of plastic hinges. The present study aimed to characterize the plastic hinges for two different grades of strain-hardening, examined in mild-steel (MS) and stainless-teel (SS) tubes with un-strengthened and strengthened conditions. At the primary stage, the formerly tested experimental specimens were simulated using full-scale FE models considering nonlinear response of the materials, then to estimate the characteristics of the plastic hinges, a meso model was developed from the critical region of the tubes and the moment-rotation diagrams were depicted under pure bending conditions. By comparison of the relative rotation diagram obtained by the full-scale models with the critical rotation under pure bending, the length and critical rotation of the plastic hinges under eccentric axial load were estimated. The stress and displacement diagrams indicated the mechanism of higher energy absorption in the strengthened tubes, compared to unstrengthened specimens, due to establishment of stable wrinkles along the tubes. The meso model showed that by increasing the critical rotation in the strengthened MS tube equal to 1450%, the energy absorption of the tube has been enhanced to 2100%, prior to collapse.

In this study, we investigated the behavior characteristics of the L-type flange bolt connection, which is used to connect upper and lower flanges having L-type ring sections, by bolts. This connection is mainly used in domestic wind turbine structures, wherein it is a vital component as any imperfection could cause the collapse of the entire structural system. Therefore, understanding the behavior characteristics of the L-type flange bolt connection is imperative. In this study, the connection's response to external force was simulated using finite element (FE) analysis and the FE model was idealized to behave as a single L-type bolt flange. The variation in the bolt tension and the L-type flange stress were analyzed to understand the behavior characteristics of the connection. Moreover, the bolt-load function models proposed by Petersen, Schmidt/Neuper and VDI 2230, theoretically expressing a relation between bolt tension and external force, were compared to evaluate the suitability of the FE analysis and analyze the significant behavior characteristics of the connection. Furthermore, the changes in the bolt-load curve due to the variations in the partial dimensions of the L-type flange bolt connection were analyzed.

In recent years, many construction projects become large and complicated, and construction accidents also steadily increase, which grows interest in the safety and maintenance during construction. Many of the construction accidents are related to temporary construction and structures, but the safety evaluation and management during construction are unclear and indefinite due to the short operating period and continuous change in the formation of the temporary structure. The system support, which is one of the temporary structures to support the pouring load of concrete, was proposed to easily install and dismantle members with connection parts pre-manufactured. The use of the system support is increasing to improve the safety of the temporary structure during construction. However, the system support, which consists of multiple members, still has uncertainties in connectivity between members and supports of vertical members. Therefore, this study analyzed the structure, load, and accident cases of the system support to define the damage scenarios for member connection, support condition, and lateral displacement. The decrease rate of the critical load was analyzed according to the damage scenarios based on the defined unit structure of the system support. In addition, this study provided vulnerable members for each damage scenario, which could induce instability of the temporary structures during design, construction, and operation of the structure.
Analyzing the collapse behavior of thin-walled steel structures holds significant importance in ensuring their safety and longevity. Geometric imperfections present on the surface of metal materials can diminish both the durability and mechanical integrity of steel shells. These imperfections, encompassing local geometric irregularities and deformations such as holes, cavities, notches, and cracks localized in specific regions of the shell surface, play a pivotal role in the assessment. They can induce stress concentration within the structure, thereby influencing its susceptibility to buckling. The intricate relationship between the buckling behavior of these structures and such imperfections is multifaceted, contingent upon a variety of factors. The buckling analysis of thin-walled steel shell structures, similar to other steel structures, commonly involves the determination of crucial material properties, including elastic modulus, shear modulus, tensile strength, and fracture toughness. An established method involves the emulation of distributed geometric imperfections, utilizing real test specimen data as a basis. This approach allows for the accurate representation and assessment of the diversity and distribution of imperfections encountered in real-world scenarios. Utilizing defect data obtained from actual test samples enhances the model's realism and applicability. The sizes and configurations of these defects are employed as inputs in the modeling process, aiding in the prediction of structural behavior. It's worth noting that there is a dearth of experimental studies addressing the influence of geometric defects on the buckling behavior of cylindrical steel shells. In this particular study, samples featuring geometric imperfections were subjected to experimental buckling tests. These same samples were also modeled using Finite Element Analysis (FEM), with results corroborating the experimental findings. Furthermore, the initial geometrical imperfections were measured using digital image correlation (DIC) techniques. In this way, the response of the test specimens can be estimated accurately by applying the initial imperfections to FE models. After validation of the test results with FEA, a numerical parametric study was conducted to develop more generalized design recommendations for the stainless-steel shell structures with the initial geometric imperfection. While the load-carrying capacity of samples with perfect surfaces was up to 140 kN, the load-carrying capacity of samples with 4 mm defects was around 130 kN. Likewise, while the load carrying capacity of samples with 10 mm defects was around 125 kN, the load carrying capacity of samples with 14 mm defects was measured around 120 kN.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the mechanical stress and displacement on the jaws during the simulated bilateral clenching task on the three-dimensional finite element model of the dentated skull with unilateral molar loss. For this study, the computed tomography(G.E.8800 Quick, USA) was used to scan the total length of human skull in the frontal plane at 2.0mm intervals. The fully assembled finite element model consists of the articular disc, maxilla, mandible, teeth, periodontal ligament and cranium. The FE model was used to simulate the bilateral clenching in intercuspal position. The loading condition was the force of the masseter muscle exerted on the mandible as reported by Korioth et al. degrees of freedom of the zygomatic region where the masseter muscle is attached were fixed as restraints. In order to reflect the actual action of the muscles force, the displacement of the region was attached where the muscle is connected to the temporal bone and restraint conditions were given values identical to values at the attachment region of the masticatory muscle but with the opposite direction of the reaction from when the muscle force is acted on the mandible. Although the mandible generally has higher displacement and von Mises stress than the maxilla, its mandibular corpus on the molar-loss side has a higher stress and displacement than the molar-presence side. Because the displacement and von Mises Stress was the highest on the lateral surface of mandibular corpus with molar loss, the stress level of the condyle on the molar-loss side is greater than that of the molar-presence side, which in turn caused the symphysis of the mandible to bend. In conclusion, the unilateral posterior bite collapse with molar loss under para-functional activities such as bruxism and clenching can affect the stress concentration on the condyle and mandibular corpus. It is therefore necessary to consider the biomechanical function of dento-skeleton under masticatory force while designing the occlusal scheme of restoration on alveolar bone with the posterior collapse.

Operative procedures such as core drilling with and without fibular bone grafting have been recognized as the treatment methods for osteonecrosis of femoral head(ONFH) by delaying or preventing the collapse of the femoral head. In addition, core drilling with cementation using polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) has been proposed recently as another surgical method. However, no definite treatment modality has been found yet while operative procedures remain controversial to many clinicians In this study, a finite element method(FEM) was employed to analyze and compare various surgical procedures of ONFH to provide a biomechanical insight. This study was based upon biomechanical findings which suggest stress concentration within the femoral head may facilitate the progression of the necrosis and eventual collapse. For this purpose, five anatomically relevant hip models were constructed in three dimensions : they were (1) intact(Type I), (2) necrotic(Type II), (3) core drilled only(Type III), (4) core drilled with fibular bone graft(Type IV), and (5) core drilled with cementation(Type V). Physiologically relevant loading were simulated. Resulting stresses were calculated. Our results showed that the volumetric percentage subjected to high stress in the necrotic cancellous region was greatest in the core drilled only model(Type III), followed by the necrotic(Type II), the bone graft (Type IV), and the cemented(Type V) models. Von Mises stresses at the tip of the graft(Type IV) was found to be twice more than those of cemented core(Type V) indicating the likelihood of the implant failure. In addition, stresses within the cemented core(Type V) were more evenly distributed and relatively lower than within the fibular bone graft(Type IV). In conclusion, our biomechanical analyses have demonstrated that the bone graft method(Type IV) and the cementation method(Type V) are both superior to the core decompression method(Type III) by reducing the high stress regions within the necrotic cancellous bone. Also it was found that the core region filled with PMMA(Type V) provides far smoother transfer of physiological load without causing the concentration of malignant stresses which may lead to the failure than with the fibular bone graft(Type IV). Therefore, considering the above results along with the degree of difficulties and risk of infection involved with preparation of the fibular bone graft, the cementation method appears to be a promising surgical treatment for the early stage of osteonecrosis of the femoral head.

In this study, the precise shapes of sunken ships and information on seafloor topography were analyzed using data obtained from a multi-beam echo sounder. The state of each sunken ship was analyzed by processing diverse imagery data which was compared with data obtained from past investigations to determine changes in the state and circumjacent seafloor topography. Apparent changes in the seafloor topography around one sunken ship, the "Pacific Friend", were found from stern to bow as a result of continued submarine erosion and sedimentation. In the case of sunken ship "No. 7 Haeseong", the partial collapse of the bow was revealed in the seabed images captured in 2015, though it had still been intact in images captured during the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency's investigation in 2011. This partial collapse was presumed to have resulted from the effects of continued tidal currents, the cargo load of the ship and continued corrosion of the ship over a long time on the seabed. Continuous monitoring of residual fuel inside the ship is necessary to avoid leakage and potential marine pollution. By conducting image analysis on these sunken ships, it has been determined that the structural safety of the ships is seriously influenced by tidal currents and seafloor topography, while the hulls will be continuously changed by corrosion. As a result, it can be concluded that the development of prediction and response techniques that take into consideration residual fuel leakage and environmental changes according to the geological characteristics of sunken ships is necessary.

Ship and bridge structures are a type of long box-shaped structure, and resistance to vertical bending moment is a key factor in their structural design. In particular, because box girders are repeatedly exposed to irregular wave loads for a long time, the continuous collapse behavior of structural members must be accurately predicted. In this study, plastic collapse behavior, including buckling according to load changes of the box girder receiving pure bending moments, was analyzed using a numerical analysis method. The analysis targets were selected as three box girders used in the Gordo experiment. The cause of the difference was considered by comparing the results of the structural strength experiment with those of non-linear finite element analysis. This study proposed a combination of the entire and local sagging shape to reflect the effect of the initial sagging caused by welding heat that is inevitably used to manufacture carbon steel materials. The procedures reviewed in the study and the contents of the initial sagging configuration can be used as a good guide for analyzing the final strength of similar structures in the future.

In this study ship collision risk analysis is performed to determine the design vessel for collision impact analysis of suspension bridge. Method II in AASHTO LRFD bridge design specifications which is a more complicated probability based analysis procedure is used to select the design vessel for collision impact. From the assessment of ship collision risk for each bridge pier exposed to ship collision, the design impact lateral strength of bridge pier is determined. The analysis procedure is an iterative process in which a trial impact resistance is selected for a bridge component and a computed annual frequency of collapse(AF) is compared to the acceptance criterion, and revisions to the analysis variables are made as necessary to achieve compliance. The acceptance criterion is allocated to each pier using allocation weights based on the previous predictions. This AF allocation method is compared to the pylon concentration allocation method to obtain safety and economy in results. This method seems to be more reasonable than the pylon concentration allocation method because AF allocation by weights takes the design parameter characteristics quantitatively into consideration although the pylon concentration allocation method brings more economical results when the overestimated design collision strength of piers compared to the strength of pylon is moderately modified. The design vessel for each pier corresponding with the design impact lateral strength obtained from the ship collision risk assessment is then selected. The design impact lateral strength can vary greatly among the components of the same bridge, depending upon the waterway geometry, available water depth, bridge geometry, and vessel traffic characteristics. Therefore more researches on the allocation model of AF and the selection of design vessel are required.

Masonry structures are used as bearing walls in small buildings, but they are generally considered non-bearing walls. They are used as partition walls that divide the interior spaces of the frame structures of buildings. In addition, wetting techniques that use mortar as an adhesive between blocks or bricks in construction are vulnerable to climatic conditions, especially cracks in mortar, which can cause conduction collapse of the walls in seismic loading. The purpose of this research was to propose a dry concrete block construction method that complements the weak axial shear stiffness and improves the weakness of the wet construction method as well as to investigate its structural behavior. In this study, the material properties of concrete blocks were examined, and the seismic performance of the proposed dry assembly structure was verified by structural behavior tests on horizontal cyclic loads. First, in these study results, concrete blocks can be applied to the dry block construction method instead of wet construction methods because they secure more than C-type blocks in KS regulations. Second, the structural performance of the wall against a horizontal cyclic load indicates that the resisting force of the assembly block wall is increased by increasing the horizontal length of the wall, forming several diagonal cracks. Finally, the proposed dry block wall structure requires a seismic performance assessment considering that the ratio of the shape of the wall by height and length is considered a major influence variable on the structural behavior under a horizontal load.
