  • The fabrication process and mechanical properties of SiC particle prefrrms with high volume fraction ranged 50∼71% were investigated to make metal matrix composites for possible applications as heat sinks in electronic packares. The SiC particle preforms with 50∼71vol% of reinforcement were fabricated by a new modified process named ball milling and pressing method. The SiC particle performs were fabricated by ball milling of SiC particles with single sized of 48${\mu}$m in diameter or two different size of 8${\mu}$m and 48${\mu}$min diameter, with collodal SiO2 as inorgnic binder in distilled water, and the mixed slurries were cold pressed for consolidation into final prefom. The compressive strengths og calcined SiC particle prefoms increased from 20MPa to 155MPa with increasing the content of inorganis binder, temperature and time for calcination. The increase of compressive strength of SiC particle bridge the interfaces of two neighboring SiC particles.

  • A process has been successfully used to manufacture 6061/Graphite composite material and the Graphite particles are distributed uniformly within the Al alloy matrix. The 6061 powders was mixed with natural Graphite particles in a ball milling blender and cold compacted specimens were extruded into rods 15mm in diameter at 450$^{\circ}C$. The results showed that tensile properties of the composites with Graphite content have been reduced. The emergence of fine microstructures appeared to be related to the graphite volume. Heat-treated composites were found to possess good mechanical properties as compared with those of non heated composites. A model was used that the tensile strength of the composites would be estimated from the theoretical calculation and experimental data.

  • A LCD backlight inverter control IC based on the piezoelectric transformer (PZT) for Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL) lighting is proposed. It is indeed a variable frequency, variable duty (VFVD) controller having dual feedback control loops for achieving both the regulation of lamp current and the maximum efficiency. The PWM controller regulates the lamp current, while the PLL controller tunes the operating frequency to the frequency that the efficiency of the combined LC-PZT resonator becomes maximum. The mixed PLL/PWM control technique lets the backlight inverter operate at the maximum efficiency in spite of the variation of component and environment. The controller features include a protection for an open or broken lamps, and an open lamp regulation.

  • When asymmetric thermal-hydraulic conditions occur between cold legs, the core inlet temperature will be nonuniform if the coolant is not mixed perfectly in the lower plenum. These uneven core inlet conditions may induce the change in core power distribution. Thus realistic prediction of thermal mixing is important in such abnormal conditions. In this study, reactor internals, which are scaled down as to conserve the flow area ratio, are set up in the model of KORI Unit 1 with the scaling factor of 1/710 by volume and coolant temperatures are measured beneath the lower core plate. Based on experimental results, the ability of COMMIX-1B code to simulate the coolant mixing phenomena in the lower plenum is estimated. The results show that complete mixing never occurs in any conditions and the mixing pattern is characterized according to the plant type.

  • The mixed atomized iron powders with 0.3% graphite and 1% Ni powders were cold pressed and sintered at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 30 min under pure Ar gas atmosphere. Some of the sintered specimens were intercritically annealed at $760^{\circ}C$ and quenched in water (single quenching). The other sintered specimens were first fully austenized at $890^{\circ}C$ and water quenched. These specimens were then intercritically annealed at $760^{\circ}C$ and re-quenched in water. The experimental results showed that the wear coefficient effectively decreased in the double quenched specimen.

  • The development of Fe-based metal matrix composites (MMCs) with high content of hard phase has been approached by combining the use of advanced powder metallurgy techniques like high-energy milling (HEM), cold isostatic pressing (CIP) and vacuum sinterings. A 30% vol. of NbC particles was mixed with Fe powder by HEM in a planetary mill during 10h, characteristing the powder by the observation of morphology and microstructure by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). After of sintering process the variation of density, hardness, carbon content and the microstructural changes observed, permits to find the optimal conditions of processing. Afterwards, a heat treatment study was performed to study the hardenability of the composite.

  • Existing oceanographic data indicate that tidal mixing fronts generally prevail in the Eastern Yellow Sea along the Korean coast. In the Western part, these fronts seem to be much weaker. These fronts are believed to be generated mostly by spatially different tidal mixing. The geostrophic adjustment model applied to the observed density structure gives the mixed coastal water flowing northward and the offshore waters(both surface warm and bottom cold waters) flowing southward along the Korean coast. The transport of each water amounts to O(10$\^$4/)m$\^$3//sec.

  • This paper examined the MHD and thermal behavior of unsteady mixed convection flow of a rotating fluid in a porous parallel plate channel in the presence of Hall current and heat source. The exact solutions of the concentration, energy and momentum equations are obtained. The influence of each governing parameter on non dimensional velocity, temperature, concentration, skin friction coefficient, rate of heat transfer and rate of mass transfer at the porous parallel plate channel surfaces is discussed. During the course of numerical computation, it is observed that as Hall current parameter and Soret number at the porous channel surfaces increases, the primary and secondary velocity profiles are increases while the primary and secondary skin friction coefficients are increases at the cold wall and decreases at the heated wall. In particular, it is noticed that a reverse trend in case of heat source parameter.

  • With the rapid urbanization and growing energy use intensity in the built environment, the glazed curtainwall has become ever more important in the architectural practice and environmental stewardship. Besides its energy efficiency roles, window has been an important transparent component for daylight penetration and a view-out for occupant satisfaction. In response to the climate crisis caused by the built environment, this research focuses on the study of net-zero energy retrofitting by using a new building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) curtainwall as a sustainable alternative to conventional window systems. Design variables such as building orientations, climate zones, energy attributes of BIPV curtainwalls, and glazed area were studied, to minimize energy consumption and discomfort hours for three cities representing hot (Miami, FL), mixed (Charlotte, NC), and cold (Minneapolis, MN). Parametric analysis and Pareto solutions are presented to provide a comprehensive explanation of the correlation between design variables and performance objectives for net-zero energy retrofitting applications.

  • Due to the environmental issue vast research is going on to replace the widely used lead contented piezoelectric materials. Bismuth sodium titanate (abbreviated as BNT) based bismuth sodium titanate-barium titanate (abbreviated as BNBT) ceramic was prepared by using modified method rather than conventional mixed oxide method. This modification was made to improve the properties of BNT based ceramic. In this procedure $BaTiO_3$ (abbreviated as BT) was prepared using conventional mixed oxide method. Analytical grade raw materials of $BaCO_3$ and $TiO_2$ were weighted and ball milled using ethanol medium. The mixed slurry was dried and sieved under 80 mesh. Then the powder was calcined at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. This calcined BT powder was used in the preparation of BNBT. Stoichiometric amount of $Bi_2O_3$, $Na_2CO_3$, $TiO_2$ and BT were weighted and mixed by using ball mill. The used calcination temperature was $850^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. Calcined powder was taken for another milling step. BNBT disks were pressed to 15 mm of diameter and then cold isostatical press (CIP) was used. Pressed samples were sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. The SEM microstructure analysis revealed that the grain shape of the sintered ceramic was polyhedral and grain boundary was well matched where as the sample prepared by conventional method showed irregular arrangement and grain boundary not well matched. And sintered density was better (5.78 g/cc) for the modified method. It was strongly observed that the properties of BNBT ceramic near MPB composition was found to be improved by the modified method compare to the conventional mixed oxide method. The piezoelectric constant dB of 177.33 pC/N, electromechanical coupling factor $k_p$ of 33.4%, dielectric constant $K_{33}^T$ of 688.237 and mechanical quality factor $Q_m$ of 109.37 was found.
