If the flow of booster gas which is exhausted to the rear part of a canister is properly restricted in the canister of a hot-launch system, the resultant pressure built up in the canister provides additional force to accelerate the missile to a required launch velocity. These thrust augmentation performances can be controlled through the configuration design of baseplate orifices. In this paper, the simple technique to analyze the thrust augmentation performances of baseplate orifices is suggested and the thrust augmentation characteristics by its various configurations are compared. According to the initial displacement of a missile, the inner pressure of a canister is measured from scaled cold flow tests, and the discharge coefficient of baseplate orifices is calculated. Then the thrust augmentation in a canister is simulated by applying these discharge characteristics to the AMESIM software for launch dynamics.

The control model in the tandem cold rolling mill consists of many mathematical theories and is used to calculate the reference values such as the roll gap and the rolling speed for good operation of rolling mill. But, the control model used presently has a problem causing inaccurate prediction of the rolling force. By the parameter identification, it was found that the main factor causing inaccurate prediction of the rolling force was incorrect modeling of the friction coefficient and the flow stress. To get rid of the erroneous factor new adaptive schemes are suggested in this work. Those are a long-time adaptation by the iterative least-square method and a short-time adaptation by the recursive weighted least-square method respectively. The new equations for the friction coefficient and the flow stress are derived by applying the suggested adaptive algorithms. Through the on-line test in an actual mill, it is proved that the rolling force predicted by the new equations is more accurate than the one by the existing equations ever used.

With the increasing reliability of analysis schemes and the dramatically increased calculating speed, the computer simulation has become and indispensable process to predict the interruption capacity of circuit breakers. Generally, circuit breakers have to possess both the small current and large current interruption abilities and the circuit breaker designers need to evaluate its capacities to save the time and the expense. The analysis of small current and the large current interruption performances have been considered separately because the phenomena occurring in a interrupter are quite different. To analyze the dielectric recovery after large current interruption many physical phenomena such as heat transfer, convection and arc radiation, the nozzle ablation, the ionization of high temperature SF(sub)6 gas, the electric and themagnetic forces and so forth mush be considered. However, in the analysis of small current interruption performance only the cold gas flow analysis needs to be carried out because the capacitive current is to small that the influence from the current can be neglected. In this paper, an empirical equation which is obtained from a series of tests to estimate the dielectric recovery strength has been applied to a real circuit breaker. The results of analysis have been compared with the test results and the reliability has been investigated.
In this study, we compare thermal performance between four different types of cold plates for humanoid robot cooling. Two commercially available cold plates made of copper have different dimensions and internal flow paths: One has $20{\times}20$$mm^2$ base area with micro-channels and the other has $62.5{\times}62.5$$mm^2$ base area with 85 round pin-fins. And two different types of cold plates of $20{\times}20$$mm^2$ base area with 7 mm high are made of PC (polycarbonate), which aims to reduce the weight of cooling system. All cold plates are mounted on a $20{\times}20$$mm^2$ copper block with two cartridge heaters of 30 $W/cm^2$. The overall heat transfer coefficient and thermal resistances for the liquid-cooled cold plates are obtained. The copper cold plate with micro-channels showed the best performance. Polycarbonate cold plates display fairly good thermal performance with more reduced system weight.

Experiments were carried out to evaluate performance of the cold air distribution systems with an ice storage tank in test room. Cold air distribution systems provide primary air for comfort conditioning or process cooling at coil discharge temperatures$4^{\circ}C$ to$11^{\circ}C$. The application of a cold air distribution system allows for the downsizing of air distribution equipment and central plant equipment when ice storage tank is used. The benefit of a cold air distribution system include a decrease in the floor-to-floor height, increase floor space, reduced building capital costs, reduced energy use and demand. The use of cold air distribution can result in the most cost effective system and is currently being implemented world wise as the new standard in air conditioning systems. In this study, the cold air distribution system is compared with the general ice storage system. Under the same cooling load conditions, experimental results show that the supply air volume of cold air distribution system decrease 38%, and decrease 45% flow rate of brine for the general ice storage system.

Unsteady thermally stratified flow caused by two-dimensional surface discharge of warm water into a oblong channel was investigated. Experimental study was focused on the rapidly developing thermal diffusion at small Richardson number. The basic objective were to study the interfacial mixing between a flowing layer of warm water and an underlying body of cold water and to accumulate experimental data to test computational turbulence models. Mean velocity field measurements were carried out by using NMR-CT (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance-Computerized Tomography). It detects quantitative flow image of any desired section in any direction of flow in short time. Results show that at small Richardson number warm layer rapidly penetrates into the cold layer because of strong turbulent mixing and instability between the two layers. It is found that the transfer ofheat across the interface is more vigorous than that of momentum. It is also proved that the NMR-CT technique is a very valuable tool to measure unsteady three dimensional flow field.

Dual pulse rocket motor is a variant of solid rocket motor with two propellant grain separated by a pulse separation device. The major performance of such a rocket motor is influenced by the change in the hole area of pulse separation device to nozzle throat area ratio. In this study, we performed flow analysis to investigate the internal flow characteristics according to the pulse separation device hole area to nozzle throat area ratio change. Gases used flow analysis were used combustion gas of HTPB/AP composite propellant and nitrogen gas. Flow analysis results of the dual pulse rocket motor were validated by comparison with experimental results of pneumatics. Commercial CFD code ANSYS FLUENT 14.5 is used in this study to simulate flow analysis.

When emergency core cooling system (ECCS) is operated during loss of coolant accident (LOCA) in a pressurized water reactor (PWR), pressurized thermal shock (PTS) phenomenon can occur as cooling water is injected into a cold leg, mixed with hot primary coolant, and then entrained into a reactor vessel. Insufficient flow mixing may cause temperature stratification and steam condensation. In addition, flow vibration may cause thermal stresses in surrounding structures. This will reduce the life of the reactor vessel. Due to the importance of PTS phenomenon, in this study, calculation was performed for Test 1 among six types of OECD/NEA ROSA tests with ANSYS CFX R.17. Predicted results were then compared to measured data. Additionally, because temperature difference between the hot coolant at the inlet of the cold leg and the cold cooling water at the inlet of the ECCS injection line is 200 K or more, buoyancy force due to density difference might have significant effect on thermal-hydraulic characteristics of flow. Therefore, in this study, the necessity to include buoyancy force term in governing equations for accurate prediction of single phase thermal stratification in both cold legs and downcomer by ECCS injection was numerically studied.

For the development of an improved upper-stage engine, research on a staged combustion cycle liquid rocket engine is in progress. A cold flow test, ignition test, and combustion test plans were established and performed to develop reignition combustion technology. In order to solve the problem of purge gas flowing into the fuel line, which may cause cavitation in the turbo pump during reignition, the test results of each stage were analyzed. Based on the analysis results, the purge gas inflow problem was solved by reducing the overlapping time between the operation of the bubble removal valve and the opening of the purge valve and the engine fuel valve. Based on this, the reignition combustion test was successfully performed.

Solid Rocket Motor(SRM) has advantages such as - high specific impulse, operational safety and simplicity in design and manufacturing process but thrust magnitude can't be controlled. For studying of pintle nozzle that can control the thrust magnitude of SRM, cold flow test and numerical analysis about needle type pintle shape were performed and results were presented in this paper. As the results of this study, pintle tip's shape and nozzle contour were important design parameters because thrust performance and variable thrust range of pintle nozzle depend on them. Especially, the thrust of needle typed pintle nozzle adopted in this test was predicted 13% higher than normal nozzle without pintle.
