  • This study was conducted to evaluate on the freezing tolerance of introduced blueberry cultivars in Korea and to investigate availability of portable timber moisture meter for simple and rapid diagnosis of blueberry-shoot damage by freezing during wintering. Frost tolerance of blueberry cultivars showed big difference that rates of blueberry-shoot death were widely distributed from about 0% to 100% after wintering. Optical density in TTC reduction of blueberry twig treated low temperature was low in order of $-40^{\circ}C$ < $-21^{\circ}C$ < $4^{\circ}C$. Hardiness evaluation of visible injury in the cross-sectional surface color did not agree with that of rates of blueberry-shoot death during wintering. Lowest water content of blueberry stem measured by timber moisture tester during wintering was about 15%. During wintering, water contents of blueberry stems were higher at lower part of tree, but were low at end part of stems, and then when the blueberry grew again for spring, the water content gradually increased to 20~40%. Water content of blueberry stem with freezing injury during wintering decreased to under 5% by desiccation. Therefore it is assummed that the moisture content of blueberry stem injured by freezing during wintering was about under 14%, and it is expected that portable timber moisture meter could be available for rapid diagnosis of blueberry freezing injury in field.

  • This is a study of decrease in both stump pain and unidentified complaints after removal of neuroma on an amputated left thigh. The patient was a 44 year old woman who received an operation after a motorcycle accident 20th of March, 1991. She started a rehabilitation program in early June of the same year. How ever the patient complained of a squeezing pain on the amputated area. This symptom became more severe after the removal of the nails in September. The pain was perceived as a mental problem and the patient was released from the previous hospital. The pain continued and on the 9th of March, 1992, the patient was introduced to our pain clinic. The patient complained about the cold sensation and pressure pain of the amputated area at the beginning. Later she also expressed various unidentified complaints. No improvement resulted after conducting an epidural block and a lumbar sympathetic ganglion block. MMPI test showed psychological instability. Local injection showed some positive effects, which led to considerations concerning the possibility of neuroma. After confirming the existence of neuroma through CT and MRI, neuromectomy was performed. After the removal of neuroma, the unidentified complaints as well as the stump pain decreased.

  • The geographical distribution of freeze risk determines the latitudinal and altitudinal limits and the maximum acreage suitable for fruit production. Any changes in its pattern can affect the policy for climate change adaptation in fruit industry. High-definition digital maps for such applications are not available yet due to uncertainty in the combined responses of temperature and dormancy depth under the future climate scenarios. We applied an empirical freeze risk index, which was derived from the combination of the dormancy depth and threshold temperature inducing freeze damage to dormant buds of 'Changhowon Hwangdo' peach trees, to the high-definition digital climate maps prepared for the current (1971-2000), the near future (2011-2040) and the far future (2071-2100) climate scenarios. According to the geospatial analysis at a landscape scale, both the safe and risky areas will be expanded in the future and some of the major peach cultivation areas may encounter difficulty in safe overwintering due to weakening cold tolerance resulting from insufficient chilling. Our test of this method for the two counties representing the major peach cultivation areas in South Korea demonstrated that the migration of risky areas could be detected at a sub-grid scale. The method presented in this study can contribute significantly to climate change adaptation planning in agriculture as a decision aids tool.

  • To investigate the effects of the addition of Nb and Sn on the recrystallization of Zr- Sn-Nb alloys, both Vickers micro-hardness test and TEP measurement were carried out on cold-worked specimens annealed at various temperatures from $300^{\circ}C$ to 75$0^{\circ}C$. The microstructures of heat treated specimens were analyzed by optical microscope, SEM, and TEM. The study of microhardness and microstructures showed that both recrystallization process and grain growth were retarded as the activation energy was increased by the addition of Nb and Sn. Especially, the addition of Sn was more effective on retarding recrystallization. Precipitates were formed more easily when Nb was added because the solubility of Nb into Zr is lower than that of Sn. However, the recrystallization process was affected more by Sn than Nb because the strain field formed by substitutional Sn repressed the dislocation movement. TEP was increased due to the decrease of electron scattering as recovery and recrystallization were proceeded and saturated when the recrystallization completed. However, when precipitates formed, TEP was increased because the decrease of solute concentration near the precipitates caused the decrease of electron scattering.

  • The sensory properties in Alaska pollack sikhae were compared in 3 different temperature conditions, 5$^{\circ}C$, 20$^{\circ}C$ and alternating temperature(stored at 5$^{\circ}C$ after 10 days of fermentation at 20$^{\circ}C$), respectively, during fermentation. The change of instrumental texture including hardness, cohesiveness, adhesiveness and chewiness increased and/or decreased without significant difference in the sikhae fermented at 5$^{\circ}C$ during fermentation. Three profiles, hardness, chewiness and cohesiveness in the sikhae fermented at 20$^{\circ}C$ increased up to 12 day and then decreased, whereas those in alternating temperature decreased significantly. From the acceptance test during fermentation, sikhae products fermented for 14 days at 5$^{\circ}C$, 9 days at 20$^{\circ}C$ and 13 days at alternating temperature were superior in sensory properties. The score more over 5 point in overall acceptance was maintained until 14 days in 5$^{\circ}C$, 9 days in 20$^{\circ}C$ and 13 days in alternating temperature, respectively, and particularly, alternating temperature condition was superior to the different temperature conditions. The sensory texture and overall acceptance had the high positive correlation with chewiness and taste, respectively. From the result of quantitative descriptive analysis, the intensities of acidic odor and taste in alternating temperature maintained and/or increased during 27 days of fermentation, whereas those in sikhae fermented at 5$^{\circ}C$ decreased. These results demonstrated that cold chain system such as alternating temperature was needed for shelf-life extension and producing of marketable Allaska pollack sikhae.

  • In case of tunnels in cold regions, a freeze of groundwater around tunnel may act as a barrier of tunnel drainage in winter, or may cause the inner extrusion of lining. In spite of that, a design of insulation for preventing the frost damage of tunnel lining has not been introduced in Korea, while foreign countries such as Norway and so on have a standard on insulation. In this study, a few freezing cases of road tunnels have been reviewed, and the results show that the freezing protection is necessary. In order to characterize the thermal distribution in the tunnel, following measurements have been performed at Hwa-ak tunnel; the temperature distribution by longitudinal lengths, the internal temperature of lining and the temperature distribution of the ground under pavement. From these measurements, the characteristics of the tunnel's internal temperature distribution due to temperature change in the air has been analyzed. Based on the measurement results on the temperature distribution at Hwa-ak tunnel, thermal flow tests on the rock specimen with and without insulation have been performed in the artificial climate chamber to investigate the performance of the insulation. Also, a number of 3D numerical analyses have been performed to propose appropriate insulation and insulation thicknesses for different conditions, which could prevent the frost damage of tunnel lining. As a result of the numerical analysis, air freezing index of 291$^{\circ}C{\cdot}$ Hr has been suggested as the threshold value for freezing criteria of groundwater behind the tunnel lining.

  • 'Hwaweon 6' was developed from a cross between 'Hwaseongbyeo' and a wild species, Oryza minuta L. (Acc. No. 101154) based on marker-assisted selection and backcrossing. The recurrent parent 'Hwaseongbyeo' is a high grain quality cultivar with medium maturity. Hwaweon 6 is nearly isogenic to Hwaseongbyeo except a small O. minuta introgressed segment on chromosome 7 harboring genes related with spikelets per panicle. The preliminary and replicated yield trial was conducted at Chungnam National University and Chungcheongnamdo Agricultural Research & Extension (CARES), Yesan in 2009 and 2010. The local adaptability test was carried out by the National Seed Management Office (NSMO) in 2011 and 2012. This cultivar was registered to NSMO with a cultivar designated as Hwaweon 6. This cultivar averaged 80cm in culm length and has a medium growth duration. Milled rice of Hwaweon 6 is translucent and the grain quality traits are comparable to those of the recurrent parent. The average yield potential of Hwaweon 6 in grain was about 6.57 MT/ha at the ordinary fertilizer level for two years about 3.0% higher than that of Hwaseongbyeo due to an introgression of the quantitative trait locus (QTL) for spikelets per panicle (qSPP7) from O. minuta. This variety is comparable to Hwaseongbyeo in low temperature germinability and cold tolerance. The qSPP7 QTL would be useful in enhancing yield potential in rice breeding program.

  • Background: Street vendors spend relatively more time near roadways and are vulnerable to air pollution related health disorders. However, there is limited information on the quality of the air they breathe. The objectives of this present study were to calculate the mass concentration of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) in eight size fractions ($PM_{0.4-0.7}$, $PM_{0.7-1.1}$, $PM_{1.1-2.1}$, $PM_{2.1-3.3}$, $PM_{3.3-4.7}$, $PM_{4.7-5.8}$, $PM_{5.8-9.0}$, and $PM_{9.0--0{\mu}m}$) at commercial (CML) and residential site (RSL) in Dehradun city from November 2015 to May 2016. To estimate the corresponding respiratory deposition dose (RDDs) in alveolar (AL), tracheobronchial (TB), and head airway (HD) region on street vendors working at CML and RSL. To find the association of atmospheric PM with RDDs and the incidence of respiratory related disorders among street vendors. Methods: Andersen cascade impactor was employed for calculating the PM mass concentration. Questionnaire based health survey among street vendors were carried out through personal interview. Results: A significant difference (p < 0.05; t-test) between the mean $PM_{0.4-10{\mu}m}$ mass concentration at CML and RSL was observed with ($mean{\pm}SD$) $84.05{\pm}14.5$ and $77.23{\pm}11.7{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$, respectively. RDDs in AL, TB and HD region at CML was observed to be 9.9, 7.8, and 7.3% higher than at RSL, respectively. Health survey revealed 1.62, 0.96, 0.04, and 0.57 times higher incidence of cold, cough, breathlessness, and chest pain, respectively with street vendors at CML compared to RSL. Conclusion: The site characteristics plays a major role in the respiratory health status of street vendors at Dehradun.

  • Precast concrete (PC) structure is one of the type of the structures which is made in a facility prior to installing it to a construction field. The contact surfaces between two PC structures should be treated for obtaining enough binding force by inducing prestressing force. However, in the many cases, the contact surface causes the crack and leakage of water. These cracks and water leakage can cause the corrosion of the rebar, and the corrosion of the rebar can severely reduce the long-term durability. In this study, the SMA wire connector is suggested to solve the problem with the contact surfaces between two PC structures. The pull-out resistance of the suggested SMA wire connector is evaluated by conducting the tests to find the effect of the number of wires, shape of connector part, and shape memory effect. As a result of this study, the empirical formula is suggested to estimate the pull-out resistance related with the effects of the shape of the connector, shape memory effect, and the adhesive force. The validity between the estimated pull-out resistance and the measured value is confirmed.

  • This study aimed to generate a probability distribution model based on temperature data of frozen food storage facility as input variables for microbial risk assessment (MRA). We visited 8 food-handling businesses to collect temperature data from their cold storage warehouses. The overall mean temperature inside the storage facilities was $-20.48{\pm}3.08^{\circ}C$, with 20.4% of the facilities having above $-18^{\circ}C$, with minimum and maximum temperature values of -10.3 and $-25.80^{\circ}C$ respectively. Temperature distributions by space locations of natural and forced convection were $-22.57{\pm}0.84$ and $-17.81{\pm}1.47^{\circ}C$, $-22.49{\pm}1.05$ and $-17.94{\pm}1.44^{\circ}C$, and $-22.68{\pm}1.03$ and $-18.08{\pm}1.42^{\circ}C$ in the upper (2.4~4 m), middle (1.5~2.4 m), and lower (0.7~1.5 m) shelves, respectively. Probability distributions from the temperature data were obtained using the program @RISK. Statistical ranking was determined using goodness of fit to determine the probability distribution model. Our results show that a log-normal distribution [5.9731, 3.3483, shift (-26.4281)] is most appropriate for relative MRA conduction.
