The amount of data is increasing significantly as information and communication technology advances, mobile, cloud computing, the Internet of Things and social network services become commonplace. As the data grows exponentially, there is a growing demand for services that recommend the information that users want from large amounts of data. Collaborative filtering method is commonly used in information recommendation methods. One of the problems with collaborative filtering-based recommendation method is the cold start problem. In this paper, we propose a method to improve the cold start problem. That is, it solves the cold start problem by mapping the item evaluation data that does not exist to the initial user to the automatically generated data from the mobile app. We describe the main contents of the proposed method and explain the proposed method through the book recommendation scenario. We show the superiority of the proposed method through comparison with existing methods.

As deep learning technology in natural language and visual processing has rapidly developed, collaborative filtering-based recommendation systems using deep learning technology are being actively introduced in the recommendation field. In this study, OCF-GAN, a hybrid collaborative filtering model using GAN, was proposed to solve the one-class and cold-start problems, and its usefulness was verified through performance evaluation. OCF-GAN based on conditional GAN consists of a generator that generates a pattern similar to the actual user preference pattern and a discriminator that tries to distinguish the actual preference pattern from the generated preference pattern. When the training is completed, user preference vectors are generated based on the actual distribution of preferred items. In addition, the cold-start problem was solved by using a hybrid collaborative filtering recommendation method that additionally utilizes user and item profiles. As a result of the performance evaluation, it was found that the performance of the OCF-GAN with additional information was superior in all indicators of the Top 5 and Top 20 recommendations compared to the existing GAN-based recommender. This phenomenon was more clearly revealed in experiments with cold-start users and items.
Optimal design of an automotive catalytic converter for minimization of cold-start emissions is numerically performed using a micro genetic algorithm for two optimization problems: optimal geometry design of the monolith for various operating conditions and optimal axial catalyst distribution. The optimal design process considered in this study consists of three modules: analysis, optimization, and control. The analysis module is used to evaluate the objective functions with a one-dimensional single channel model and the Romberg integration method. It obtains new design variables from the control module, produces the CO cumulative emissions and the integral value of a catalyst distribution function over the monolith volume, and provides objective function values to the control module. The optimal design variables for minimizing the objective functions are determined by the optimization module using a micro genetic algorithm. The control module manages the optimal design process that mainly takes place in both the analysis and optimization modules.
With the rapid increase of information on the World Wide Web, finding useful information on the internet has become a major problem. The recommendation system helps users make decisions in complex data areas where the amount of data available is large. There are many methods that have been proposed in the recommender system. Collaborative filtering is a popular method widely used in the recommendation system. However, collaborative filtering methods still have some problems, namely cold-start problem. In this paper, we propose a movie recommendation system by using social network analysis and collaborative filtering to solve this problem associated with collaborative filtering methods. We applied personal propensity of users such as age, gender, and occupation to make relationship matrix between users, and the relationship matrix is applied to cluster user by using community detection based on edge betweenness centrality. Then the recommended system will suggest movies which were previously interested by users in the group to new users. We show shown that the proposed method is a very efficient method using mean absolute error.
Collaborative Filtering (CF) suffers from two major problems:sparsity and cold-start recommendation. This paper focuses on the cold-start problem for new customers with no purchase records and the sparsity problem for the customers with very few purchase records. For the purpose, we propose a method for the new customer recommendation by using a combined measure based on three well-used centrality measures to identify the customers who are most likely to become neighbors of the new customer. To alleviate the sparsity problem, we also propose a hybrid approach that applies our method to customers with very few purchase records and CF to the other customers with sufficient purchases. To evaluate the effectiveness of our method, we have conducted several experiments using a data set from a department store in Korea. The experiment results show that the combination of two measures makes better recommendations than not only a single measure but also the best-seller-based method and that the performance is improved when applying the hybrid approach.

Since regulations of exhaust emissions are continuously reinforced, studies to reduce harmful emissions during the cold start period of SI engines have been carried out very extensively worldwide. During the cold start period, raising the temperature of cold exhaust gas is a key strategy to minimize the light-off time of three way catalysts. In this study, a synthetic gas containing a large amount of hydrogen was injected into the exhaust manifold to raise the exhaust gas temperature and to reduce harmful emissions. The authors tried to evaluate changes in exhaust gas temperature and harmful emissions through controlling the engine operating parameters such as ignition timings and lambda values. Also the authors investigated both combustion stability and reduction of harmful emissions. Experimental results showed that combustion of the synthetic gas in the exhaust manifold is a very effective way for solving the problems of harmful emissions and light-off time. The results also showed that the strategy of retarded ignition timings and increased air/fuel ratios with ESGI is effective in raising exhaust gas temperature and reducing harmful emissions. Futhermore, the results showed that engine operating parameters ought to be controlled to lambda = 1.2 and ignition timing = $0{\sim}3^{\circ}$ conditions to reduce harmful emissions effectively under stable combustion conditions.

Machine learning-based structural health monitoring (ML-based SHM) methods are researched extensively in the recent decade due to the availability of advanced information and sensing technology. ML methods are well-known for their pattern recognition capability for complex problems. However, the main obstacle of ML-based SHM is that it often requires pre-collected historical data for model training. In most actual scenarios, damage presence can be detected using the unsupervised learning method through anomaly detection, but to further identify the damage types would require prior knowledge or historical events as references. This creates the cold-start problem, especially for new and unobserved structures. Modal-based methods identify damages based on the changes in the structural global properties but often require dense measurements for accurate results. Therefore, a two-stage hybrid modal-machine learning damage detection scheme is proposed. The first stage detects damage presence using Principal Component Analysis-Frequency Response Function (PCA-FRF) in an unsupervised manner, whereas the second stage further identifies the damage. To solve the cold-start problem, mode shape assessment using the first mode is initiated when no trained model is available yet in the second stage. The damage identified by the modal-based method would be stored for future training. This work highlights the performance of the scheme in alleviating the cold-start issue as it transitions through different phases, starting from zero damage sample available. Results showed that single and multiple damages can be identified at an acceptable accuracy level even when training samples are limited.
The current recommendation systems have problems including the difficulty of figuring out whether they recommend items that actual users have preference for or have simple interest in, the scarcity of data to recommend proper items due to the extremely small number of users, and the cold-start issue of the dropping system performance to recommend items that can satisfy users according to the influx of new users. In an effort to solve these problems, this study implemented a movie recommendation system to ensure user satisfaction by using the Fuzzy-Analytic Hierarchy Process, which can reflect uncertain situations and problems, and the data partition algorithm to group similar items among the given ones. The data of a survey on movie preference with 61 users was applied to the system, and the results show that it solved the data scarcity problem based on the Fuzzy-AHP and recommended items fit for a user with the data partition algorithm even with the influx of new users. It is thought that research on the density-based clustering will be needed to filter out future noise data or outlier data.
Collaborative Filtering (CF), one of the most successful technologies among recommender systems, is a system assisting users in easily finding the useful information. However, despite its success and popularity, CF encounters a serious limitation with quality evaluation, called cold start problems. To alleviate this limitation, in this paper, we propose a unique method of building models derived from explicit ratings and applying the models to CF recommender systems. The proposed method is divided into two phases, an offline phase and an online phase. First, the offline phase is a building pre-computed model phase in which most of tasks can be conducted. Second, the online phase is either a prediction or recommendation phase in which the models are used. In a model building phase, we first determine a priori predicted rating and subsequently identify prediction errors for each user. From this error information, an error-reflected model is constructed. The error-reflected model, which is reflected average prior prediction errors of user neighbors and item neighbors, can make accurate predictions in the situation where users or items have few opinions; this is known as the cold start problems. In addition, in order to reduce the re-building tasks, the error-reflected model is designed such that the model is updated effectively and users'new opinions are reflected incrementally, even when users present a new rating feedback.
