  • The objective of this study is to propose an experimental calibration facility in which a heat flux sensor can be calibrated under conductive condition by using helium gas. The heat flux calibration facility was designed, simulated and manufactured for use in a high heat transfer condition. It delivers heat fluxes up to a maximum of 35 KW $m^{-2}$. A copper block heated electrically with 3.5 KW power is designed to produce uniform temperature up to 600 K across its face. High heat fluxes are provided between hot plate and cold plate by 1 mm height helium filled gap. A cold plate is maintained around 300 K through pool boiling using a refrigerant and water-cooled heat exchanger. A simulation was conducted to verify the design of the main test section. To verify the performance of calibration facility, a heat flux sensor was examined. The measured heat fluxes were compared to the calculated one.

  • Miniaturization of subsystems including propulsion systems is recent trends in spacecraft technology. Small space vehicle propulsion is not only a technological challenge of a scaling system down, but also a combination of fundamental flow/combustion constraints. In this paper, physical constraints of micronozzle for cold gas micro-thruster are reviewed and discussed. Method to measure small thrust are also described.

  • Entrained coal gasification tests with Datong coal were performed to assess the influence of oxygen/coal ration and pressure. When gasification condition in oxygen/coal ratio has changed from 0.5 to 1.0, optimal gasification condition from low pressure runs was oxygen/coal ratio of approximately 0.9 where CO was produced about 40% and H, about 20%. Under the pressure condition of 12-14 atmospheres, optimal oxygen/coal ratio value was in the region of 0.6 where CO was produced about 55% and H2about 25%. From these results, it was found that the oxygen/ coal ratio for the maximum production of CO and H, was decreasing with the increase in gasifier pressure and also, with increasing oxygen content, carbon conversion was increased. For the Chinese Datong coal, cold gas efficiency was in the range of 40-80%.

  • During cold-start period, the reduction of exhaust emissions is a challenging task. To decrease harmful gaseous substances such as HC, it is necessary to realize a fast catalyst warm-up. In this study, the performance of dual pipe exhaust system have been carried out through different test mode. From measurement of gas temperature and HC concentration, the following conclusions were derived ; 1) Compared with single pipe, dual pipe exhaust system remarkably increase temperature of exhaust gas going through M.C.C(Main Catalytic Converter). 2) W.C.C.(Warm-up Catalytic Converter) also decreases HC emission. To reduce HC emission, it is helpful to use W.C.C. as well as dual pipe exhaust system. 3) Using finite element method, it is shown that inner parts have much higher distribution of temperature than outer parts.

  • thermodynamic cycle analysis has been performed for the power generation systems to utilize the cold energy of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The power cycle used the air or water at room temperature as a heat source and the LNG at cryogenic temperature as a heat sink. Among manypossible configurations of the cycle. the open Rankine cycle. and the closed Brayton cycle, and the closed Rankine cycle are selected for the basic analysis because of their practical importance. The power output per unit mass of LNG has been analytically calculated for various design parameters such as the pressure ratio. the mass flow rate. the adiabatic efficiency. the heat exchanger effectiveness. or the working fluid. The optimal conditions for the parameters are presented to maximize the power output and the design considerations are discussed. It is concluded that the open Rankine cycle is the most recormmendable both in thermodynamic efficency and in practice.

  • Cycle analysis has been performed to find out the optimum design point of the BOG re-liquefaction plant. The cycle state, defined by three cycle variables, was mainly described by the three cold temperatures of the three-pass heat exchanger, on which the constraints by the heat exchanger are imposed. The cycle states which are confined within a domain limited by the temperature constraints were the primary issue of this study. The BOG mass within the domain was analyzed first and then the cycle performance was related to the BOG mass afterwards, which enabled us to explain the observed behavior of the cycle performance under the temperature constraints by the heat exchanger. A good cycle performance could be ensured if the two cold Nitrogen temperatures of the three temperatures were placed close together near $-140^{\circ}C$ while the BOG temperature is kept far above enough, but not too far, from $-140^{\circ}C$ such that it does not interfere in their optimum temperature range.

  • Thermoacoustic refrigerators are operated with acoustic power to pump heat. The acoustic standing wave displaces the gas In the channels of the stack while compressing and expanding. The thermal interaction between the osillating gas he surface of the stack generates an acoustic heat pumping. in this study, a thermoacoustic refrigerator is composed of a resonator of 4cm diameter, stack of plates, heat exchangers and cooling part. Length of the hot heat exchangers, the stack of plates and the cold heat exchanger are 9mm, 8mm and 6mm respectively. Using helium as a coolant at frequency of 516Hz, the cold-part temperature of exchanger fell to $-19.0^{\circ}C$ after 1hours.

  • In this study, the effect of cryogenic liquefied natural gas leakage and loading on liquefied natural gas cargo hold is investigated to observe the performance of the polymer foam material that comprises the cryogenic insulation of the cargo hold. The primary barriers of liquefied natural gas carrier that are in contact with the liquefied natural gas will leak if damage is accumulated, owing to fluid impact loads or liquefied natural gas loading / unloading over a long period. The leakage of the cryogenic fluid affects the interior of the polymer foam, which is a porous closed cell structure, and causes a change in behavior with respect to the working load. In this study, mechanical properties of polyisocyanurate foam specimen, which is a polymer material used as insulation, are evaluated. The performance of the specimens, owing to the cold brittleness and the impregnation effects of the cryogenic fluids, are quantitatively compared and analyzed.

  • The basic flow configuration is composed of a plane, double shear layer where relatively thin mid gas layer is sandwiched between air and fuel stream. The present study describes numerical investigations concerning the combustion enhancement according to a variation of mid layer thickness. In this case, the effect of heat release in turbulent mixing layers is important. For the numerical solution, a fully conservative unsteady $2^{nd}$ order time accurate sub-iteration method and $2^{nd}$ order TVD scheme are used with the finite volume method including k-${\omega}$ SST model. The results consists of three categories; single shear layer consists of fuel and air, inert gas sandwiched between fuel and air, cold fuel gas sandwiched between fuel and air. The numerical calculations has been carried out in case of 1, 2, 4 mm of mid layer thickness. The height of total gas stream is 4 cm. The combustion region is broadened in case of inert gas layer of 2, 4 mm thickness and cold fuel layer of 4 mm thickness compared with single shear layer.

  • Numerical schemes for the simulation of the cold gas flow in the SF6 puffer type circuit breaker is presented. The governing equation is axisymmetric compressible Euler Equation and FVM is used to analyze the behavior of flow. The upwind scheme is used to avoid numerical instability and MUSCL is used to obtain high order accuracy. For the efficient calculation, AF-ADI scheme is used. The simulation result shows good agreement with the experimental data.
