In this study, the electrochemical performance of surface modified carbon using the PFO (pyrolyzed fuel oil) was investigated by chemical activation with KOH and $K_2CO_3$. PFO was heat treated at $390{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ for 1~3h to prepared the pitch. Three carbon precursors (pitch) prepared by the thermal reaction were 3903 (at $390^{\circ}C$ for 3h), 4001(at $400^{\circ}C$ for 1h) and 4002 (at $400^{\circ}C$ for 2h). Also, the effect of chemical activation catalysts and mixing time on the development of porosity during carbonization was investigated. The prepared carbon was analyzed by BET and FE-SEM. It was shown that chemical activation with KOH could be successfully used to develop carbon with specific surface area ($3.12m^2/g$) and mean pore size (22 nm). The electrochemical characteristics of modified carbon as the anode were investigated by constant current charge/discharge, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance tests. The coin cell using pitch (4002) modified by KOH has better initial capacity (318 mAh/g) than that of other pitch coin cells. Also, this prepared carbon anode appeared a high initial efficiency of 80% and the retention rate capability of 2C/0.1 C was 92%. It is found that modified carbon anode showed improved cycling and rate capacity performance.
Tin-based materials for lithium ion battery have been proposed as new anode candidates owing to their higher specific capacity and relatively high lithium insertion potential. Tin-based materials have been extensively studied as possible replacements for carbon anodes in lithium ion batteries. However, the large volume expansion results in severe particle cracking with loss of electrical contact, giving irreversible capacity losses which prevent the widespread use of tin-based materials in lithium batteries. So remaining studies of tin-based materials are alleviating volume expansion and improving cycle performance. In this work, $SnO_2-SiO_2$ composites were manufactured with sol-gel method to overcome their volume expansion. Carbon was coated with 10 vol% propylene gas. The characteristics of active material and the effect of heat treatment were investigated with TG/DTA, XRD, SEM and FT-IR. Electrochemical characteristics of these composites were measured with CR2032 type coin cells. Carbon coated $SnO_2-SiO_2$at $300^{\circ}C$ heat treatment showed the best electrochemical performance.
In this study, homo and copolymers of 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidyl methacrylate(TMA) and synthesized styrene derivative, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-4-vinylbenzyl ether(TVBE) were obtained by radical polymerization and oxidized to produce corresponding polymer radicals. The polymer radicals were mixed with carbon black, binders and coated onto Al current collector. The battery performance is then characterized by fabricating coin cells. As results, the polystyrene based organic radicals show lower oxidize efficiency and discharge capacity than methacrylate based one. However, the former shows better capacities from discharge experiments performed at $60^{\circ}C$ which suggests a possible way to overcome the high temperature fade out of performance in usual organic radical batteries. Also as expected, an excellent C-rate performance is observed in all the cells consisted of organic polymer radicals.
Mass production-capable $Li_2MnSiO_4$ powder was synthesized for use as cathode material in state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are main powder sources for high tech-end digital electronic equipments and electric vehicles in the near future and they must possess high specific capacity and durable charge-discharge characteristics. Amorphous silicone was quite superior to crystalline one as starting material to fabricate silicone oxide with high reactivity between precursors of sol-gel type reaction intermediates. The amorphous silicone starting material also has beneficial effect of efficiently controlling secondary phases, most notably $Li_xSiO_x$. Lastly, carbon was coated on $Li_2MnSiO_4$ powders by using sucrose to afford some improved electrical conductivity. The carbon-coated $Li_2MnSiO_4$ cathode material was further characterized using SEM, XRD, and galvanostatic charge/discharge test method for morphological and electrochemical examinations. Coin cell was subject to 1.5-4.8 V at C/20, where 74 mAh/g was observed during primary discharge cycle.

High-voltage operation of the lithium ion battery is one of the advantageous approaches to obtain high energy capacity without changing the conventional cell components and structure. However, operating at harsh condition inevitably results in severe side reactions at the electrode surface and structural disintegration of active material particles. Herein we coated layers composed of $Al_2O_3$ and ZnO on the electrode based on NCM using atomic layer deposition (ALD). Thicker layers of novel Al-doped ZnO (AZO) coating compared to conventional ALD coated layers are prepared. Cathode based on NCM with the varying AZO coating thickness are fabricated and used for coin cell assembly. Effect of ALD coating thickness on the charge-discharge cycle behavior obtained at high-voltage operation was investigated.

Si-C materials were synthesized by the heating the mixture of silicon and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The electrochemical properties of the Si-C materials as the high capacitive anode materials of lithium secondary batteries were evaluated by the galvanostatic charge-discharge test through 2032 type $Si-C{\mid}Li$ coin cells. Charge-discharge tests were performed at C/10 hour rate(C = 372 mAh/g). Initial discharge and charge capacities of $Si-C{\mid}Li$ cell using a Si-C material derived from PVDF(20wt.%) were found to be 1,830 and 526 mAh/g respectively. The initial discharge-charge characteristics of the developed Si-C electrode were analyzed by the electrochemical galvanostatic test adopting the capacity limited charge cut-off condition(GISOC). The range of reversible specific capacity IIE(intercalation efficiency at initial discharge-charge) and IICs(surface irreversible specific capacity) were 216 mAh/g, 68 % and 31 mAh/g, respectively.

$LiFePO_4$ is a promising active material (AM) suitable for use in high performance lithium-ion batteries used in automotive applications that require high current capabilities and a high degree of safety and reliability. In this study, an optimization of the electrode design parameters was performed to produce high capacity lithium-ion batteries based on $LiFePO_4$/graphite electrodes. The electrode thickness and porosity (AM density) are the two most important design parameters influencing the cell capacity. We quantified the effects of cathode thickness and porosity ($LiFePO_4$ electrode) on cell performance using a detailed one-dimensional electrochemical model. In addition, the effects of those parameters were experimentally studied through various coin cell tests. Based on the numerical and experimental results, the optimal ranges for the electrode thickness and porosity were determined to maximize the cell capacity of the $LiFePO_4$/graphite lithium-ion batteries.

$LiNi_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}Co_{1/3}O_2$ cathode material was synthesized by a mixed hydroxide methode. The surface of the $LiNi_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}Co_{1/3}O_2$ was coated with a carbon by using a sol-gel method to improve further its electrochemical properties. Electrochemical studies were performed by assembling 2032 coin cells with lithium metal as an anode. OSC (differential scanning calorimetry) data showed that exothermic reactions of charged to 4.3V vs. Li was suppressed in the carbon-coated materials. The carbon-coated $LiNi_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}Co_{1/3}O_2$ showed the improved rate capability and thermal stability.
Polycrystalline powder of LixNi0.85Co0.15O2 was synthesized by pyrolyzing a powder precursor obtained by the PVA-precursor method. Coin cells of lithium-ion rechargeable battery were assembled, whose the cathodes were fabricated from the crystalline powders of LixNi0.85Co0.15O2 synthesized by the method. The effect of synthetic variation on the property of the cell was tested by carrying out 100 consecutive cycles of charge-dis-charge on the cells. The property of the cell was largely influenced by the pyrolysis conditions applied for the synthesis of the LixNi0.85Co0.15O2. Depending on whether the pyrolysis was carried out in standing air or in the flow of dry air, the discharge capacity and cycle-reversibility of the cell varied in large extent. When the powder precursor was pyrolyzed in standing air, a minor phase of lithium carbonate was remained in the LixNi0.85Co0.15O2. The carbon containing powder precursor had to be pyrolyzed in the flow of dry air to eliminate the minor phase. In the flow of dry air, the lithium carbonate in the precursor was eliminated over 500-700。C without any prominent heat event. By controlling the flow of air over the precursor during its pyrolysis, particle size could also be altered. The effect of flowing dry air, during first step pyrolysis or during second step heat treatment, on the property of the cell was discussed.
Si/C/CNF composites as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries were examined to improve the capacity and cycle performance. Si/C/CNF composites were prepared by the fabrication process including the synthesis and magnesiothermic reduction of SBA-15 to obtain Si/MgO by ball milling and the carbonization of phenol resin with CNF and HCl etching. Prepared Si/C/CNF composites were then analysed by BET, XRD, FE-SEM and TGA. Among SBA-15 samples synthesized at reaction temperatures between 50 and $70^{\circ}C$, the SBA-15 at $60^{\circ}C$ showed the largest specific surface area. Also the electrochemical performances of Si/C/CNF composites as an anode electrode were investigated by constant current charge/discharge test, cyclic voltammetry and impedance tests in the electrolyte of LiPF6 dissolved in mixed organic solvents (EC : DMC : EMC = 1 : 1 : 1 vol%). The coin cell using Si/C/CNF composites (Si : CNF = 97 : 3 in weight) showed better capacity (1,947 mAh/g) than that of other composition coin cells. The capacity retention ratio decreased from 84% (Si : CNF = 97 : 3 in weight) to 77% (Si : CNF = 89 : 11 in weight). It was found that the Si/C/CNF composite electrode shows an improved cycling performance and electric conductivity.
