  • Five model coils of 6.6 kV motor were manufactured with several defects. These stator coils have artificial defects such as void of groundwall insulation, removal of semi-conductive coating and damage of strand insulation. Epoxy-mica coupler(80 pF) was connected to five model coil terminals. The voltage applied to the coils was 3.81 kV, 4.76 kV, 6.0 kV and 6.6 kV, respectively. Partial discharge(PD) tests performed in the laboratory and shield room. Digital PD detector(PDD) and turbine generator analyzer(TGA) were used to measure PD activity. TGA summarizes each plot with two quantities such as the normalized quantity number(NQN) and the peak PD magnitude(Qm). The PD levels in pC were measured with PDD. PD patterns of model coils were indicated the internal and slot discharges. PD patterns are consistent with the result of measurement using PDD and TGA instruments. AC breakdown test was performed on five model coils in order to confirm the result of PD measurements. All the failures were located in a line-end coil at the exit from the core slot.

  • We investigated the stability of cryocooler-cooled high-temperature superconducting (HTS) coils by using a computer program based on FEM. In this study, the current at which "thermal runaway" occurs, which depends on the relationship between the cooling power of the cryocooler and the heat generation in HTS coils, was adopted as a stability criterion of cryocooler operating HTS coils. It was shown that cryocooler-cooled HTS coil was stable in operating current above the critical current from the numerical analysis results by HTS model coil. And also, if we efficiently remove the heat generation from HTS coils by potimizing heat drain, the ramp-rate limitation can be mitigated because the effect of AC loss by the current rise was too small. Furthermore, in the case of pulsed operation; the HTS model coil is ramped from zero to the peak value in one second and back to zero current in one second, such as the operation of SMES device, the peak value of poerating current is 1.5-2 times greater than that of the thermal runaway current.

  • In this paper, we have studied about design and fabrication of the actively shielded superconducting MRI magnet. Nonlinear optimization methods are usually used to find optimum coil configurations. However the selection of initial coil configurations is very difficult. In case bad initial data are used, it is even impossible to find optimum coil configurations which satisfy predefined constraints. We have developed computer optimization program which consists of two steps. Initial coil configurations are easily selected through linear optimization in the first step and optimum coil configurations are found through nonlinear optimization in the second step. We have also studied about superconducting shim coils to cancel error fields caused by coil fabrication errors. Many researchers published design concepts of shim coil. However all these studies are for shim coil design using filamentary coils with single turn, Shim coils with multi-turns should be used to produce enough field strength to cancel error fields. We have developed computer program for the design of shim coils which have proper thickness and length. An actively shielded superconducting MRI magnet with a small warm bore was fabricated and four sets of superconducting shim coils were equipped. The magnetic field distributions were measured and field correction was carried out using shim coils.

  • A new design scheme of actively-shielded x,y-gradient coils for Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI) is proposed. An actively-shielded x-gradient coil has been designed as an example and the results are presented. In MRI, gradient coils are needed for spatial selection and position coding to obtain the position information of the NMR signal. They are usually switched on and off during imaging and the eddy current induced by the current switching usually degrades the final image quality To reduce or remove this kind of problems, the active shielding has been proposed few years ago. In this paper, a new design scheme for actively-shielded x,y-gradient coils, namely, a minimum-power design scheme using current-loop elements, has been proposed. Its utility in designing MRI gradient coils has been shown by using simulation. The design scheme seems to be useful for actively-shielded transverse gradient coils, even of non-cylindrical or of arbitrary-selected shapes.

  • The magnet system of KSTAR(korean Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) is consisted of 16 TF (Toroidal Field) coils and 14 PF (Poroidal Field) coils. Internal cooling CICC(Cable in Conduit Conductor) type conductor is used for both of TF and PF coil systems. The conduit material for $Nb_3Sn$ cable is Incoloy 908 and 316LN stainless-steel was used as conduit material for NbTi cable. $Nb_3Sn$ CICC is used for all TF coils and PF1-5 coils while NbTi CICC is used for PF6 and 7 coils. $Nb_3Sn$ and NbTi strands were made for KSTAR superconducting strand. They are satisfied with KSTAR superconducotr requirements. The $Nb_3Sn$ strands supplied from three companies; MELCO (Mitsubishi Electric Co.), OAS (Outokumpu Advanced Superconductor) and KAT (Kiswire Advanced Technology) were used. A special CICC jacketing system is developed for the KSTAR CICC fabrication which uses the tube-mill process consisted of forming, welding, sizing and squaring procedures. The. procedures for cabling and jacketing of CICC for TF and PF coils and their results including the geometrical specification and characteristics of strands are described.

  • The magnetic resonance method requires high quality factor(Q-factor) of resonators. Superconductor coils were used in this study to increase the Q-factor of wireless power transfer(WPT) systems in the magnetic resonance method. The results showed better transfer efficiency compared to copper coils. However, as superconducting coils should be cooled below critical temperatures, they require cooling containers. In this viewpoint, shielding materials for the cooling containers were applied for the analysis of the WPT characteristics. The shielding materials were applied at both ends of the transmitter and receiver coils. Iron, aluminum, and plastic were used for shielding. The electric field distribution and S-parameters (S11, S21) of superconducting coils were compared and analyzed according to the shield materials. As a result, plastic shielding showed better transfer efficiency, while iron and aluminum had less efficiency. Also, the maximum magnetic field distribution of the coils according to the shielding materials was analyzed. It was found that plastic shielding had 5 times bigger power transfer rate than iron or aluminum. It is suggested that the reliability of superconducting WPT systems can be secured if plastic is used for the cooling containers of superconducting resonance coils.

  • The superconducting coil system is one of the most important components in Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR), which has been operated since 2008. $Nb_3Sn$ and NbTi superconductors are being used for cable-in-conduit conductors (CICCs) of the KSTAR toroidal field (TF) and poloidal field (PF) coils. The CICCs are cooled by forced-flow supercritical helium about 4.5 K. The temperature, pressure and mass flow rate of the supercritical helium in the CICCs are interacting with each other during the operation of the coils. The complicate behaviors of the supercritical helium have an effect on the operation and the efficiency of the helium refrigeration system (HRS) by means of, for instance, pressure drop. The hydraulic characteristics of the supercritical helium have been monitored while the TF coils have stably achieved the full current of 35 kA. In other hands, the PF coils have been operated with various pulsed or bipolar mode, so the drastic changes happen in view of hydraulics. The heat load including AC loss on the coils has been analyzed according to the measurement. These activities are important to estimate the temperature margin in various PF operation conditions. In this paper, the latest hydraulic behaviors of PF coils during KSTAR operation are presented.

  • To develop a 100 hp high temperature superconducting(HTS) motor with high efficiency first in Korea, we fabricated a HTS field winding and test. HTS field winding is composed of sixteen HTS race track shaped coils wound with stainless steel-reinforced Bi-2223 tape conductor by react and wind fabrication method. Nomex paper was used for electrical insulation. Each of four magnet pole assemblies was constructed with four double pancake sub-coils, mechanically stacked and electrically in series. Four magnet assemblies were fixed on an aluminum support structure to make effective heat transfer. The Critical current (Ic) was 41.5A at 77K and self field. However the lowest Ic value of sub-coils was 35A. Joule heat generated by each joints between sub-coils was lower than 1mW at 77K and 34A. And Joule heat generated by the joints between field coils was lower than 10mW at 77K and 34A. Joule heat of the whole field winding was 1W at 77K and 32A. And so, the lowest Ic value of sub-coils was more important than Joule heats generated by all joints. The operating current must be lower than the lowest Ic of all the sub-coils. In this paper, design, construction and testing of HTS field winding, Joule heat generated by the joints, and operating current were discussed.

  • The iron core, which comprises the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using magnetic coupling of coils, can be operated in the saturation region, especially at the initial fault period. This operation of the iron core in the saturation region deteriorates the fault current limiting operation of the SFCL. To solve the saturation problem of the SFCL using magnetic coupling of coils, the iron core with two magnetic paths, which has an air-gap in one of them, was adopted. In this paper, the hysteresis characteristics of SFCL using magnetic coupling of coils, which were wound in the iron core with two magnetic paths, were analyzed. Through comparative analysis on the hysteresis characteristics of the iron core comprising SFCL, the hysteresis characteristics of the iron core with two magnetic paths were confirmed to be kept in the non-saturation region during the fault period and thus, the effective fault current limiting operation of the SFCL using the magnetic coupling of coils could be performed.

  • A relatively high operating frequency is required for efficient wireless power transfer (WPT). However, the alternating current (AC) resistance of coils increases sharply with operating frequency, which possibly degrades overall efficiency. Hence, the evaluation of coil AC resistance is critical in selecting operating frequency to achieve good efficiency. For a Litz wire coil, AC resistance is attributed to the magnetic field, which leads to the skin effect, the proximity effect, and the corresponding conductive resistance and inductive resistance in the coil. A numerical calculation method based on the Biot-Savart law is proposed to calculate magnetic field strength over strands in Litz wire planar spiral coils to evaluate their AC resistance. An optimized frequency can be found to achieve the maximum efficiency of a WPT system based on the predicted resistance. Sample coils are manufactured to verify the resistance analysis method. A prototype WPT system is set up to conduct the experiments. The experiments show that the proposed method can accurately predict the AC resistance of Litz wire planar spiral coils and the optimized operating frequency for maximum efficiency.
