  • We propose a new coherent optical receiver (COR) to detect optical receiver mode (ORM) subchannels selectively in coherent optical (CO) ORM division multiplexing (ORMDM) systems. In the CO-ORMDM systems, each optical channel is a linear sum of ORM subchannels, to obtain high spectral efficiencies (SEs). The COR uses an ORM subcarrier as its local oscillator (LO) and reads the transmitted data at the origin times of ORM signals. For example, if the mth ORM subcarrier is used as the LO, then the COR reads the data of the mth ORM subchannel. The proposed COR is fast and can make CO-ORMDM systems useful for real-time optical communication with high SE.

  • We propose a selective detection scheme based on pulse repetition considering the BER (Bit Error Rate) performance and complexity of coherent IR-UWB (Impulse Radio-Ultra Wide Band) systems. To take system complexity into account, the proposed scheme transmits the UWB signals by pulse repetition at the transmitter, like conventional PRC (Pulse Repetition Coding). However, to effectively improve BER performance of the system, the proposed scheme performs selective detection by estimating the SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) of the received pulse-repeated signal at the UWB receiver. Hence, the proposed scheme effectively improves BER performance of the coherent IR-UWB systems without increasing system complexity, as compared to the conventional PRC algorithm.

  • Degradation of bit-error-rate (BER), caused by atmospheric turbulence, seriously hinders the performance of coherent Free Space Optical (FSO) communication systems. An adaptive optics system proves to be effective in suppressing the atmospheric turbulence. The holographic modal wavefront sensor (HMWFS) proposed in our previous work, noted for its fast detecting rates and insensitivity to beam scintillation, is applied to the coherent FSO communication systems. In this paper, based on our previous work, we first introduce the principle of the HMWFS in brief and give the BER of the coherent FSO with homodyne detection in theory, and then analyze the improvement of BER for a coherent FSO system based on our previous simulation works. The results show that the wavefront sensor we propose is better for weak atmospheric turbulence. The most obvious advantages of HMWFS are fast detecting rates and insensitivity to beam scintillation.

  • Heterodyne efficiency is an indicator to evaluate the performance of space coherent laser communication systems. It is affected by signal light and local oscillator (LO) light amplitude, phase and polarization state. In this paper, based on the common heterodyne efficiency, a heterodyne efficiency model that can reflect polarization aberration of optical system is proposed. The heterodyne efficiency is analyzed when the signal light and the LO light are linearly polarized or circularly polarized. For a coherent communication optical system, when the incident signal light is right-circularly polarized light and the incident LO light is 45° linear polarized light. Based on the three-dimensional ray tracing theory and the heterodyne efficiency proposed in this paper, the change of polarization states and the distribution of heterodyne efficiency of the signal light and LO light influenced by the optical system's polarization aberration are analyzed. Analysis shows that the heterodyne efficiency model proposed in this paper can be used to evaluate coherent communication systems and reflect the influence of optical system polarization aberration.

  • In this letter, we investigate the performance of coherent free-space optical(FSO) systems under pulsed noise jamming conditions. In particular, we derive the average bit error probability of the coherent FSO systems with the pulsed noise jamming in a closed-form. Also, we derive the optimal fraction of symbol time of the jammer. We confirm the derived average error probability expressions by the exactly matching Monte-Carlo simulation results.

  • This study extends the modified linear feedback equalizer (MLFE), normally used for differentially coherent DPSK systems, to the equalization of double differentially coherent PSK (DDPSK) signals. By feeding back into the feedback part after modifying the equalizer output using decision feedback-based demodulation, the proposed equalizer can operate like an equalizer with a decision feedback structure. Simulation results showthat performances of the decision feedback demodulation-based feedback equalizer (DFD-FE) approach those of the DFE/coherent.

  • For sensitivity enhancement, the general assisted-GPS acquisition method adopts not only the coherent accumulation technique but also the non-coherent accumulation technique since the long coherent accumulation period increases the number of frequency search cells. But the non-coherent accumulation technique causes tile squaring loss, which is a dominant factor among the acquisition losses of assisted GPS dealing with weak GPS signals. This paper derives the squaring loss of the previous assisted-GPS acquisition method and proposes an assisted-GPS acquisition method for solving the problem of squaring loss in weak signal environment. In this paper, it is explained that the proposed assisted-GPS acquisition method prevents the squaring loss using a coupled coherent accumulation technique and the number of search cells of the proposed assisted-GPS acquisition method is much smaller than that of the previous assisted-GPS acquisition method. Finally, through the simulation by the GPS simulator, the acquisition success rate of the proposed assisted-GPS acquisition method is compared with that of the previous assisted-GPS acquisition method and the acquisition improvements are shown in weak signal environment.

  • In general, in order to reduce an initial cell searching time, W-CDMA systems adopt a three-step cell search scheme: slot synchronization, frame synchronization, and primary scrambling code identification. We consider the second step (frame synchronization), in which a coherent detection using P-SCH (primary synchronization channel) is possible. In this paper, we propose a new coherent detection scheme, where a first order recursive filter is used to enhance channel estimation performance. Computer simulation results indicate that the detection performance of the proposed scheme can be robust over large range of frequency offset.
