The purpose of this study is to find a way to improve digital textbooks for self-regulated learning by applying cognitive scaffolding designs to an elementary math digital textbook and examining the effectiveness of the system. Hence this study was conducted in two steps. First, a framework for scaffolding design was devised by examining the problems and difficulties students encounter when using a mathematics digital textbook. Second, after the digital textbook was revised by applying the scaffolding design frameworks, the effectiveness of the scaffolding framework was examined by comparing students' achievement levels in an experimental group and that of students in a control group. Seventy fifth-graders participated in this study. Students were divided into two groups: an experimental group and a control group. The students in the experimental group studied with the revised version of the digital textbook and the students in the control group studied with the original version of the digital textbook. The students received a pretest before the experiment. After the experiment, they took an achievement test and completed a usability questionnaire. The data were analyzed by ANCOVA with the SPSS Windows version. The results revealed that the students who used the revised program (to which design strategies for scaffolding were applied) showed higher levels of achievement than those who used the original version. In addition, students in the experimental group generally showed higher scores on the usability survey, which consisted of four sub-categories such as 'effectiveness', 'efficiency', 'satisfaction', and 'learnability'. There was a statistically significant effect on 'efficiency'. These results implied that scaffolding strategies were effective for mathematics learning through the use of an elementary digital textbook.

Improving spectrum utilization efficiency is a fundamental goal of dynamic spectrum access technology. The definition of spectrum holes determines how to detect and exploit them. Current definitions of spectrum holes are ineffective in exploiting spatial-temporal spectrum holes. In this paper, a novel definition of spectrum holes is proposed, in which throughput loss indicates the impact of secondary users on primary users. The definition specifies spectrum holes, unifies the impact of secondary users on primary users and is effective exploiting spatial-temporal spectrum holes. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations show that the new definition proposed in this paper significantly improves the spectrum utilization efficiency.
Another crucial issue is a providing secondary user(SU) with the its guaranteed quality of service(QoS) in cognitive radio systems, from the SU view to be allowed to opportunistically utilize the primary user(PU) spectrum on non-interfering. In this paper, we propose a bandwidth reallocation scheme for reducing SU dropping rate through renegotiation of requested channel numbers when available bandwidth is not enough for accepting the spectrum handoff SUs. We categorize SU calls into two types : the first priority and the second priority SU, and the first SU' service is supported by bandwidth reservation based on ARMA prediction model for PU arrivals, while the second SU's bandwidth demands for spectrum handoff is to be reallocated through their renegotiation. Simulation results show that our scheme can improve SU dropping rate and system resource utilization efficiency by bandwidth reallocation.

In this paper, we propose a sequence mining based manufacturing process using a decision model in cognitive factory. The proposed model is a method to increase the production efficiency by applying the sequence mining decision model in a small scale production process. The data appearing in the production process is composed of the input variables. And the output variable is composed the production rate and the defect rate per hour. We use the GSP algorithm and the REPTree algorithm to generate rules and models using the variables with high significance level through t-test. As a result, the defect rate are improved by 0.38% and the average hourly production rate was increased by 1.89. This has a meaning results for improving the production efficiency through data mining analysis in the small scale production of the cognitive factory.

This paper investigates the spectrum hole utilization of cooperative schemes for the two-way relaying model in order to improve the utilization efficiency of limited spectrum holes in cognitive radio networks with imperfect spectrum sensing. We propose two specific bidirectional secondary data transmission (BSDT) schemes with two-step and three-step two-way relaying models, i.e., two-BSDT and three-BSDT schemes, where the spectrum sensing and the secondary data transmission are jointly designed. In the proposed cooperative schemes, the best two-way relay channel between two secondary users is selected from a group of secondary users serving as cognitive relays and assists the bi-directional communication between the two secondary users without a direct link. The closed-form asymptotic expressions for outage probabilities of the two schemes are derived with a primary user protection constraint over Rayleigh fading channels. Based on the derived outage probabilities, the spectrum hole utilization is calculated to evaluate the percentage of spectrum holes used by the two secondary users for their successful information exchange without channel outage. Numerical results show that the spectrum hole utilization depends on the spectrum sensing overhead and the channel gain from a primary user to secondary users. Additionally, we compare the spectrum hole utilization of the two schemes as the varying of secondary signal to noise ratio, the number of cognitive relays, and symmetric and asymmetric channels.

In this paper, the game theory based power control for CDMA system is studied, which has attained intensive interest as a core artificial intelligent technology fur cognitive Radio and its efficiency is evaluated using performance metrics such as system throughput and fairness. Utility Function for joint user centric and network centric power control is defined and simulation results show that game theory based power control is far better than closed loop power control. The contribution of this raper is to formalize the game theory based power control toward the cognitive radio that recognizes and adapts to the radio communication environments.

In this paper, we investigate the power allocation for cognitive relay networks. Cognitive relay networks offer not only increasing spectral efficiency by spectrum sharing but also extending the coverage through the use of relays. For spectrum sharing, conventional works have assumed that secondary users know perfect channel information between the secondary and primary users. However, this channel information may be outdated at the secondary user because of the time-varying properties or feedback latency from the primary user. This causes the violation for interference constraint, and the secondary user cannot share the spectrum of the primary after all. To overcome this problem, we propose the power allocation scheme for the secondary user under the allowable primary user's outage probability constraint. Since the proposed power allocation scheme does not use the instantaneous channel information, the secondary users have lower feedback burden. In addition, the proposed scheme is also robust to the outdated channel environment.

Cognitive Radio, which is proposed to improve the efficiency of wireless communication systems is the system to share primary user's frequency bands with a secondary user. In this situation, a secondary user uses NC-OFDM (Non-contiguous Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) to transmit data effectively without interfering with the primary user's spectrum. However, NC-OFDM, in common with contiguous OFDM, degrades the performance of the system by generating high PAPR (Peak-to-Average Power Ratio). In this paper, firstly, we analyse PAPR corresponding to the distribution of subcarriers in NC-OFDM. Then the PAPR reductions that employ the PTS (Partial Transmit Sequence) and SLM (Selective Mapping) are evaluated. Finally, the computational complexities of the PTS and SLM adopting pruned-FFT are compared with conventional PTS and SLM. Further, it is shown that the NC-OFDM with pruned-FFT is more efficient than the contiguous OFDM in terms of computational complexity and PAPR reduction performance.

Cognitive radio is considered as a promising solution to scarce spectrum problem. The primary object of cognitive radio is to increase spectral efficiency, while causing limited interference to primary users who are using the spectrum. Hence, an essential part of cognitive radio systems is spectrum sensing which determines whether a particular spectrum is occupied or not by a primary user at a particular time. However, sensing decision of each individual secondary user alone may not be reliable enough due to shadowing and multipath fading of wireless channels. The so called hidden terminal problem makes the problem even worse, possibly yielding undesired interference to the primary users. Recently, cooperative spectrum sensing is emerging as a remedy to these problems of individual sensing. Cooperative sensing allows a group of secondary users to share local sensing information to extract a global decision with high fidelity. In this paper, we investigate a cooperative spectrum sensing algorithm based on hard decisions of local sensing outcomes. Specifically, we propose an effective scheme for combining local decisions by introducing weighting factors that reflect reliability of the corresponding secondary user. Through computer simulations, the performance of the proposed combining scheme is compared with that of the conventional scheme without weighting factors in various environments.

In this paper, we investigate the cognitive and cooperative communication scheme to improve the spectral efficiency in multiuser OFDMA systems using wireless relays. First, we propose the frame structure in which the efficient frequency reuse scheme with the cognitive technique is performed to increase the system throughput. And in the case where the THP (Tomlinson-Harashima preceding) is used for the elimination of interference from the relay, we derive the effective signal to noise ratio of the link largely affected by the channel quantization error. From the system level simulation results, it is shown that the proposed cognitive and cooperative communication scheme increases the overall system performance including the feedback overhead.
