Structural and magnetic properties of Co-Cr-Mo films were investigated in connection with sputtering conditions. Films were prepared using a convention RF sputtering system. X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were employed to investigate structure properties. Vibrating sample magnetometry was used for coercivity and saturation magnetization measurements. Co-Cr-Mo films displayed reasonable values of perpendicular coercivity and saturation magnetization for perpendicular recording media and showed good perpendicular orientation of the hcp c-axis to the film surface. Perpendicular coercivity was strongly dependent upon substrate technique showed better c-axis orientation than hose using the stationary substrate. Co-Cr-Mo films of 2.9 at. % Mo content showed maximum perpendicular coercivity and saturation magnetization. The films deposited at lower Ar pressure showed good magnetic properties. There was no explicit relationship between the columnar structure and c-axis orientation. Co-Cr-Mo films was found to have suitable structural and magnetic properties for perpendicular recording media.
Sputtering conditions and various underlayer such as Al, Cu, Ni, Cr, Ag, Mg, Fe, Co, Pd, Au, Pt, Mo and Hf were investigated for coercivity enhancement of 20 nm Ti/CoCrPt thin films in order to increase the coercivity of the films thinner than 20 nm. Among them, Ag and Mg were effective to increase the coercivity. Particularly 2 nm Ag was very effective to increase the coercivity and nucleation field as well as to reduce ${\alpha}$ value in CoCrPt thin film such that the coercivity of 2 nm Ag/18 nm Ti/10 nm CoCrPt film was 2200 Oe. However, it seemed that other coercivity enhancement mechanism operated in CoCrPt films because Ti (002) preferred texture was not developed with Ag underlayer contrary to a general expectation. And the coercivity and nucleation field were decreased when glass substrate with rougher surface was used.
A coercivity of barium ferrite (BaM) tape was found to be higher than the coercivity of BaM powder, This difference is in the range of 50 Oe to 600 Oe, which depends on substituted cations. physical properties of powder, and preparation conditions of the tape. The coercivity difference is attributed to both particle stacking and adsorption of organic solvent on particle surface. Regardless of substituted cations, the coercivity of longitudinally oriented BaFe tape was higher than that of BaM powder by a range of 100 Oe to 120 Oe, which is caused by particle stacking' During the active adsorption process on preparation of magnetic paint, where MEK (methyl ethyl ketone), TOL (toluene) and CHO (cyclohexanone) were used, chemisorption of solvents on the surface of substituted BaFe particle occurred to form polymeric compounds surrounding the particle. An increase in coercivity, caused by the solvent adsorption, was significant for Co-substutited BaM tape. Among these solvents CHO was the most effective one in increasing the coercivity of the Co-Ti substituted BaM tape.

The internal stress and magnetic properties (coercivity and squareness) of Ni-Fe nano thin film synthesized by electrodeposition method were studied as a function of acidic chloride bath conditions (composition and temperature) and current density. Fe deposition patterns were different depending on the temperature of the solution, the stress of film decreased with increasing the solution temperature, and the depending on the amount of Fe deposition showed a parabolic shape. The grain size of film was inversely proportional to stress of thin film. The internal stress of thin film and magnetic properties were deeply relevant, and the stress of thin film had a relationship with bath conditions and grain size of the thin film surface.

We prepared Co-Cr thin film for perpendicular magnetic recording media with facing targets sputtering system(FTS system) which can deposit a high quality thin film in plasma-free state and wide range of working pressure. The effect of sputtering conditions(argon gas pressure and substrate temperature) on the magnetic and the crystallographic characteristic of Co-Cr thin film was investigated. And the variation of perpendicular coercivity with the variation of film thickness was studied. As a result we obtained the high perpendicular coercivity of 1900Oe and the good dispersion angle of c-axis($\Delta$$\theta$$_{50}$) of 5$^{\circ}$on the film thickness of 100nm for the promising recording layer of perpendicular magnetic recording media.c recording media.a.
Effect of deposition conditions on the magnetic properties of SmCo/Cr prepared by a RF magnetron sputtering method was studied. We obtained the maximum coercivity of 3.2 kOe in the sample of Cr(50 nm)/SmCo(40 nm, 50W, 20 mT)/Cr(150 nm, 100 W, 30 mT). The coercivity of the SmCo/Cr depends largely on the roughness of the Cr underlayer and the composition of SmCo. The roughness of the Cr underlayer increased with increasing the Ar pressure and thickness, and promoted the isolation of SmCo grains which resulted in an enhanced coercivity. The composition of the SmCo was changed with RF power and Ar pressure due to the mass difference between Sm and Co and the resputtering phenomena. The maximum coercivity was obtained in the composition of about 20 at.% Sm. The mechanism of magnetization reversal of the present SmCo films changed from domain wall motion to domain rotation as the RF power and the Ar pressure increase. This was though to be due to the defects, such as the roughness of Cr surface, porous column boundaries etc., which inhibit domain wall movement.
FeN thin films for inductive recording heads were sputter deposited using RF diode sputtering mehtod from a pure iron target onto 7059 glass substrates, and their magnetic properties were measured. The magnetic properties were greatly affected by film thickness, gas pressure, sputter power and flow ratio of $N_{2}$ to Ar. Single layer FeN films with their thickness varied from $1,000\;{\AA}$ to $6,000\;{\AA}$ were doposited. 800 W sputter power, 3 mT gas pressure, $N_{2}$ to Ar flow ratio of 6.6 : 100 were the sputtering conditions. Up to 7 layers of FeN films having total thickness of $6,000\;{\AA}$ were deposited using $SiO_{2}$ of $30\;{\AA}$ thickness as intermediate layers and their coercivity and saturation magnetization were measured. The sputtering conditions were the same as those in the single layer films. Easy axis coercivity of the single layer FeN films gradually decreased as their thickness was increased, but for the films with their thicknesses above $3,000\;{\AA}$, the coercivity changed very little. As the number of the FeN layers were increased, the coercivity decreased We estimated the grain size of FeN films from the FWHM (Full Width at Half Maximum) of X-ray diffraction peaks. The grain size steadily decreased from about $200\;{\AA}$ to $120\;{\AA}$ as the number of layers were increased. Minimum hard axis coercivity of 0.4 Oe was obtained when the number of layers was four. Maximum relative permeability was 2,900 when the number of layers was three. The cut off frequeocy of the multilayer films were above 100 MHz.

Crystallographic and magnetic characteristics of CoCr-based magnetic thin film for perpendicular magnetic recording media were influenced on preparing conditions. In these, there is that substrate temperature was parameter that increases perpendicular coercivity of CoCrTa magnetic layer using recording layer. While preparation of CoCr-based doublelayer, by optimizing substrate temperature, we expect to increase perpendicular anisotropy of CoCr magnetic layer and prepare ferromagnetic recording layer with a good quality by epitaxial growth. CoCrTa/Si doublelayer showed a good dispersion angle of c-axis orientation $\Delta$$\theta$$_{50}$ caused by inserting amorphous Si underlayer which prepared at underlayer substrate temperature 250C. Perpendicular coercivity was constant, in-plane coercivity was controlled a low value about 2000e. This result implied that Si underlayer could restrain growth of initial layer of CoCrTa thin film, which showed bad magnetic properties effectively without participating magnetization patterns of magnetic layer. In case of CoCrTa/Si that prepared with ultra thin underlayer, crystalline orientation of CoCrTa was improved rather underlayer thickness 1nm, it was expected that amorphous Si layer played a important role in not only underlayer but also seed layer.t also seed layer.r.
Co/Pd and Co/Pt multilayered thin films for perpendicular magnetic recording media were fabricated by sput¬tering method and the effects of the sputtering pressure during the formation of Pd or Pt underlayers on the magnetization behavior and coercivity of the multilayers were investigated. It was found that the coercivity of Co/Pd multilayers was strongly dependent on the sputtering pressure of underlayer and could be enhanced to a large extent merely by increasing the sputtering pressure of underlayer, while in case of Co/Pt films, the degree of coercivity enhancement by controlling the sputtering pressure of underlayer was almost negligible. Coercivity variation of Co/Pd and Co/Pt multilayers with the underlayer material and deposition pressure of underlayer could be well explained in terms of the interface roughness of multilayer films induced by underlayer topology, which could also be correlated to the change of perpendicular anisotropy energy and magnetic reversal feature with the sputtering pressure of underlayer. Kerr rotation angle was hardly affected by the preparation conditions of underlayers.
