  • Effects of B addition and heat treatment on the magnetic and magnetostrictive properties of amorphous SmFe$_2$ thin films are investigated. A significant improvement in the magnetostrictive properties at low magnetic fields is observed with the addition of B. This improvement, however, is achieved at a heavy cost of intrinsic properties such as saturation magnetostriction. For example, at a magnetic field of 30 Oe, magnetostriction of a thin film with a B content of 9.9 at.% is increased from 190 to 333 ppm, but saturation magnetostriction is decreased by more than 50 %. This result is in accord with the deterioration (reduction) of saturation magnetization and the improvement (reduction) of coercive force at this B content. The magnetostrictive properties are also improved by annealing and optimum annealing temperature is found to be in the range 300-400 $^{\circ}C$. The main reason for the improvement is mainly considered to be due to the reduction of coercive force caused by stress relief, not due to the ultrafine SmFe$_2$ precipitates which were originally expected to form by annealing.

  • Since Nd-Fe-B magnet was first synthesized in 1983, many new applications have emerged in the past two decades. With regard to motor market, it will expand because of strong energy saving requirements from the automobile and electric application markets. Especially, permanent magnet motors for hybrid and electric vehicles are drawing great attention and the usage of Nd-Fe-B magnets will increase all the more hereafter. There is, however, a serious problem as motors in such eco-friendly cars are said to operate in high temperatures of about $200^{\circ}C$. Nd-Fe-B magnet has a drawback of dramatically decreasing coercive force with the rise of temperature. In order to improve this aspect. the best way is to add dysprosium (Dy) into the magnet. So, Dy has become an essential element for Nd-Fe-B high-performance magnet as it helps to maintain coercive force even at high temperatures. On the other hand, the rare earth resources in the earth crust are eccentrically-located and its majority is produced in China. There is a need to reduce its usage as, especially compared to light rare earth elements as neodymium (Nd) and samarium (Sm), heavy rare earth elements including Dy are unevenly distributed to a dramatic degree, their output low, and their prices are about 10 times that of Nd. The present article includes a summary of the trend in research and development of motors and permanent magnets to solve rare-earth resources problem.

  • We have prepared PP/Ba-ferrite composite fabrics by a melt-blown spinning method and investigated the relationship between the properties of PP/Ba-ferrite composite fabrics and melt-blown processing factors. A PP composite containing Ba-ferrite as a magnetic particulate filler was prepared in the form of pellet from PP resin and Ba-ferrite powder by melt compounding using a single extruder. Screw turning force (rpm), DCD (die-to-collector distance), and Ba-ferrite content were changed. We measured diameters of fiber, mechanical, thermal, and magnetic properties for the composited PP fabrics. The elongation was increased and a fiber diameter and tensile strength were decreased as the spinning distance increased or screw turning force decreased. The crystallinity was increased with increasing spinning distance according to XRD. It was assumed that the orientation of crystalline domain in the neat PP without ferrite was increased by drawing in mechanical direction, however, the orientation in the PP composite was decreased according to XRD analysis. We measured a magnetic property of PP nonwoven fabric containing Ba-ferrite powder. A coercive force, maximum magnetization, and residual magnetization are reduced with the spinning distance. According to the result of TGA measurement, the heat resistance was increased with the Ba-ferrite powder content and with decreasing the spinning distance.

  • The magnetic and magnetostrictive properties of melt-spun ribbons of the alloys (R0.33Fe0.67)1-xBx (R=Tb0.3Dy0.7 and 0$\leq$x$\leq$0.06) are ivestigated as a function of wheel speed during melt-quenching. The saturation magnetiation of the alloys with a crystalline phase ranges from 70 to 80 emu/g and does not vary substantially with the B content. The saturation magnetization of an amorphous phase, which is formed at the condition of thigh wheel speed and high B content, is reduced significantly, however. The coercive force is minimum at x= 0.02 and increases monotonously with the further increase of B content when the microstructure mainly consists of a crystalline phase, but again it is reduced significantly by the formation of an amorphous phase. The low field sensitivity of magnetostriction with magnetic field is found to be good for the alloys with x$\leq$0.04 over a wide range of wheel speed. This magnetostrictive behavior is in contrast with that observed previously for Dy-Fe and Tb-Fe based alloys and is thought to be due to low intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the compound.

  • $Mg_xNi_yZn_{1-x-y}Fe_2O_4$ ferrite powders were prepared by self-propagating high temperature synthesis followed by classifying with an ultrasonic wet-magnetic separation unit to get high pure nano-sized particles. The $Mg_xNi_yZn_{1-x-y}Fe_2O_4$ ferrites were well formed by using several powders like iron, nickel oxide, zinc oxide and magnesium oxide at 0.1 MPa of oxygen pressure. The ultrasonic wet-magnetic separation of pre-mechanical milled ferrite powders resulted in producing the powders with average size of 800 nm. The addition of a surfactant during the wet-magnetic separation process improved productivity more than twice. The coercive force, maximum magnetization and residual magnetization of the $Mg_xNi_yZn_{1-x-y}Fe_2O_4$ nano-powders with 800 nm size were 3651 A/m, $53.92Am^2/kg$ and $4.0Am^2/kg$, respectively.

  • Magnetic and conducting aniline sulfide resin cross-linked (ASC-Fe3O4) nanocomposite has been prepared in the presence of aniline sulfide resin (ASR), aniline, $Fe_3O_4$ coated by polyethylene glycol (PEG) and initiator. The magnetic properties of the resulting composites showed ferromagnetic behavior, such as high-saturated magnetization (Ms= 41 emu/g), and coercive force (Hc=1.5 Oe). The saturated magnetization was increased by increasing of $Fe_3O_4$ content and decreased by increasing aniline ratio. The transmission electron micrograph (TEM) and X-ray diffraction proved that nanometer-sized about 20-30 nm $Fe_3O_4$ in the composite. The average size of ASC-$Fe_3O_4$ nanocomposite with core-shell structure was about 50-60 nm, and polydisperse. This approach may also be extended to the synthesis and modification of other polymers. Electrical conductivity of aniline sulfide resin cross-linked (ASC) nanocomposite has been studied by four-point probe method and produced $3.3{\times}10^{-4}S/cm$ conductivity for it. The conductivity of the composites at room temperature depended on the $Fe_3O_4$, aniline ratio and doping degree. The thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) results showed that this resin is thermal resistance near of $500^{\circ}C$. So, It can be used for resistance thermal coating for military applications. $Fe_3O_4$-PASC nanocomposite has been flexible structure with electrical and magnetic properties.

  • As a result of the recent miniaturization and enhancement in the performance of thin film inductors and thin film transformers, there are increased demands for the thin films with a high magnetic permeability in the high frequency range, a high saturation magnetization, a high electrical resistivity, and a low coercive force. In order to improve high frequency properties, we will investigate anisotropy field by shape and size of pattern. The Fe-Al-O thin films of 16mm diameter and 1$\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness were deposited on Si wafer, using RE magnetron reactive sputtering technique with the mixture of argon and oxygen gases. The fabricating conditions are obtained in the working partial pressure of 2m Torr, O$_2$ partial Pressure of 5%, Input power of 400w, and Al pellets on an Fe disk with purity of 99.9%. For continuous thin film is the 4Ms of 19.4kG, H$\sub$c/ of 0.6Oe, H$\sub$k/ of 6.0Oe and effective permeability of 2500 up to 100MHz. In this work, we expect to enhanced effect of magnetic anisotropy on patterned of Fe-Al-O thin films.

  • In this study the (Alnico, Sm-Co) bonded magnets were fabricated by mixing the Sm-Co added alnico alloy powders with epoxy resin and binder, appropriately. Also, the hybrid ring magnets of (Alnico, Sm-Co)/Sr-ferrite were fabricated by coupling the Sr-ferrite composite layer with an (Alnico, Sm-Co) magnet. The magnetic properties of (Alnico, Sm-Co) ring magnets were varied with the amount of Sm-Co powders. The addition of Sm-Co powders increased a remanent induction($B_r$) and coercive force($_BH_C$), while decreasing a surface flux density and repulsive distance. The surface flux density and repulsive distance for the (Alnico, Sm-Co) ring magnet increased with a magnetizing voltage up to about 160 V and reached an apparent saturation point. Also, the measurements of temperature and moisture characteristics showed that the surface flux densities of N-S poles and repulsive distance decreased a little within 4% after 10 days passed.

  • The c-axis orientation plays a very important role in controlling the main parameters of the perpendicular magnetic recording media, such as perepndicular magnetic anisotropy field $H_{K{\bot}}$, the ratio of coercive force $H_{C{\bot}}/H_{C//}$, the recording density $D_{50}$, and the dispersion of the c-axis orientation $\Delta\theta_{50}$, which is quite important for the performance as perpendicular recording media, as well as the magnetic properties of the film. In this study, the essential process requirement for preparing the Co-Cr films with the superior c-axis orientation, the dependence of $\Delta\theta_{50}$ and the magnetic properties on the film thickness $\delta$, and the effect of underlayer on the dispersion of c-axis orientation have been investigated for both the FTS and DCM system.

  • Ba-ferrite ($BaFe_{12}O_{19}$) nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical coprecipitation method in an aqueous solution. The particle size and the crystallization temperature of the Ba-ferrite nanoparticles were controlled varying the precipitation temperature. The precipitate that was prepared at $0^{\circ}C$ showed the crystal structure of Ba-ferrite in X-ray diffraction when it was calcined at the temperature above $580^{\circ}C$, whereas what was prepared at $50^{\circ}C$ showed the crystallinity when it was calcined at the temperature higher than about $700^{\circ}C$. The particle sizes of the synthesized Ba-ferrite were in a range of about 20-30 nm when it was prepared by being precipitated at $0^{\circ}C$ and calcined at $650^{\circ}C$. When the precipitation temperature increased, the particle size also increased even at the same calcination temperature. The magnetic properties of the Ba-ferrite nanoparticles were also controlled by the synthetic condition of precipitation and calcination temperature. The coercive force could be appreciably lowered without a loss of saturation magnetization when the Ba-ferrite nanoparticles were prepared by precipitation and calcination both at low temperatures.
