  • The absorption power of a surface depends on the surface irregularity which has been known as an important factor in determining scattering coefficient. This study investigates the effect of increase in surface area on the absorption and scattering coefficients of a diffuse surface. The surface irregularity or surface pattern can be compared to the wavelengths and the random-incidence scattering coefficient of surface is measured by ISO 17497-1. The scattering coefficients of increasing the surface area in linear pattern of v-cut groove on rubber plate were measured in 1:10 scale model reverberation chamber. It is found that the scattering and absorption coefficients increase with increasing surface area. At 60% of increased surface area the spacing between the hemisphere diffuser and the v-cut groove acts similar with results of absorption coefficient. The results show that absorption coefficient depends on surface area and the spacing where as scattering coefficient depends on surface area and texture.

  • A major problem with high-mast light poles is the effects that wind vortex shedding can have on the pole itself because of the lock-in phenomenon. It is desired that the coefficients in the AASHTO Standard Specifications ($5^{th}$ edition) for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaries, and Traffic Signals be analyzed and refined. This is for the belief that the span of the shapes of poles for which the coefficients are used is much too broad and a specific coefficient for each different shape is desired. The primary objective of this study is to develop wind vortex shedding coefficient for a multisided shape. To do that, an octagonal shape was used as the main focus since octagonal cross sectioned high-mast light poles are one of the most common shapes in service. For the needed data, many wind parameters, such as the static drag coefficient, the slope of aerodynamic lift coefficient, Strouhal number, the lock-in range of wind velocities producing vibrations, and variation of amplitude of vortex-induced vibration with Scruton number are needed. From wind tunnel experiments, aerodynamic parameters were obtained for an octagonal shape structure. Even though aerodynamic coefficients are known from past test results, they need to be refined by conducting further wind tunnel tests.

  • A new empirical formula for instantaneous heat transfer coefficients was determined. The determination of this formula is in need for prediction of instantaneous value of heat transfer coefficients to analyze in more detail the time variation of heat transfer rate from gas to wall in combustion chamber of a spark ignition engine. As the result, following formula was determined. h=687 $p^{0.75}$ $U^{0.75}$ $D^{0.25}$ - $T^{-0.465}$ U(.theta.)=O.494 $V_{p}$ +0.73*10$^{6}$ (1.35 p dV/d.theta.+V dp/d.theta.) Using this empirical formula, the instantaneous heat transfer coefficients of gas in the combustion chamber of spark ignition engine was predicted and compared with experimental values.

  • A stability theory of a damped cantilever column under sub-tangential follower forces is first summarized based on the stability map. It is then demonstrated that internal and external damping can be exactly transformed to Rayleigh damping so that the damping coefficients can be effectively determined using proportional damping. Particularly a parametric study with variation of damping coefficients is performed in association with flutter loads of Beck's column and it is shown that two damping coefficients can be correctly estimated for real systems under the assumption of Rayleigh damping. Finally a frequency equation of a cantilever beam subjected to both a sub-tangentially follower force and two kinds of damping forces is presented in the closed-form and its stability maps are constructed and compared with FE solutions in the practical range of damping coefficients.

  • We studied the dielectric characteristics of low-k SiOCH thin films by Ellipsometry. The SiOCH thin films were prepared by deposition of BTMSM precursors on p-Si wafer by CCP-PECVD method. The nano-porous structural organic/inorganic hybrid-type of SiOCH thin films correlated directly to the formation of low dielectrics close to pore(k=1). The structural groups including highly dense pores in SiOCH thin films originated the anisotropic geometry type of network structure directing to complex refractive characteristics of SiOCH single layer on the p-Si wafer. The linearly polarized beam of Xe-ramp in the range from 190 nm to 2100 nm introduced to the surface of SiOCH thin film, and the reflected beam was Elliptically polarized by complex refractive coefficients of SiOCH dipole groups. The amplitude variation $\Psi$ and phase variation $\Delta$ of the relative reflective coefficients between perpendicular and parallel components to the incident plane were measured by Ellipsometry. The complex optical constants n and k as well as the dielectric constant and thickness of SiOCH thin films were driven by the measured value of $\Psi$ and $\Delta$.

  • Pressure measurements on static and autorotating flat plates have been recently reported by Lin et al. (2006), Holmes, et al. (2006), and Richards, et al. (2008), amongst others. In general, the variation of the normal force with respect to the angle of attack appears to stall in the mid attack angle range with a large scale separation in the wake. To date however, no surface pressures have been measured on auto-rotating plates that are typical of a certain class of debris. This paper presents the results of an experiment to measure the aerodynamic forces on a flat plate held stationary at different angles to the flow and allowing the plate to auto-rotate. The forces were determined through the measurement of differential pressures on either side of the plate with internally mounted pressure transducers and data logging systems. Results are presented for surface pressure distributions and overall integrated forces and moments on the plates in coefficient form. Computed static force coefficients show the stall effect at the mid range angle of attack and some variation for different Reynolds numbers. Normal forces determined from autorotational experiments are higher than the static values at most pitch angles over a cycle. The resulting moment coefficient does not compare well with current analytical formulations which suggest the existence of a flow mechanism that cannot be completely described through static tests.

  • The reflection coefficients of monochromatic waves propagating over a shelf with varying dimensions are theoretically calculated. The diffraction of waves by an abrupt depth change is formulated by the eigenfunction expansion method. Not only propagating mode but also evanescent modes are considered in formulation. The role of evanescent modes in reflection coefficients is investigated in detail. Water waves are obliquely as well as normally incident to the region. The obtained reflection coefficients are verified by checking conservation of wave energy.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the techniques or analyzing tobacco smoke by statistical treatment method for the analytical data through Asia Collaborative Study V. In addition to five smoke components analysis, consisting of TPM, water, nicotine, NFDPM, and puff count of four cigarettes samples, statistical parameters such as mean, standard deviation, box-and-whisker plots, h plots, k plots, regression coefficients, reproducibility (R), and repeatability (r) were also calculated. Analysis of water content of cigarette smoke was the most difficult task, whereas puff count analysis was the easiest as well recognized by all laboratories. Analysis of nicotine and puff count accounted for both the lowest and the highest variation among four parameters. The water coefficients indicated more randomness or variation in the slops. The NFDPM data exhibited both types of deviations from linearity. Water content of sample D indicated the highest difference between two single results and between two interlaboratory test results. As a whole, KGTRI ranked higher in the analytical techniques for statistical evaluation of results when compared with the practices of 28 other laboratories.

  • Background: This study purposed to analyze the relationship between regional obesity rates and regional variables. Methods: Data was collected from the Korean Statistical Information Service (KOSIS) and Community Health Survey in 2012. The units of analysis were administrative districts such as city, county, and district. The dependent variable was the age-sex adjusted regional obesity rates. The independent variables were selected to represent four aspects of regions: health behaviour factor, psychological factor, socio-economic factor, and physical environment factor. Along with the traditional ordinary least square (OLS) regression analysis model, this study applied geographically weighted regression (GWR) analysis to calculate the regression coefficients for each region. Results: The OLS results showed that there were significant differences in regional obesity rates in high-risk drinking, walking, depression, and financial independence. The GWR results showed that the size of regression coefficients in independent variables was differed by regions. Conclusion: Our results can help in providing useful information for health policy makers. Regional characteristics should be considered when allocating health resources and developing health-related programs.

  • The new definition of calibration coefficients is proposed for a five-hole Pitot tube. Two-angle chart calibration other than one-angle variation is considered to improve the accuracy in the measurement of the three-dimensional velocity fields. Several sets of correlation coefficients are introduced for different shapes of the probe tip. The calibration method with one-angle variation is compared with the new two-angle chart calibration method and the improvement of the present method is clearly shown.
