Interface friction in blanking dies, cold forging and extrusion of aluminum alloys is a major cause of inefficient process. This paper describes an investigation of femtosecond laser texturing for reduction of interface friction on sliding surfaces in forming process. Femtosecond direct writing technology was used to fabricate a laser micro-machined die and to create microgroove patterns with varying size and density on metal forming dies. A systematic approach to find the optimum parameters and computer simulation comparison of friction coefficients are provided to study the relation of friction coefficients and die profiles. In metal forming tests, the effectiveness of various laser-machined patterns for enhancing interface lubrication is determined.
Brake pads are a component of disc brake system of automobile and consist of steel backing plates and friction material facing the disk brake rotor. Due to the repeated sliding forces and torque in vehicle braking, friction performance of brake pads are ensured. Futhermore, the brake pad is one of major tuning components in aftermarket, mechanical characteristics of the brake pad are necessary to evaluate for establishing the certification standards of tuning components. This study had performed the five specimen tests for friction coefficients and wear loss rates according to the SAE test specification. Using the instrumented indentation method, yield strength and tensile strength were measured. Friction coefficients, 0.386 - 0.489, and wear loss rates, 1.0% - 3.7% are obtained. The range of yield strength and tensile strength are 21.4 MPa - 105.3 MPa and 39.5 MPa - 176.4 MPa respectively.
A moving mass on a skewed linear guideway model to analyze the friction-induced stick-slip behavior of ball-screw-driven slides is proposed. To describe the friction force, a friction coefficient function is modelled as a third-order polynomial of the relative velocity between the slide mass and a guideway. A nonlinear differential equation of motion is derived and an approximate solution is obtained using a perturbation method for the amplitudes and base frequencies of both pure-slip and stick-slip oscillations. The results are presented with time responses, phase plots, and amplitude plots, which are compared adequately with those obtained by Runge Kutta 4th-order numerical integration, as long as the difference between the static and kinematic friction coefficients is small. However, errors in the results by the approximate solution increase and are not negligible if the difference between the friction coefficients exceeds approximately 40% of the static friction coefficient.
This paper presents an experiment of the characteristics of lubricating oils for refrigerating and air conditioning. We investgate influences of lubricating oils and additives on friction and wear by reciprocating type and pendulum type friction testers. The result shows that polyolesters have excellent friction characteristics and poor effect of additives. In contrast, polyvinylethers gave higher coefficient of friction, low wear amount and good effect of additives. We can see good relationship between the coefficients of friction in recipricating type and pendulum type friction testers.
Using a test apparatus developed Lrt the laboratory, frictional characteristics of natural rubbers have been analyzed by experimental study. Friction coefficient has been calculated from the measured normal force and friction force under various speeds, loads, and temperatures. The relations between the various operating conditions and friction coefficients have been verified. Especially, drag friction due to the visco-elastic behavior of the rubber has been observed in this analysis.
The heat transfer and friction factor characteristics of turbulent flows in three stationary channels have been investigated experimentally to check out the effect of divergence ratio. These are a constant cross-sectional channel and two diverging channels with ratio of divergence(Dho/Dhi) of 1.16 and 1.49. The measurement was conducted within the range of Reynolds numbers from 15,000 to 89,000 and the dimension of uniform cross-sectional test section is $100mm{\times}100mm$ at the cross section and 1,000 mm in length. The measurements of heat transfer coefficients and friction factors in the uniform channels were conducted as a reference. Because of the streamwise flow deceleration, the heat transfer and friction factor characteristics in the diverging channel were quite different from those of the constant cross-sectional channel. The effective friction factors and convective heat transfer coefficients increased with increasing the ratio of divergence of the channel.
This study estimated experimentally the loss distribution caused by magnetic friction in magnetic parts of a superconductor flywheel energy storage system (SFES) to obtain information for the design of high efficiency SFES. Through the spin down experiment using the manufactured vertical shaft type SFES with a journal type superconductor magnetic bearing (SMB), the coefficients of friction by the SMB, the stator core of permanent magnet synchronous motor/generator (PMSM/G), and the leakage flux of the metal parts were calculated. The coefficients of friction by the stator core of PMSM/G in case of using Si-steel and an amorphous core were calculated. The energy loss by magnetic friction in the stator core of PMSM/G was much larger than that in the other parts. The level of friction loss could be reduced dramatically using an amorphous core. Energy loss by the leakage magnetic field was small. On the other hand, the energy loss could be increased under other conditions according to the type of metal nearby the leakage magnetic fields. In manufactured SFES, the rotational loss by the amorphous core was approximately 2 times the loss of the superconductor and leakage. Moreover, the rotational loss by the Si-steel core is approximately 3~3.5 times the loss of superconductor and leakage.

Laser surface texturing (LST), a surface engineering modification, has been considered as one of the new processes used to improve tribological characteristics of materials by creating artificially patterned microstructure on the contact surface of mechanical components. In LST technology, the laser is optimized to obtain or manufacture the dimples with maximum precision. The micro-dimples reduce the coefficients of friction and also improve the wear resistance of materials. This study investigates the effect of dimple density is investigated. For this purpose, a ball-on-disc type tester is used with AISI 52100 bearing steel as the test material. Discs are textured with a 5% and 10% dimple density. Experimental work is performed with normal loads of 5 N, 10 N, and 15 N under a fixed speed of 150 rpm at room temperature. The effect of the textured surface is compared to that of the untextured one. Experimental results show that the textured surface yields lower friction coefficients compared to those of untextured surfaces. Specifically, the 10% dimple density textured surface shows better friction reduction behavior than the 5% dimple density textured sample, and has an 18% improvement in friction reduction compared with the untextured samples. Microscopic observation using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) shows that the major friction mechanisms of the AISI 52100 bearing steel are adhesion, plastic deformation, and ploughing.
Ice induced abrasion is known as a critical problem in concrete gravity based offshore structures, which are mainly used in the arctic regions. Although many researches on ice abrasion have been conducted for the last several decades, there still are some difficulties in designing concrete gravity based offshore structures against abrasion problem because there is no standardized method yet due to the uncertain physics involved in. This paper presents an experimental study for the evaluation of concrete abrasion characteristics due to ice friction on concrete surface. For the test, a testing machine capable of abrasion and friction was designed and produced, and standardized procedure was proposed to produce ice specimen used for abrasion test. For the experiment, compressive strength of the ice specimen were explored through a static compression test. Then the friction test between ice specimen and concrete surface was performed and friction coefficients were derived using measured vertical and horizontal forces. Dependency of friction coefficients on some test parameters were studied and discussed as well.
The frictional behaviors of Cermets/Cr-Ceramics and Cu-Al coatings of piston ring were investigated. Friction tests were carried out by pin-on-disk test and materials properties of coating layer were analyzed by nano indentation tester. The effect of surface roughness of cylinder liner on the friction coefficient was analyzed. This study provided tribological data of hard and soft piston ring coatings against cylinder liner. The surface roughness does exert an influence on the average friction coefficient, with smoother surfaces generally yielding lower friction coefficients. In case of hard-coating, the scratch depth, width and pile-up height had close relationship with hardness. So the scratch width, depth and pile-up height increases with decreasing friction coefficient. But in case of soft-coating, the friction coefficients are strongly dependent on the morphological characteristics such as, scratch depth, width, pile-up height and elastic modulus.
