  • Rateless codes have been shown to be able to provide greater flexibility and efficiency than fixed-rate codes for multicast applications. In the following, we optimize rateless codes for unequal error protection (UEP) for multimedia multicasting to a set of heterogeneous users. The proposed designs have the objectives of providing either guaranteed or best-effort quality of service (QoS). A randomly interleaved rateless encoder is proposed whereby users only need to decode symbols up to their own QoS level. The proposed coder is optimized based on measured transmission properties of standardized raptor codes over wireless channels. It is shown that a guaranteed QoS problem formulation can be transformed into a convex optimization problem, yielding a globally optimal solution. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed optimized random interleaved UEP rateless coder's performance compares favorably with that of other recently proposed UEP rateless codes.

  • Fuzzy logic and neural networks are complemetary technologies in the design of intelligent system. Fuzzy neural network(FNN) as an auto-tuning method is actually known to an excellent method for the adjustment of the fuzzy rule. However, this has a weak point, because the convergence to the optimum depends on the initial condition. In this paper we develop a coding format to determine a FNN model by chromosome in GA and present systematic approach to identify the parameters and structure of FNN. The proposed hybrid tuning method realizes to construct minimal and optimal structure of the fuzzy mode simultaneously and automatically. This paper shows effectiveness of the tuning system by simulations compared with conventional methods.

  • A fast converging coding algorithm that adaptively selects the modes of macroblocks is introduced. For a given frame, the optimal modes are selected based on the decision curves that minimize the overall distortion at a given bit rate. The method proposed in this paper is different from the conventional ones in that it does not manipulate the quantizer to meet the target bit rate but it satisfies the target bit rate by finding optimal modes of macroblocks which result consistent visual quality. Lagrange multiplier of the unconstrained cost function is controlled to trigger decision curves to generate appropriate modes to meet bit rate and the curve is obtained by utilizing simulated annealing optimization technique. The algorithm is implemented within H.261 video codec and simulation results demonstrate superior visual quality.

  • Discrete cosine Transform (DCT) is most popular block transform coding in lossy mode. DCT is close to statistically optimal transform - the Karhunen Loeve transform. In this paper, a module for still image encoder is implemented with TMS320C80 based on JPEG, which are international standards for image compression. Th still image encoder consists of three parts- a transformer, a vector quantizer and an entropy encoder.

  • This paper introduces the research progress on the artificial brain in the Telerobotics and Control Laboratory at KAIST. This series of studies is based on the assumption that it will be possible to develop an artificial intelligence by copying the mechanisms of the animal brain. Two important brain mechanisms are considered: spike-timing dependent plasticity and dopaminergic plasticity. Each mechanism is implemented in two coding paradigms: spike-codes and rate-codes. Spike-timing dependent plasticity is essential for self-organization in the brain. Dopamine neurons deliver reward signals and modify the synaptic efficacies in order to maximize the predicted reward. This paper addresses how artificial intelligence can emerge by the synergy between self-organization and reinforcement learning. For implementation issues, the rate codes of the brain mechanisms are developed to calculate the neuron dynamics efficiently.

  • Jacket transforms are a class of transforms which are simple to calculate, easily inverted and are size-flexible. Previously reported jacket transforms were generalizations of the well-known Walsh-Hadamard transform (WHT) and the center-weighted Hadamard transform (CWHT). In this paper we present a new class of jacket transform not derived from either the WHT or the CWHT. This class of transform can be applied to any even length vector, and is applicable to finite fields and is useful for constructing error control codes.

  • In this paper, a slotted CDMA_ALOHA protocol with hybrid ARQ is proposed for the wireless CDMA communication networks. The proposed protocol combines the characteristics of the slotted ALOHA, CDMA, and the hybrid ARQ, in order to increase the throughput by reducing the number of retransmissions when the channel experiences heavy traffic. The main feature of the proposed protocol is the utilization of the forward error correction capability to correct errors that appear after the CDMA dispreading of the packets. The base station does not need to ask so often for retransmission of erroneous packets. It will request for retransmission only when the FEC capability is exceeded. The performance of the proposed protocol is analyzed by considering the packet collision probability as well as the bit error probability. The numerical results show that the system throughput is closely related to the bit error rate of the wireless link and the FEC coding rate.

  • In this paper, an image coding scheme using removal of isolated coefficients and quadtree structure in wavelet transformed domain, is suggested. The number of significant coefficients can be reduced by quantizing in different stages according to the weights of the each band. The quadtree structure preseves the location information while significantly reducing the number of bits required to represent the locality of an image. To increase the efficienty of the wavelet transformed images using quadtree, the energy of the isolated coefficients is analyzed and those with low energy are eliminated. Furthermore, to control the bit rate the entropy of each block is sorted according to its energy concentration and the number of bits required for encoding, and the blocks with low energy are removed to achieve the desired compression rate.

  • The artificial gene coding for anticoagulant hirudin was placed under the control of the GAL 10 promoter and expressed in the galactokinase-deficient strain (Δgal1) of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which uses galactose only as a gratuitous inducer in order to avoid its consumption. For efficient production of recombinant hirudin, a carbon source other than galactose should be provided in the medium to support growth of the Δgal1 strain. Here we demonstrate the successful use of glucose in the fed-batch fermentation of the Δgal1 strain to achieve efficient production of recombinant hirudin, with a yield of up to 400 mg hirudin/L.
