The conventional block-based motion prediction suffers, especially in low bit-rate video application, from shortcomings such as blocking artifacts of motion field and unstable motion estimation. To overcome the deficiency, this paper proposes one method of adopting a new motion compensation scheme based on the irregular triangular mesh structure while keeping the current block-based DCT coding structure of H.263 as much as possible. To represent the reconstructed previous frame using minimal number of control points, the proposed method designs content-adaptive irregular triangular meshes, and then, estimate the motion vector of each control point using the affine transformation-based matching. The predicted current frame is obtained by applying the affine transformation to each triangular mesh. Experiment with the several real video sequences shows improvement both in objective and subjective picture quality over the conventional block-based H.263 method.
In this paper, we implement several methods to improve an audio collaboration system over IP networks, and then evaluate the performance of the implemented methods. In general, speech and audio quality degrades depending on the characteristics of IP networks such as jitter and packet loss. In order to reduce this quality degradation, we propose a lower bit rate audio delivery scheme using the MPEG-2 AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) audio codec in a viewpoint that a packet loss rate could be reduced by a smaller packet size. In addition, iLBC (Internet Low-Bitrate Codec) and the G.711 packet loss concealment algorithm defined by IEFT and ITU-T, respectively, are applied to a audio collaboration system. RAT (Robust-Audio Tool)[7] is used as a baseline platform for the implementation of the proposed methods. It is shown from the implementation that the implemented MPEG-2 AAC audio codec with a bitrate of 256 kbit/s performs as similar as the uncompressed audio quality with a bitrate of 512 kbit/s, and that iLBC and the G.711 packet loss concealment algorithm can improve speech quality when a packet loss rate is 2~10%.

The purpose of this study was to determine the strategies that middle school students used in solving problems concerning density and solubility. These were compared in the aspects of problem contexts for 42 students of varying logical reasoning ability, spatial ability, and learning approach. A coding scheme used consists of five categories: reading & organization, production, errors, evaluation, and strategy. Students' protocols were analyzed after intercoder agreement had been established to be .95. The results were as follows: 1. Students had more difficulties in reading and organizing the problems in everyday contexts than in scientific contexts. Students at the concrete-operational stage and / or surface approach were more likely to have difficulties in reading and organizing the problems than those at the formal-operational stage and / or deep approach. 2. Students tended to split up the solubility problems into sub-problems and to solve the density problem in everyday contexts in random manner. These were significantly correlated with the test scores concerning logical reasoning ability, spatial ability, and learning approach at the .1 level of significance. 3. Major errors in solving the density problems were to disregard the given information or generated and to use inappropriate information. Many errors in solving the solubility problems were found to be executive errors. The strategy to use the information given appropriately was positively related to students' logical reasoning ability, spatial ability, and learning approach. 4. More evaluation strategies were found in everyday contexts. Their strategies to grasp the meaning of answers and to check the math were significantly related to students' logical reasoning ability. 5. Students used the random trial-and-error strategy more than the systematic strategy and the systematic trial-and-error strategy, especially in everyday contexts. The strategies used by the students were significantly related to students' logical reasoning ability, spatial ability, and learning approach.

In video coding, the first frame of a GOP is encoded in intra mode which generates a larger number of bits. In addition, the first frame is used for the inter mode encoding of the following frames. Thus the intial QP for the first frame encoding affects the first frame as well as the following frames. To determine the initial QP that maximizes the PSNR of a GOP, several algorithms which uses the ratio of the PSNR of the I frame and the PSNR of P frames of a GOP have been proposed. In this paper, we propose a new traffic model that can be used to determine the optimal initial QP simply and exactly in algorithms that use the PSNR ratio. We first analyze the characteristics of the PSNR ratio of I and P frames and the PSNR of a GOP, and then propose a new traffic model which can represent the characteristics and determine the optimal intial QP. It is shown by experimental results that the initial QP determination method with the proposed model can predict an optimal initial QP whose difference from the optimal value is less than 2. The proposed scheme can also generate the PSNR performance better than that of the existing JVT algorithm.

As part of its space development program, Korea has a plan for the launch of a lunar orbiter and a lunar lander. To enable the transmission of lunar information based on multimedia, it is necessary to construct a communication system that is capable of transmitting large-volume telemetry data. The CCSDS standard recommends the deferred NAK mode as ARQ scheme for reliable long-distance deep-space communication systems. In this paper, we implement a space communication system simulator in the deferred NAK mode using models of the lunar orbiter, the earth station, and the space environment. The simulator employs modulation techniques and turbo coding schemes for transmitting large-volume telemetry data. We analyze the transmission performance of telemetry data through the simulation.
Image sequence is compressed and stored as the unit of frame in computer, and reconstructed with desired quality according to several applications. In some cases specific parts are more important than other parts within a frame and these important parts must be reconstructed with high quality compared with the other parts and several schemes are suggested for such application and these schemes need to separate the important parts from a given frame, and also the syntax of shape, texture, and motion information must be defined for important parts and the other parts. But syntax rule in H.261, MPEG1 or MPEG2 is not suitable for our application because the syntax rules in the existing scheme can not express shape information for separating the important regions from each frame. So we propose a new syntax rule which represents the shape, texture and motion information in the circumstances where specific important parts exist in a frame.
In this paper, we study on a radio multiple sensing interface module to accurately decide serious error sources that are happened by unexpectable problems in industrial fields, in addition, we study a reliability improvement scheme to guarantee the integrity of multiple sensing data. For multiple sensing interface module, communication drivers such as USART, TWI, ADC and GPIO-I2C are implemented. to improve the transmission reliability, reed-Solomon code is used. From the simulation result of this system in indoor environment, we confirm that the reliability of RS coded data is improved about 5 times than uncoded data. Moreover, we prove that multiple sensing interface module is suitable to diagnose error sources of industrial automaton equipment.

A real-time frame-layer rate control algorithm with a token bucket traffic shaper is proposed for low bit rate video coding. The proposed rate control method uses a non-iterative optimization method for low computational complexity, and performs bit allocation at the frame level to minimize the average distortion over an entire sequence as well as variations in distortion between frames. In order to reduce the quality fluctuation, we use a sliding window scheme which does not require the pre-analysis process. Therefore, the proposed algorithm does not produce time delay from encoding, and is suitable for real-time low-complexity video encoder. Experimental results indicate that the proposed control method provides better visual and PSNR performances than the existing rate control method.

This paper propose a new frame level rate control algorithm for improving video quality and decreasing quality variation of an entire video sequence in a very low bit rate environment. In the proposed scheme, the allocated bits to a GOP are distributed to each frame properly according to the frame characteristics as well as the buffer status and the channel bandwidth. The H.264 standard uses various coding modes and optimization methods to improve the compression performance, which makes it difficult to control the generated traffic accurately. In this paper, proper prediction models for low bit rate environments are lust proposed, and a target distortion is determined using the models. According to the target distortion, the bit budget is allocated to each frame. It is shown by experimental results that the new algorithm can generate the PSNR performance better than that of the existing rate control algorithm.

Recently proliferating heterogeneous multimedia service environments should be able to deal with many different transmission speeds, image sizes, or qualities of video. However, not many existing video compression standards satisfy those necessities. To satisfy the functional requirements, the standardization of the H.264/AVC Scalable Extension (SE) technique has been recently completed. It is an extension of the H.264/AVC which can encode several image sizes and qualities at the same time as a single bitstream. To perform optimum mode decision, motion estimation is performed for all MB modes, and the RD costs are compared to identify an MB mode with the smallest RD cost. This increases computational complexity of H.264/AVC SE encoding. In this paper, we propose an early skip mode detection scheme to reduce candidate modes and suggest an algorithm of fast mode decision utilizing reference modes according to the mode history.
