  • Dalvik is a virtual machine (VM) that is designed to run Java-based Android applications. A trace-based just-in-time (JIT) compilation technique is currently employed to improve performance of the Dalvik VM. However, due to runtime compilation overhead, the trace-based JIT compiler provides only a few simple optimizations. Moreover, because each trace contains only a few instructions, the trace-based JIT compiler inherently exploits fewer optimization and parallelization opportunities than a method-based JIT compiler that compiles method-by-method. So we propose a new method-based JIT compiler, named DEX2C, in order to improve performance by finding more opportunities for both optimization and parallelization in Android applications. We employ C code as an intermediate product in order to find more optimization opportunities by using the GNU C Compiler (GCC), and we will detect parallelism by using the Intel C/C++ parallel compiler and the AESOP compiler in our future work. In this paper, we introduce our DEX2C compiler, which dynamically translates Dalvik bytecodes (DEX) into C code with method granularity. We also describe a new method-based JIT interface in the Dalvik VM for the DEX2C compiler. Our experiment results show that our compiler and its interface achieve significant performance improvement by up to 15.2 times and 3.7 times on average, in Element Benchmark, and up to 2.8 times for FFT in Smartbench.

  • As the use of mobile devices such as smartphones increases, there is growing interest on the benefits of virtualization in embedded systems. Full virtualization has the advantage of running the guest virtual machine without modifying the guest operating system. However, full virtualization suffers slow execution speed due to the cost of context switching between the virtual machines and the virtual machine monitor. In this paper, we propose a translated block and context switching optimization to improve the guest execution speed in the embedded system. As a result, the improved dynamic binary translator is up to 5.95 times faster than the native execution. Performance degradation is less than that of the other virtualization system.

  • A post-processing program based on the OOP(Object-Oriented Programming) concept has been developed for flow visualization of the flow analysis code(PowerCFD) using unstructured cell-centered method. User-friendly GUI(GTaphic User Interface) has been built on the base of MFC(Microsoft Foundation Class). The program is organized as modules by classes including those based on VTK(Visualization ToolKit)-library, and these classes are made to function through inheritance and cooperation which is an important and valuable OOP concept. The major functions of this post-processor program are introduced and demonstrated, which include mesh plot, contour plot, vector plot, surface plots, cut plot, clip plot, xy-plot and streamline plot as well as view manipulation (translation, rotation, scaling etc).

  • Two high resolution compressive schemes, CICSAM(Ubbink, 1997) and HRIC(Muzaferija & Peric, 1999), in interface capturing method are reviewed briefly with respect to the extended forms suitable for unstructured meshes. And then those are applied to three typical test cases of translation test, shearing flow test and collapsing water problem with an obstacle. It is accomplished by implementing the high resolution schemes in the in-house CFD code(PowerCFD) for computing 3-D flow with an unstructured cell-centered method, which is based on the finite-volume technique and fully conservative. The calculated results show that CICSAM is better than HRIC with respect to accuracy and robustness, although either scheme can be used as a good choice for free surface or two-phase flow simulation.

  • Several high resolution schemes such as OSHER, MUSCL, SMART, GAMMA, WACEB and CUBISTA are applied to two typical test cases of a translation test and a collapsing water column problem for the accurate capturing of fluid interfaces. It is accomplished by implementing the high resolution schemes in the in-house CFD code(PowerCFD) for computing 3-D flow with an unstructured cell-centered method, which is based on the finite-volume technique and fully conservative. The calculated results are found to show that SMART scheme gives the best performance with respect to accuracy and robustness.

  • Objective: There is a lack of studies using the 3D-2D image registration techniques on the mechanism of a shoulder injury for ice hockey players. This study aimed to analyze in vivo 3D glenohumeral joint arthrokinematics in collegiate ice hockey athletes and compare shoulder scaption with or without a hockey stick using the 3D-2D image registration technique. Method: We recruited 12 male elite ice hockey players (age, 19.88 ± 0.65 years). For arthrokinematic analysis of the common shoulder abduction movements of the injury pathogenesis of ice hockey players, participants abducted their dominant arm along the scapular plane and then grabbed a stick using the same motion under C-arm fluoroscopy with 16 frames per second. Computed tomography (CT) scans of the shoulder complex were obtained with a 0.6-mm slice pitch. Data from the humerus translation distances, scapula upward rotation, anterior-posterior tilt, internal to external rotation angles, and scapulohumeral rhythm (SHR) ratio on glenohumeral (GH) joint kinematics were outputted using a MATLAB customized code. Results: The humeral translation in the stick hand compared to the bare hand moved more anterior and more superior until the abduction angle reached 40°. When the GH joint in the stick hand was at the maximal abduction of the scapula, the scapula was externally rotated 2~5° relative to 0°. The SHR ratio relative to the abduction along the scapular plane at 40° indicated a statistically significant difference between the two groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion: With arm loading with the stick, the humeral and scapular kinematics showed a significant correlation in the initial section of the SHR. Although these correlations might be difficult in clinical settings, ice hockey athletes can lead to the movement difference of the scapulohumeral joints with inherent instability.

  • Differential display based on PCR was employed to identify genes expressed during tuber-developing stage of potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Irish Cobbler). An eukaryotic initiation factor 5A (eIF-5A) clone isolated from a cDNA library constructed with developing micro-tuber using a probe of PCR fragment. We isolated three positive clones and ore of them contained open reading frame. This clone revealed high sequence similarity to tomato eIF 5A cDNA. At the DNA level, there is 94.8% identity with the tomato eIF-5A4, whereas at the protein level there is a high identity with 97.5%. The potato eIF 5A clone is 716 bp in length and contains a single open reading frame from 57 to 539 bp, a 56 bp 5'-untranslated region and a 177 bp 3'-untranslated region. The deduced protein composed of 160 amino acid residues, with a predicted molecular mass of 17.4 kD and an estimated pl of 5.5. The sequence of 12 (STSKTGKHGHAK) amino acids among eIF-5A proteins is perfectly conserved from yeast to human. That sequence in potato eIF-5A protein is also conserved at position 46 to 57 amino acid. This region embeds the post-translational modification site of the lysine residue (at the seventh K) to hypusine that is crucial to eIF-5A activity. The northern blot analysis of eIF5A has shown abundant expression, mainly in flower organs (stamen, ovary, petal, sepal), fruit and stolen.

  • A company's private network protected by a firewall and NAT(Network Address Translation) is not accessible directly through an external internet. However, as Reverse Connection technology used by NetCat extends to the technologies such as SSH Tunnel or HTTP Tunnel, now anyone can easily access a private network of corporation protected by a firewall and NAT. Furthermore, while these kinds of technologies are commercially stretching out to various services such as a remote control and HTTP Tunnel, security managers in a company or general users are confused under the circumstances of inner or outer regulation which is not allowed to access to an internal system with a remote control. What is more serious is to make a covert channel invading a company's private network through a malicious code and all that technologies. By the way, what matters is that a given security system such as a firewall cannot shield from these perceived dangers. So, we analyze the indirect access of technological methods and the status quo about a company's internal network and find a solution to get rid of the related dangers.

  • This paper presents a method for the multilingual product retrieval agent through XML and the semantic networks in e-commerce. Retrieval for products is an important process, since it represents interfaces of the customer contact to the e-commerce. Keyword-based retrieval is efficient as long as the product information is structured and organized. But when the product information is expressed across many online shopping malls, especially when it is expressed in different languages with cultural backgrounds, buyers' product retrieval needs language translation with ambiguities resolved in a specific context. This paper presents a RDF modeling case that resolves semantic problems in the representation of product information and across the boundaries of language domains. With adoption of UNSPSC code system, this paper designs and implements an architecture for the multilingual product retrieval agents. The architecture is based on the central repository model of product catalog management with distributed updating processes. It also includes the perspectives of buyers and suppliers. And the consistency and version management of product information are controlled by UNSPSC code system. The multilingual product names are resolved by semantic networks, thesaurus and ontology dictionary for product names.

  • Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) has been used for decades as it provides sound semantics for hierarchical modular specification of discrete event systems. Instead of the mathematical specification, the DEVS diagram, based on the structured DEVS formalism, has provided more intuitive and convenient representation of complex DEVS models. This paper proposes a clean room process for implementation and verification of a DEVS diagram model specification into a simulation software source code. Specifically, it underlies a sequence of transformation steps from conformance and integrity checking of a given diagram model, translation into a corresponding tabular model, and finally conversion to a simulation source code, with each step being inversely verifiable for traceability. A simple example helps developers to understand the proposed process with associated transformation methods; a case study shows that the proposed process is effective for and adaptable to practical simulation software development.
