The effect of cultivation season on the cocoon filament quality of authorized silkworm variety, GoldenSilk was examined with cocoon filament character, reeling character, and fiber character during 3 years. In cocoon filament character, filament length of spring and autumn cocoon was 979 and 879 m, respectively. Cocoon filament weight of spring and autumn cocoon was 33.1 and 26.5 cg, which is lower than that of general bivoltine strain, BaeGokJam. Raw silk percentage of spring and autumn cocoon was 15.65 and 13.77%, respectively. In reeling character, reelability showed similar trend regardless of cultivation season and strain. However, the length and weight of non-broken filament of spring season were slightly higher than those of autumn cocoon. Cultivation season did not affect on the fiber characteristics such as clearness and neatness, lousiness, and degumming loss. In cocoon character, filament length, size, and weight, spring cocoon filament showed higher value than autumn cocoon, but lower than authorized general silkworm varieties. In reeling characteristics, non-broken length and weight showed the similar trends with the cocoon filament character. However, the reelability of GoldenSilk cocoon was not affected by cultivation season. The reelability of GoldenSilk cocoon was also similar with that of authorized general one. Fiber character including clearness and neatness, lousiness, and degumming loss was also similar regardless of the rearing season and different strain.
Strength, elongation and elasticity are essential properties with regard to the tensile properties of raw silk thread. The reasonable harmony of the above three physical characters appears to be the specific nature of the raw silk thread and the dynamical functions are determined by the cocoon filament forming the raw silk. From such viewpoint, the author has studied the tensile property of the thread when the cocoon filament is stretched and transformed. The results obtained are as follows: 1) The stretching strength of the inner layer filament is stronger than that of the outer and medium layer ones. 2) The stretching strength of the filaments is influenced by the moisture-heat denaturalization of cocoon layer sericin in the drying process. 3) The more transformed functions by the stretching become, the lower the elasticity index of the cocoon filament was shown. 4) When cocoon layer sericin is denatured by moisture and heat, elasticity index of the filament is decreased.
The tensile properties of cocoon filament obtained from the dried cocoon were studied by deniroscope and tensilon with special attachments. The strength and dried elongation at break feint with dry and swollen samples were observed. The apparent young's modulus was also calculated with the dry samples. The results obtained are as follows. 1) The breaking strength of dry and swollen samples decreased in parallel with denier decreasing ratio in the whole length of a cocoon filament. 2) Tensile strength of inner-layer filament, when treated at the temperature of 95$^{\circ}C$ for 15 min., was 37 per cent of outer-layer filament. 3) By swelling treatment, the breaking strength of the filament was decreased but the elongation was increased. 4) Apparent young's modulus and tensile strength per denier of inner-layer filament were higher than those of the rest cocoon layer.

By means of correlation analysis and path coefficient analysis, 18 characteristics of 325 conserved silkworm races were studied for the selecting efficiency on main silk quality characteristics. The result showed that selecting lines with heavier cocoon weight are beneficial to raise the weight of have. Choosing strains with higher cocoon shell percentage, longer filament length and better reelability percentage is good for increasing non-broken filament length. Selecting lines with medium daily weight of have produced in the fifth instar, medium cocoon shell percentage and simultaneously selecting heavier cocoon shell weight are favorable to promote reelability percentage. Choosing strains with heavier cocoon weight, higher cocoon shell percentage, heavier daily weight of bave produced in the fifth instar and heavier weight of bave but shorter filament length may hopefully breed out a race with thick filament size. And selecting strains with heavier weight of have and fine filament size are beneficial to increase filament length. Selecting lines with higher cocoon shell percentage and heavier weight of bave are favorable to raise raw silk percentage of cocoon. There are no significant direct or indirect correlation coefficient between viability and major characteristics of silk quality. It is, therefore, feasible to breed a silkworm race with excellent vitality and good silk quality as well.
In order to investigate the possibility of fine-size cocoon production by the use of imidazole compound, Trifumin, the cocoon and cocoon filament qualities, dietary efficiency and fibroin component were examined. cocoon size, cocoon weight and cocoon shell weight of trimolter were smaller than those of tetramolter. Cocoon shell weight of trimolter was 58% and 26% of that of tetramolter in the 3rd instar treated larvae and in the 4th instar treated larvae, respectively. Amount of cocoon shell produced per 1g dry matter ingested was 94% and 85% of that of tetramolter in the 3rd instar treated larvae and in the 4th instar larvae, respectively. The effects of Trifumin on the reeling tests were different according to the stage of the treatment. When Trifumin was treated at the 3rd instar larvae, reelability of cocoon filament, amount of cocoon filament, size of cocoon filament, reelability percentage and raw silk percentage of cocoon were 100%, 60%, 60%, 97% and 90%, respectively. When Trifumin was treated at the 4th imstar larvae, most of reelability tests were inferior to those of the 3rd instar treated larvae, but reelavility percentage was increased 13%. The Trifumin treatment did not affect the electrophoretic patterns of cocoon fibroin.
Extensive studies were undertaken to analyze the genetic basis of economically important quantitative characters in the silkworm by diallel crosses of four inbred lines differing widely in silk yielding ability. Some differences between the reciprocal corsses were detected in cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight, cocoon filament length and cocoon filament weight in case the parental lines were greatly differenent each other in silk yielding ability. The general combining ability (GCA) varied with the inbred lines and M242, a Chieese sexlimited larval marking variety showed high GCA value in the economic characters, such as cocoon yield, cocoon weight, cocoon filament length and weight, and raw silk percentage. The highest heterosis effect, about 13% to 14% was seen in cocoon and raw silk yield and it was low in cocoon reelability and raw silk percentage with less than 1%. It is advisable to improve highly heritable quantitative characters such as larval duration, cocoon shell weight, cocoon filament length and raw silk percentage by means of selection, and to select single crosses with high heterosis effect for cocoon weight and cocoon yield which show overdominance. Genetic correlation should be considered when more than two characters are targets for improvement and selecting high cocoon shell weight is effective to breed high silk yielding varieties. It is difficult to improve cocoon reelability because of low heritability (0.11) and its negative correlation with cocoon-silk quality.

In the present study, hybrid vigour in terms of heterosis and over dominance of newly evolved bivoltine hybrids and their reciprocals raised from the promising newly evolved bivoltine breeds were calculated for the important parameters like pupation, cocoon yield, cocoon weight, shell weight, shell ratio, raw silk percentage, filament length and neatness. Through there was no significant difference among the hybrids for the characters pupation, cocoon yield and cocoon weight, the magnitude of heterosis and over dominance were varied significantly for these characters. However, significant differences were observed between new hybrids and control hybrid for the characters like cocoon shell weight, cocoon shell ratio, filament length and raw silk percentage. The results indicate that majority of new hybrids have shown higher heterosis and over dominance than control hybrid. The data also indicate that highest mean heterosis of all new hybrids was recorded for cocoon yield followed by filament length. Whereas highest mean over dominance was recorded for cocoon yield followed by cocoon weight. Negative mean heterosis and over dominance were recorded for the trait cocoon shell ratio. Based on the results, the importance of three hybrids viz., CSR2 ${\times}$ CSR4, CSR2 ${\times}$ CSR5 and CSR3 ${\times}$ CSR6 and their reciprocals (CSR4 ${\times}$ CSR2, CSR5 ${\times}$ CSR2 and CSR6 ${\times}$ CSR3) which exhibited significant heterosis and over dominance, for commercial exploitation was discussed.

The present investigation was carried out to study the possible cause for reciprocal difference in silkworm hybrids. By utilising the polyvoltine race Pure Mysore (PM) and newly evolved breeds (CSR2, CSR5, CSR16 and CSR17), the direct and reciprocal crosses of polyvoltine ${\times}$ bivoltine and also bivoltine hybrids were studied. The hybrids of polyvoltine ${\times}$ bivoltine (direct) are superior to their reciprocal crosses in respect of cocoon yield, cocoon weight and filament length. The reciprocal crosses of polyvoltine ${\times}$ bivoltine are superior to their direct crosses in respect of fecundity and short larval duration. No significant differences were observed in the characters like cocoon shell ratio, raw silk percentage, denier, reelability and neatness in both polyvoltine ${\times}$ bivoltine direct crosses and their reciprocals. The expression of cocoon characters as a function of sex revealed that direct crosses (polyvoltine ${\times}$ bivoltine) showed higher cocoon weight, pupal weight, shell weight and longer filament length in females than the reciprocal crosses (bivoltine ${\times}$ polyvoltine), where as these characters in males were almost the same in both direct and reciprocal crosses, indicating that the sex-linked genetic factor played a more important role. it was clear that difference in cocoon yield observed in reciprocal crosses of polyvoltine ${\times}$ bivoltine was due to the low cocoon and shell weight in females which was turn due to presence of early maturity genes (Lme) linked with sex-chromosome (X) which effect on larvae period of the silkworm. In bivoltine hybrids, i.e., both direct and their reciprocals crosses, all the characters viz., hatching percentage, larval duration, survival, cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight, cocoon shell ratio, raw silk percentage, filament length, denier, reelability and neatness did not show any significant difference (except number of eggs laid by moth) which could account for presence of same maturity genes (Lm) in both direct and reciprocal crosses. it was clear that reciprocal differences occur when the hybrids are prepared from the parental strains with different voltinism.
This study was carried out to define the effects of anti-juvenile hormone analogue(AJH) treatment at different silkworm larval stages on some silk filament properties. It was revealed that the treatments at the 1st and 2nd days of the 3rd instar as well as the 1st day of the 4th instar resulted to trimolters induction without lethal effect. The trimolters induced by treatment at the 1st day of the 4th instar showed the shortest larval duration and the lowest single cocoon weight, cocoon shell ratio, cocoon size, single filament length and denier of filament compared with those of the control, while the trimolters induced by the 3rd-instar treatment showed intermediate values. All treatments showed no significant differences from the aspect fo degumming ratio, elongation rate and crystallinity index of fibroin. However the silk filament obtained from the treatment at the 1st day of the 4th instar showed the highest tenacity which was revealed to be related to the better uniformity of filament by the means of microscopic photographing. FT-IR spectroscopy of the silk fibroin showed a sharp and strong peak at the position of 794.72 cm-1 in all AJH-treated samples regardless of trimolters induction, which was absent in control.
The study was conducted to obtain the genetic information on heterosis and combining ability of the quantitative characters for F1 hybrid breeding in silkworms. Six parental varieties and each set of 30 diallel crosses in F1's were used as materials, and bred on the randomized complete block design with three replications. Fourteen characters were observed with the twenty samples in each tray. The data were analyzed for (1) heterosis and combining ability in F1 hybrid. The heterosis in the weight and the length of cocoon showed positively high at 24.51%, and 23.4%, respectively and the weight of the whole cocoon as well as the weight of the whole cocoon layer showed a siginificant heterosis ranging from 15.56% to 15.71% and from 17.14% to 19.01%, but the fifth and the total instar period showed negative heterosis. It was found that the combination between, C70XRomogua and N9 X Romogua showed highly a negative heterosis on the fifth instar period and for the cocoon weight. The female of N9+Sansuian and the male of Romogua X Sansurian have a high heterosis effect, on the cocoon shell weight, and Sansurian X Romogua(reciprocal) on the length and the weight of cocoon filament with no regard to sexuality. The significant maternal and cytoplasmic effect on heterosis of the cocoon weight and the cocoon shell weight were observed with the combinations, N9 X C5, N63 X C70 and on the length of the cocoon filament with the combinations, Sansurian X N63, Sansurian X C5, Sansurian X C70 and N9 X C70, N63 X C70 on the weight of cocoon filament. As mean squared of GCA, SCA and RCA were significant with these combining ability for all characters resulted from additive and non-additive altogether and there is a significant difference between reciprocals. Sansurian showed a negative GCA effect on the fifth and total larval duration, but the higher positive GCA effects took places with varieties N9 and C5 on the length, width, weight of cocoon, cocoon shell weight, percentage of cocoon shell weight, length and weight of cocoon filament, percentage of raw-silk with no regard to both generations and silkworm sexuality. The values of SCA between the cross combinations varied generation-wise and sex-wise. It was shown that SCA value for the fifth instar period was highly negative for Sansurian X C70, Romogua X C70, Sansurian X C5, Romogua X C5, but it was positive effect on the cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight with N9 X C5, and C70 X Sansurian, on the length of cocoon filament with N9 X C5, Romogua X Sansurian on the weight of cocoon filament between Romogua and N63 and on the percentage of raw-silk between the combination of Sansurian X Romoga.
