  • In dentistry, precious metal alloys are, mainly due to economic factors, increasingly displaced by alternatives containing Ni-Cr-Co. There are some reports where hypersensitive reactions to Ni-Cr-Co alloys are presented and discussed. The reactions reported vary from mucosa contact stomatitis to generalized dermatitis without any oral mucosal reaction. The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence of nickel, chrome, cobalt and copper, and to know whether subjects with positive skin reaction to nickel would also demonstrate adverse intraoral reaction to a non-precious metal nickel. The patch tests were performed in 81 subjects(male 39, female 42) and nickel sulfate 5% aq., potassium bichromate 0.5% at., cobalt chloride 2% aq., & copper sulfate 1% aq., were used for test allergens. And then the intraoral tests were performed in 16 subjects, 8 subjects with positive allergic skin reaction to nickel and 8 subjects with negative allergic skin reaction. A pure metallic nickel plate was attached to the buccal side of the upper second premolar. The results are as follows : 1. The frequency of nickel sensitivity was 9.9% (2 men, 6 women), cobalt was 4.9% (1 man, 3 women), and chrome was 2.5% (2 men) respectively and there was no positive reaction to copper 2. The positive reactions were 8 of 23 (34.8%) with a history of jewelry allergic reactions and 3 of 58 (5.1%) without a history of jewelry allergic reactions. 3. Three of 8 subjects with positive skin reaction. gave reactions to the metal plates.

  • In general, metallic bio-materials is more widely used in solid tissue like bone or tooth than flexible tissue such as skin or muscle. Especially, Cobalt Chrome Molybdenum(Co-Cr-Mo), which is used in tooth surgery, has a great corrosion resistance. Because this bio-material is non-toxic in human body, and has a bio-compatibility that the vital reaction is not occurred with tissue in body. However the chemical reaction is occurred by fatal matter that deteriorate the property of material surface in conventional polishing, and it can affect to fatal disease in human body or decrease the material properties such as hardness, yield strength or bio-compatibility. This surface in poor condition can cause development of corrosion or bacteria. In this study, MR fluid polishing is used to minimize the scratch, pit or surface flaws generated in conventional polishing. Surface roughness is measured according to the polishing condition to obtain fine surface condition.

  • Metal-additive manufacturing techniques, such as selective laser sintering (SLS), are increasingly utilized for new biomaterials, such as cobalt-chrome (Co-Cr). In this study, Co-Cr gas-atomized powders are used as charge materials for the SLS process. The aim is to understand the consolidation of Co-Cr alloy powder and characterization of samples sintered using SLS under various conditions. The results clearly suggest that besides the matrix phase, the second phase, which is attributed to pores and oxidation particles, is observed in the sintered specimens. The as-built samples exhibit completely different microstructural features compared with the casting or wrought products reported in the literature. The microstructure reveals melt pools, which represent the characteristics of the scanning direction, in particular, or of the SLS conditions, in general. It also exposes extremely fine grain sizes inside the melt pools, resulting in an enhancement in the hardness of the as-built products. Thus, the hardness values of the samples prepared by SLS under all parameter conditions used in this study are evidently higher than those of the casting products.

  • This study is to measure and compare the hardness and tensile strength of each time after we recast seven times continually only with and metal alloy Chromium-Cobalt alloy used in the production of partial denture frame work. The result of the experiment were as follow; 1) The result of the hardness measurement The result of the first casting was $490.48{\pm}38.38$ and that of the second recasting was $455.18{\pm}35.61$ and form the third recasting. the result were $518.38{\pm}37.68$ and over. The change of the hardness difference between each recasting was as follow; The hardness difference between the first casting and the second recasting was $35.25{\pm}31.93$ and that between the second recasting and the third recasting was $63.20{\pm}54.02$. There was a statistically significant difference(P<0.01) in the above hardness, however, there was little difference on the whole. And after the third recasting, the hardness grew high a little bit. That is why low-melting metals such as Cr, Mn, Cu of alloy ingredient was evaporated or there was an effect of changes in metal crystal structure, I suppose. 2) The result of the tensile strength measurement. There was a statistically significant difference(P<0.01) between the first casting and the second, the fourth recasting, however. there was little difference in general.

  • Purpose of this experiment is to evaluate the effect of titanium on the castability when the titanium is added to the Co-Cr alloy. Raw materials Cobalt, Chrome, Molybdenum, Silicon, Manganase, Carbon, Nitrogen, Titanium were weighted and prepared. $Biosil^F$ (Degudent, Germany) was the control group. To the experimental group, different weight percent of titanium was added from 1 wt% to 4 wt%. The wax pattern is $30{\times}40$ cm in size, rectangular in shape and has total of 160 grids. Centrifugal machine (Neutrodyne Easy Ti: Manfredy) was used for casting. For evaluation of the castability, the number of complete grids was counted by visual inspection and X-ray inspection. The test showed similar castability with the control group in the titanium addition of 1 wt% to 3 wt%. The titanium addition of 4 wt% showed poor result. With titanium lower than 4 wt%, the experiment metals showed proper castability with high expectation of successful clinical use.

  • Metallic dialkyldithiophosphates are widely used in lubricating oils as antioxidant and antiwear agents. Zinc DDTP are used most frequently in lubricating oil. Zinc, lead, tin and cobalt DDTP were prepared with primary and secondary alkyl groups. The effects of oxidation, thermal stability, metal corrosion and antiwear of each metallic DDTP prepared were studied. Based on the results, cobalt DDTP has a significant effect of antiwear on chrome alloy steel comparing with the other metallic DDTP. Also cobalt DDTP has a characteristic property of thermal sensitivity in its color, which was shown by the color change from brown to blue over a certain temperature. Another phenomenon obtained was that all metallic DDTP initiates the effect of antioxidation at the time of reaching to a certain effective acid concentration in lubricating oil.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the level of each metal in non-precious metal alloys dental casting, still used even banned for use and trade by the law, for oral health. Methods: Two kinds of metal alloys were analyzed. One was Ticonium 100 for removable prosthesis and the other was Rexillium V for dental porcelain. Two samples of each metal alloy were made in 0.5g, 1.0g, and 1.5g. Total number of samples were 12. Two kinds of lactic acid Solution, pH7 and pH4.6, were injected into each samples. After injection, each samples had been for 21days ${\pm}$ 1 hour in the water tank of which temperature was $37^{\circ}C$. The level of metal was measured in each sample by inductively couplled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer. Results: In both metal alloys, metals, chrome, nickel, beryllium, and molybdenum, were founded. In Ticonium 1000, the highest level of nickel was 2.531ppm in 1.5g pH4.6 sample while the highest level of nickel was 4.062ppm in 1.5g pH4.6 sample of Rexillium V. In chemical composition of these methal alloys, chrome(14~17%) was much more than beryllium(1.95~1.99%) and molybdenum(5.0~9.0%) but berllium and molybdenum were founded more than chrome in samples. Therefore, chrome showed better anti-corrosion than other metal alloys. In both metal alloys, more metals were founded in higher pH level and more mass. Levels of chrome was significantly different in samples of both metal alloys in each pH level(p<0.05). Levels of nickels was significantly different in samples of both metal alloys in each pH level(p<0.05). Conclusion: For oral health, further studies are needed in nickel-chrome metal alloy and cobalt metal alloy of non-beryllium in addittion to beryllium metal alloy and also long-term studies needed in various period and other non-percious metal alloys for dental casting.
