The purpose of this study was to evaluate the response in aspect of attachment and growth rate of osteoblasts and growth rate of osteoblasts and human gingival fibroblasts to the commercially pure titanium(CP titanium)and titanium alloy(Ti-6AI-4V) that are used widely as implant materials, and to obtain the basic information to ideal implant materials. In the studly, commercially pure titanium in first test group, titanium alloy(Ti-6AI-4V) in second test group, cobalt-chrome-molybdenum alloy(Co-Cr-Mo alloy) in positive control group, and tissue culture polystyrene plate in negative control group were used. The results of this study were as follows. 1. Bone marrow cells cultured on CP titanium and Ti-6Al-4V showed significantly greater attachment and growth rate(p(0.05) compared to Co-Cr-Mo alloy in each time. 2. There were no significant differences(p>0.05) in attachment and growth rate of bone marrow cells cultured on CP titanium and Ti-6AI-4V or tissue culture plate. 3. Most bone marrow cells cultured on CP titanium, Ti-6Al-4V and tissue culture plate were attached well to each substratum in first 2days, and then, grew at higher growth rate. On the other hand, some cells cultured on Co-Cr-Mo alloy failed to attach in first 2 days, and then, attached cells grew at lower growth rate than other groups. 4. Attachment and growth rates of gingival fibroblasts cultured on CP titanium and Ti-6Al-4V showed no significant differences(p>0.05) compared to Co-Cr-Mo alloy in 2 days, but significantly greater increase(p<0.05) in 5 and 9 days. 5. There were no significantly differences(p>0.05) between growth rates on gingival fibroblasts cultured on CP titanium, Ti-6Al-4V and tissue culture plate in 2 and 5days, but a significant lower growth rate(p<0.05) on CP titanium and Ti-6Al-4V versus tissue culture plate. 6. Some gingival fibroblasts cultured on all specimen groups failed to attach, but attached cells grew well, especially on CP titanium, Ti-GAl-4V and tissue culture plate. 7. There were no significant differences(P>0.05) between growth rates of both bone marrow cells and gingival fibroblasts cultured on CP titanium and Ti-6AI-4V. As a result of this study, both commercially pure titanium and Ti-6AI-4V showed excellent biocompatibility and there was no significant difference in the cellular response to the both metals. Bone marrow cells cultured on each substratum showed significantly greater growth rate and responded sensitively to cytotoxic effects of metal surfaces compared to gingival fibroblasts. Considering cell response to the substrate, it was likely that the composition itself of titanium metals have no significant effect on the biocompatibility. Further study need to be done to evaluate the influence of surface characteristics on cellular responses.
$In_2O_3$-based thin film sensor with 500-600 nm thick was fabricated for the detection of CO gas by rf magnetron sputtering. In order to improve both sensitivity to CO gas and selectivity to hydrogen gas containing -CH, ultra-thin transition metal Co catalyst was sputtered over $In_2O_3$ thin film and annealed at $500^{\circ}C$. Sensitivity to CO was maximum at the thickness of Co 2.1 nm and $300^{\circ}C$, and that to $C_3H_8$ was at the thickness of Co 1.4 nm and $350-400^{\circ}C$. From the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) result, ultra-thin Co was existed into CoO covered with $Co_2O_3$ on $In_2O_3$ particles, and thus p-n junction of $In_2O_3(n-type)$-CoO(p-type) was thought to be formed. In this p-n junction type sensors, sensing mechanism with reducing gases can be explained by the variation of depletion layer thickness formed in the interface.
Post-mortem pork loins were used to investigate the effects of gamma irradiation on the surface and inside color, heme pigments, muscle protein solubility, purge loss, electrophoretical patterns of muscle proteins, and tenderness. The muscle was cut into pieces of 5 cm in length and divided into both groups, vacuum-packaged and air-packaged. The packaged samples were irradiated at designed doses, 0, 1, 3, 5 and 10 kGy, by a cobalt-60 irradiator, and stored at $4^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. There were no significant differences in the purge loss and electrophoretic patterns. Hunter's L and a values of the surface and inside of loins increased by gamma irradiation, showing a bright red color and the red color was maintained during the storage of both samples. However, the concentrations of heme pigments were not significantly changed. Muscle protein solubility slightly increased by increasing the applied dose. The decrease in shear force was observed in irradiated samples. As result, it was expected that meat quality, especially color and processing properties, could be improved by gamma irradiation at below 5 kGy.
Schiff base ligands such as $SOPDH_2$, $SNDH_2$, $EBNH_2$, and $PBNH_2$ and their Co(II) complexes such as [$Co(II)(SND)(H_2O)_2$], [$Co(II)(SOPD)(H_2O)_2$], [$Co(II)(EBN)(H_2O)$], and [$Co(II)(PBN)(H_2O)$] have been synthesized. The mole ratio of Shiff base ligand to cobalt(II) for the Co(II) complexes was found to be 1:1. Also these complexes have been configurated with hexa-coordination. Reduction of dioxygen was investigated by cyclic voltammetry at glassy carbon electrodes modified with Schiff base Co(II) complexes in 1 M KOH aqueous solution. At modified glassy carbon electrode with Schiff base Co(II) complexes, reduction peak current of oxygen was increased and peak potential was shifted to more positive direction compared to bare glassy carbon electrode. The electrokinetic parameters such as number of electron and exchange rate constant were calculated from the results of cyclic voltammogrms. The reduction of dioxygen at glassy carbon electrode has been $2e^-$ reaction pathway. Exchange rate constant at glassy carbon electrode modified with Co(II) complexes was increased 2~10 times compared to bare electrode.
Co and Ni catalysts supported on $Al_2O_3$ for partial oxidation of methane producing hydrogen were synthesized using impregnation to incipient wetness. The activities of these catalysts for the partial oxidation of methane was investigated at 1 atm and $CH_4/O_2=2.0$ in the temperature range of $450{\sim}650^{\circ}C$. The reaction activity of $Ni/Al_2O_3$ and $Co/Al_2O_3$ catalysts with different loading was investigated. And the beneficial effects of Ni addition to $Co/Al_2O_3$ and the promotional effects of Ce and La addition to $Ni/Al_2O_3$ and $Co/Al_2O_3$ were investigated. These catalysts were characterized by XRD and SEM/EDX. Comparing catalyst loadings, 10 wt% Co and 10 wt% Ni were found to be optimal at the experimental conditions. The 10 wt% $Ni/Al_2O_3$ and 10 wt% $Co/Al_2O_3$ catalysts in partial oxidation of methane showed $CH_4$ conversions and CO selectivity close to the thermodynamic equilibrium levels, but showed lower $H_2$ selectivity than equilibrium level. The addition of Ni to $Co/Al_2O_3$ exhibited higher $H_2$ selectivity but beneficial effect was not observed in the $CH_4$ conversion. Addition of Ce to $Co/Al_2O_3$ and addition of La to $Ni/Al_2O_3$ a improved the $CH_4$ conversion level and $H_2$ selectivity.
We investigate the exchange bias effect in $[Pd/Co]_5$ superlattice structures which are representative system of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We fabricate Si/$[Pd/Co]_5$/FeMn structures, and study the exchange bias variations by measuring hysteresis loop variations with thickness of FeMn layer. In order to optimize the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, we fix the thickness of Pd with 1.1 nm and investigate the dependence of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy on the ferromagnetic Co layer thickness. As results, we find that the biggest coercivity in 0.3 nm of Co layer without FeMn layer. The biggest exchange bias field is found for 0.3 nm of Co layer when we change the Co thickness with fixed FeMn thickness. When we vary thickness of FeMn layer, the biggest coercivity is found for 5 nm of FeMn layer. No exchange bias is observed when the FeMn layer is thinner than 3 nm, and the exchange bias field increases with FeMn layer thickness continuously up to 15 nm.
The gamma-ray shielding effects of magnetite concretes have been measured using a broad beam Co-60 gamma-ray source. Mathematical formulae for a trans-mission ratio-to-shield thickness relation were derived from the attenuation curve obtained experimentally and are I (x) = I (ο) exp(-$\mu$X) exp(1.03$\times$10$^{-1}$ X-3.38$\times$10$^{-3}$ X$^2$+5.29$\times$10$^{-5}$ X$^3$) when X< 20 cm, I (x) =I (ο) exp(-$\mu$X) exp(4.66$\times$10$^{-2}$ X+2.12$\times$10$^{-1}$ ) when X>20 cm. Here I (x) is radiation intensity after passing through a thickness X of absorber, I(o) is the initial radiation intensity, $\mu$ is the linear attenuation coefficient of magnetite concrete and is given by (0.0532$\rho$+ 0.0083)$^{4)}$$cm^{-1}$ / in accordance with an earlier study, and X is the thickness of absorber. In addition, a model shield which is a rectangular magnetite concrete box with walls of 8cm thickness walls and internal demensions of 40$\times$40$\times$40 cm was constructed and its shielding effect has been measured. The emergent radiation flux appears to be greater with this configuration than with a slab shield of equal thickness.
Separation and determinations of Co(II) and Ni(II) ions as their 4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol(PAR) chelates by reversed-phase capillary high-performance liquid chromatography(RP-CpHPLC) were performed. Among many capillary columns, Vydac C4 column was selected and acetonitrile solution was used as mobile phase. The effect of pH and MeCN concentration(%) on the retention factor, k and peak intensity was examined and discussed. As a results, it was found that 22.5% MeCN and pH 5.60 was adequate as mobile phase for the separation of the two metal ions and determination of Co(II) ion, but the mobile phase condition for Ni(II) ion determination was 22.5% MeCN of pH 7.20. Detection limit(D.L., S/N=3) of Co(II) and Ni(II) ions were $2.0{\times}10{-7}$ M(14.9 ppb) and $1.0{\times}10{-6}$ M(59.2 ppb), respectively.

The buffer capacity of food waste lowers during the collecting and transportation period. Food waste usually shows deficiency of micro nutrients especially molybdenum(Mo) and cobalt(Co). Therefore, food waste can be considered as a good mixture of livestock waste to enhance methane production. The objective of this study was to investigate the correlation between properties of substrates (local food waste and livestock manure) and methane yields for successive anaerobic fermentation process and its stable management. Food wastes were taken at an intermediate storage or treatment system provided by eight local authorities (Gangnam, Gangdong, Gwanak, Guro, Dongjak, Songpa, Yeongdeungpo, and Younsan) in Seoul. The solid content and potential methane yield of food wastes were average of 16% and $446.6STP-m{\ell}/g-VS$ (range from 334.8 to $567.5STP-m{\ell}/g-VS$) respectively. As for the beef cattle manure, the solid content and potential methane yield had an average of 26% and $280.6STP-m{\ell}/g-VS$ respectively. Potential methane yield had a positive correlation with fat content, and hydrogen content and a negative correlation with carbohydrate content ($r^2>0.8$). Therefore, the potential methane yield can be predicted based on the substrate characterization results with reasonable accuracy. Further research may be needed to investigate the relation of the properties of the mixture substrate and methane production rate. The mixtures may include food waste, livestock waste, and bulking agents (saw dust, rice hull, or agricultural byproducts etc.) to determine best combination of these substrates for maximum methane production rate.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of magnetic field on cellular activity of MC3T3-E1 cells. The cellular activity was monitored by alkaline phosphatase and DNA synthetic activity in control, static magnetic field and pulsed electromagnetic field groups. A static magnetic field was applied to the cell by placing one, two, three, foue, and five samarium-cobalt magnets above and below each cell plate for 24hours per day. A pulsed electromagnetic field with a frequency of 100 herz was applied for 10 hours per day. After 10 days of magnetic field exposure, there were increase of alkaline phosphatase activity in static magnetic field groups consisted of one, two and three magnetic groups. Alkaline phosphatase activities were not significantly increased in four and five magnetic groups. Application of pulsed electromagnetic field did not result in significant increase in alkaline phosphatase activity compared to control. DNA synthetic activity in both static and pulsed electromagnetic field group were not significantly different from that in control group. The result of this study suggest that magnetic field could have effect on the metabolism of bone cells related to the cellular metabolic process.
