The synthesis of poly(ether)tailed bipyridine complex as redox reaction probes has advanced attempts to interpret very slow diffusion and heterogeneous electron transfer. Diffusion coefficients as low as $1.5{\times}10^{-15}cm^2/s$ have been observed for the oxidation of neat $Co(bpy(ppgm)_2)_{3^-}(ClO_4)_2$ with $LiClO_4$ electrolyte. Heterogeneous electron transfer rate constants of materials were found to vary with diffusion coefficient. The decrease in k as the diffusion coefficient decreases was actually caused by the decreasing D. Diffusion coefficient for compound of strong ion pairing anion($ClO{_4}^-$) was much smaller than the diffusion coefficient for compound of weak ion pairing anion($CF_3COO^-$).
A new method of cobalt determination has been developed by employing ethylenediamine tetrabutyl acetate(EDTA-butyl ester) synthesized from EDTA and Butyl alcohol. The synthesized EDTA ester dissolved in butyl alcohol extracts various metal ions from aqueous solutions. Cobaltous ion extracted into organic phase containing EDTA ester to form Co (II)-EDTA butyl ester complex is back extracted into alkaline aqueous phase forming a stable pink colored complex of Co (III). The optimum condition for spectrophotometric determination of cobalt via the new complex has been established. The absorption peak occurs at 540$m{\mu}$ and Beer's law was obeyed over the concentration range of 0∼50 ${\mu}g/ml$ of cobalt.
The objective of this investigation is to establish the rejection characteristics of caesium and cobalt from radioactive liquid waste by chemical/ultrafiltration process. An extensive experimental investigation was conducted with inactive caesium and cobalt ions, utilizing ultrafiltration stirred cell. Caesium and cobalt could be effectively removed from waste solution using copper ferrocyanide and polyarcylic acid(PAA). The rejection dependence of the caesium was found to be a function of caesiun to potassium copper ferrocyanide feed molar ratio. The binding behavior of caesium on K$_2$Cu$_3$(Fe(CN)$\sub$6/)$_2$, particles was explained in terms of a Langmuir adsorption isotherm. When Cs/K$_2$Cu$_3$(Fe(CN)$\sub$6/)$_2$molar ratio was 1.5, the removal of caesium was the most efficient. The rejection efficiency of cobalt is dependent upon various parameters such as pH, cobalt concentration and PAA concentration. The rejection behavior of cobalt was explained in term of a equilibrium model taking into account the reaction between the ligand group, the proton and the cobalt ion. At the conditions of PAA/Co ratio of 2 and pH of 5.6, the removal of cobalt was over 90%. Also, the effect of chemical addition sequence for the simultaneously removal of caesiun and cobalt was discussed.
Acicular ${\gamma}-Fe_{2}O_{3}$ particles were heated at $90^{\circ}C$ in alkaline solution containing mixed solution of dyadic metal with $Co^{+2}/Fe^{+2}$ ratio of 0.5. When cobalt content was increased, the coercivity of resultant product increased linearly, and surface area decreased. The cobalt ferrite was grown epitaxially on the surface ${\gamma}-Fe_{2}O_{3}$ crystal, and the increase of coercivity was attributed to the crystalline magnetic anisotropy of the cobalt ferrite which is conform to coating layer. We can expect superior magnetic properties above normal ratio of 2. The progress of reaction has an effect on coercivity of cobalt ferrite epitaxial iron oxide. The stability of temperature and the change om standin& of $Co-{\gamma}-Fe_{2}O_{3}$ was largely influenced by the composition of coating layer.
Co(II) complexes with tridentate Schiff base-NOIPH and tetradentate Schiff base-$NOTDH_2$ and $TNBPH_4$ were synthesized. The redox process of the complexes in DMF solution containing 0.1M TBAP was investigated at glassy carbon electrode by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry techniques. Reduction step of [Co(II)$(NOIP)_2$] and [Co(II)$(H_2O)_2$] complexes were observed in two step as one electron process of irreversible or quasi-reversible and diffusion-controlled reaction. [$Co(II)_2$(TNBP)] complex was observed in one step as one electron process of quasi-reversible and diffusion-controlled reaction.
Ultrafine cobalt-substituted iron oxide particles were prepared by the thermal decomposition and oxidation of the new organometallic precursor, $Co_xFe_{1-x}(N_2H_3COO)_2(N_2H_4)_2$ (x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.05, 0.10, 1.00). The organometallic precursors were synthesized by the reaction of Co(II) and Fe(II) ion in a mole ratio of x : 1-x with hydrazinocarboxylic acid, and characterized by quantitative analysis, elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The mechanistic study on the thermal decomposition of the organometallic precursors was performed by TG-DTG and DSC. The cobalt-substituted iron oxide particles were obtained by the heat treatment of the precursors at $350^{\circ}C$ and $450^{\circ}C$ for six hours in air. The prepared iron oxide was found to have two phases such as ${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$ and a mixture of ${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3\;and\;{\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ at $350^{\circ}C$ and $450^{\circ}C$ respectively. The particle shape was equiaxial and the particle size was less than 0.05 ${\mu}m.$ The coercivity and squareness of the cobalt substituted iron oxide particles increased with increasing cobalt content. Both coercivity and squareness showed higher values at $450^{\circ}C.$
The opaque porcelain layer of porcelain-fused-to-metal(PFM) restoration is critical for the success of PFM restoration because it is the first layer placed over the treated alloy. But, the methods of opaquing technique have not been confirmed. Usually, the one layer method and two layer method have been used for the application of opaque porcelain. In the past, alloys with porcelain veneers which have been used successfully have contained various precious metals. Recent increase in the cost of precious metals stimulates considerable interest in nonprecious alloys. Although nickel-chromium alloys and nickel-chromium-beryllium alloys have been widely used, the use of cobalt-chromium alloys would be gradually increased with elimination of any potential risk of nickel-related allergic responses and/or beryllium-related toxic responses. This investigation examined one- and two-layer opaque porcelain applications to determine the effect on the bond strength of titanium added cobalt-chromium metal ceramic alloy. Bond strength of Ceramco II porcelain to titanium added cobalt-chromium alloy(2Dentitan) and gold-platinum-palladium alloy(Degudent H) were evaluated by direct shear bond strength test with Instron universal testing machine. The results were as follows; 1. When the mean shear bond strength of each experimental group were compared in $0.25cm^2$ unit area, the titanium added cobalt-chromium alloy/two layer method exhibited the greatest strength(79.7kg), followed by titanium added cobalt-chromium alloy/one layer method(76.2kg), gold-platinum-palladium alloy/two layer method(71.4kg), gold-platinum-palladium alloy/one layer method(64.2kg). 2. No significant differences in bond strength were recorded between the two opaquing techniques for gold-platinum-palladium alloy and titanium added cobalt-chromium alloy. 3. No significant differences in bond strength were recorded between the gold-platinum-palladium alloy and the titanium added cobalt-chromium alloy.
This study was undertaken to compare the histopathological effects of the fractionated doses of 2,400, 4,800 and 7,200 rads of Cobalt-60 irradiation on the teeth of the sixty eight rats (Wester strain), weighing approximately 130gm. They were devided into four groups; no irradiation as a control (Group I) and others (Group II, III, and IV) which received different doses of radiation using 1.25 Mev RAC-120 Cobalt-60 Teletherapy Unit with exposure dose rate 69 rads/min, TSD 80cm. Experimental animals received 600 rads every three days until the total dosage of their groups were reached. Experimental animals were sacrified at the 1st day, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th week irradiation. The following histopathologic findings were obtained: 1. The Group II, received 2,400 rads, showed no histopamologic changes essentially same as those of the control Group. 2. In the Groups III and IV, received 4,800 rads and 7,200 rads, disarray of the normal palasading arrangement of the odontoblastic cells, vacuolar degeneration in the odontoblastic layer, osteodentin and dentinal niches in the anterior teeth were observed. 3. There were no distinct changes in the posterior teeth in the Groups III and IV. 4. The ameloblast cells seemed to be less sensitive to radiation damage than the odontoblast cells.
Novel coordination polymers of general form $[Co(NCS)_2(Py_2L)_2]_n\; (Py_2L=trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene$ (bpee), 1; 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpea), 2) have been synthesized by slow diffusion of aqueous solution of $Co(NCS)_2$ with ethanolic solution of appropriate spacer ligand, $Py_2L$, in a mole ratio of 1 : 2. X-ray analyses on both 1 and 2 have provided similar unit and infinite structures with space group Ibam. The local geometry around the cobalt(Ⅱ) atoms is an octahedral arrangement with two NCS groups in trans position (N-Co-N, 180.0° (1); 180.0°(2)) and four pyridine units in propeller fashion. Each spacer ligand connects two cobalt(Ⅱ) ions defining the edges of a $[Co(II)]_4$ rhombus. The most fascinating feature is the occurrence of perpendicular interwoven of independent square grid sheets: this is, one molecular network is perpendicularly interpenetrated through the centers of the $[Co(II)]_4$ rhombuses of another independent network with all of the cobalt(Ⅱ) atoms in a coplanar sheet. The physicochemical properties of the present unique structures were studied.
Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), developed two decades ago, are considered to be an attractive technology among various photovoltaic devices because of their low cost, accessible dye chemistry, ease of fabrication, high power conversion efficiency, and environmentally friendly nature. A typical DSSCs consists of a dye-coated $TiO_2$ photoanode, a redox electrolyte, and a platinum (Pt)-coated fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) counter electrode. Among them, redox electrolytes have proven to be extremely important in improving the performance of DSSCs. Due to many drawbacks of iodide electrolytes, many research groups have paid more attention to seeking other alternative electrolyte systems. With regard to this, one-electron outer sphere redox shuttles based on cobalt complexes have shown promising results: In 2014, porphyrin dye (SM315) with the cobalt (II/III) redox couple exhibited a power conversion efficiency of 13% in DSSCs. In this review, we will provide an overview and perspectives of cobalt redox electrolytes in DSSCs.
