  • In this study, the prediction on the quality of tools after coating process has been investigated. Under different coating conditions, cutting resistances have been obtained and analyzed with a tool dynamometer to provide optimized coating conditions. The optimized coating condition has been computed with the most effective factors found by S/N ratio of Taguchi method. To evaluate the influence of the factors on cutting efficiency through the minimum of number of experiment times, the way of neural network design using Taguchi method has been employed.

  • The impact of PVD coatings can be summed up in practical terms: this technology historically complements the best designed tool substrates to enhance cutting performance. PVD coatings are now incorporated in 25% of all HSS tools. The functionality is to extend the machining speed range, improve wear resistance at the cutting edge, and reduce friction at chip/tool contact areas to allow easier chip evacuation. These translate to a larger safe zone, as discussed in the failure mode diagram, for better productivity and higher reliability in machining operations of the customer. PVD coatings therefore represent an enabling technology that extends the application range of cutting tools in response to modern industrial needs. PVD coatings prolong the product life cycle of HSS tools and help this "mature" material to hold its territory against the advent of the newer hardmetal and ceramic tool materials. There is a lot of competitive life left particularly in PVD coated HSS endmills, drills, threading/tapping tools. PM HSS technology further increases the possibilities.ibilities.

  • Temperature variation happens in micro prism roll mold processing system during machining the prism pattern roll mold using manufacturing optical films of LCD (liquid crystal display). This temperature variation induces pitch errors of the prism patterns. The temperature variation displaces the positions of the diamond cutting tool on the roll which was coated by the copper. In order to prevent the pitch errors, the stabilizing the temperature of machining environment is needed. Therefore, the researching on the temperature variation of the ultra-precision roll mold processing system on the machining of micro prism rot 1 mold is needed. In this paper, the temperature variation of micro prism roll mold processing system is researched, the influence is analyzed, and the study for reducing the pitch errors carried out.

  • In this study, we carried out the interrupted cutting of carbon steel for a machine structure (SM45C) with a CVD-coated tool and conducted an ANOVA test and a confidence interval analysis to find factors influence the surface roughness and to obtain a regression equation. We found that factor which mostly affects the surface roughness during interrupted cutting was the feed rate. The cutting speed and depth of the cut only had small effect on the surface roughness. From the result of a multi-regression analysis during an interrupted cutting experiment, we obtained regression equation. Its coefficient of determination was 0.918, indicating that the regression equation was predictable. Compared to continuous cutting, if the feed rate increases, the surface roughness will also increase during interrupted cutting.

  • This study conducted the wear tests on bending punches coated with PVD CrN and examined the surface quality of the product formed by each punch in the forming of uncoated TRIP1180 sheets. The study quantitatively estimated the surface quality of the product by measuring the roughness and imaging the product surface. The correlation between the punch wear depth and the product surface roughness was quantitatively analyzed. The results showed that before failure occurs, the product roughness was comparable with that of the as-received, and the product surface was smooth without scratches and defects. However, after failure, the punch wear is caused by fretting wear mechanism, and a punch whose coating is not completely peeled plows the product surface, resulting in severe scratches with grooves and ridges on the product surface. Severe wear on the punch surface caused by fretting wear can rapidly degrade the product surface quality as it is directly affected by the punch surface condition, and the product surface quality accurately reflects the punch wear condition.

  • An experimental investigation of the machining characteristics such as cutt- ing resistance, surface roughness and tool wear in turning the test pieces of SM45C steel with both coated and uncoated carbide tool tips under various cutting conditions was conducted. Also a specially designed simple vibration damping device was experimentally evaluated for its effectiveness on machined surface roughness and a vibration test was conducted to confirm its ability to reduce the amplitude. Based on these tests finding, the following conclusions are made; 1. The cutting resistance($\textrm{p}_{1}$) increases as the depth of cut(d) increases at fixed feed rate(f) over the cutting speed(v) range of 43-226 m/min and p decreses about 18% average when V is increased for fixed d and f. At V= 226m/min, $\textrm{p}_{1}$/for A, C tips are about the same level but $\textrm{p}_{1}$ for B tip is 15% less than A, C tips. 2. The specific cutting resistance(Ks) at V=226 m/min was derived for A, B, C tips respectively and the value of Ks for B rip is about 20% less than A, C tips. 3. The surface roughness(Ra) improves significantly as the cutting speed(V) is increased and this effect was greater when V>100 m/min. On the other hand, Ra deteriorates as the feed rate(f) is increased and this trend was accelerated when f>0.3 mm/rev. With regard to the difference of Ra values among A, B, C tips, at V=226m/min, d=0.4mm, and f=0.31-0.61mm/rev, Ra values for B.C tips are about 17% less than tip A. 4. The experimental tool wear equations were derived for A, B, C tips and from these equations, the tool life($\textrm{T}_{\textrm{L}}$) baced on the I.S.O. criteria was calculated to be $\textrm{T}_{\textrm{L}}$<$\textrm{T}_{\textrm{LB}}$<$\textrm{T}_{\textrm{LC}}$ for both flank wear($\textrm{V}_{\textrm{B}}$) and boundary wear($\textrm{V}_{\textrm{N}}$). Hence, the coated tips are superior to the uncoated tip and tip C is considered to be the best. 5. The cutting resistance may be slightly reduced and the surface rounghness improved when the damper is used especially when V>100 m/min. Therefore this damping device is considered to be effective and practical. The experimental surface roughness equations were also derived. Based on the vibration test, it is established that the surface roughness improvement was the result of amplitude reduction made possible by the damper.

  • This article presents machining experiments to assess the relationship between the profile accuracy and the workpiece hardness using a natural diamond tool on an ultra-precision diamond turning machine. The study is intended to secure a corner cube prism pattern for reflective film capable of high-quality outcomes. The optical performance levels and edge images of corner cubes having various hardness levels of the copper-coated layer on a carbon steel plate are analyzed. The hardness of the workpiece has a considerable effect on the profile accuracy. The higher the hardness of the workpiece, the better the profile accuracy and the worse the edge wear of the diamond tool.

  • This research conducted milling tests to study effects of cutting environment conditions of ball end mills on the characteristics of hard milling process. KP4 steels and STD11 heat treated steels were used as the workpiece and WC-Co ball end mill tools with TiAIN coated were utilized in the cutting tests. Dry cutting without coolant and semi-dry cutting using botanical oil coolant were conducted and MQL (Minimum Quantity Lubricant) device was used to spray coolant. Cutting forces, tool wear and surface roughness were measured in the cutting tests. Results showed that dry cutting of KP4 and hardened STD11 specimens produced better surface quality and wear performance than MQL spray cutting did.

  • Metalworking fluids (MWFs) are fluids used during machining and grinding to prolong the life of the tool , carry away debris, and protect the surfaces of work pieces. These fluids reduce friction between the cutting tool and the work surface, reduce wear and galling, Protect surface characteristics, reduce surface adhesion or welding and carry away generated heat. Workers can be exposed to MWFs by inhaling aerosols (mists) and by skin contact with the fluid. Skin contact occurs by dipping the hands into the fluid, splashes, or handling workpieces coated with the fluids. The amount of mist generated (and the result ins level of exposure) depends on many factors. To reduce the potential health risks associated with occupational exposures to MWFs, it is required to establish optimum MWFs supply method and condition with minimum Quantity in all over the mechanical machining field including high speed type heavy cult ing process.
