  • Background: In the Philippines, the practice of planting mangroves over seagrass has been a practice done to promote coastline protection from damages done by storms. Despite the added protection to the coastline, the addition of an artificial ecosystem gradually inflicts damage to the ecosystem already established. In this study, seagrass communities that had no history of mangrove planting were compared with those that had mangrove planting. The percent substrate cover of seagrass in the sampling areas was determined, and the macroinvertebrates present in the sampling areas were also observed. The study was conducted based on reports of mangrove planting activity that disrupted seagrass functions on Santa Fe, Bantayan Island, Cebu. Transect-quadrat method sampling was done to assess the chosen sites. Results: Six species of seagrass was found on the site without mangrove planting which was barangay Ocoy (Cymodocea sp., Thalassia sp., Halodule sp., Enhalus sp., Halophila sp., and Syringodium sp.) and had a higher percent cover, while only four were found on the site with mangrove planting (barangay Marikaban). It was also found that barangay Marikaban had a lesser Shannon-Wiener and Simpson's index compared to barangay Ocoy. Jaccard's index of similarity between the two sites was low. Conclusion: With the results of the assessment, we recommend proper monitoring of future mangrove planting activities and that these activities should not disrupt another ecosystem as all ecosystems are important.

  • We conducted field surveys of amphibians and reptiles over a two-year period in 16 lagoons along the eastern coastline of South Korea, and determined the habitat characteristics correlated with the number of amphibian and reptilian species and individuals. We documented 11 amphibian species and 8 reptilian species. The dominant amphibian species was the black-spotted pond frog (Rana nigromaculata), and the dominant reptilian species was the red-eared turtle (Trachemys scripta elegans), an invasive species. Among the 14 habitat characteristics, connectivity to mountainous area significantly affected the number of amphibian and reptilian individuals. Other factors, including emerged plant cover, salinity, pH, the number of birds for amphibians and connectivity to agricultural land, lagoon perimeter length for reptiles also influenced the number of species or individuals of them. Our results demonstrate that these lagoons are home to more amphibians and reptiles than has been previously known. To effectively conserve herpetofauna in the lagoon ecosystem, lagoons as well as surrounding wetlands, grasslands, and mountainous areas should be protected.

  • This research aims to analyze spectral reflectance of intertidal zone and its changes under various environmental conditions. We sampled sand of Mongsanpo tidal flat, Korea, and measured its spectral reflectance by using a spectroradiometer under various water contents, compositions and granularity. We also simulated the reflectance of Landsat 7 ETM+ and compared it with an actual satellite data. Five locations were selected for sampling from the coastline towards the ocean. Grain size diminished stepwise from the coastline to ocean direction, while spectral reflectance differed with wavelength. Water contents lowered the overall reflectance especially at the water absorption bands. Spectral reflectance data were then converted into the simulated one by using Landsat 7 ETM+ spectral reflectance function to be compared with the actual Landsat 7 ETM+ images. It showed the decrease of the spectral reflectance due to the increase of moisture contents from seashore towards the ocean. It is shown that Landsat 7 ETM+ imagery can be efficient to extract moisture contents in the tidal flat while compositional analysis needs satellite sensors with much higher spectral resolution.

  • In order to identify clay minerals in the soft ground, which has been deposited along the coastline of the Korean peninsula, 14 samples have been taken at different locations and then X-ray diffraction analysis is carried out for them. It is known from the analysis that the various kinds of clay minerals mixed with different portions exist in the soft ground, but halloysite is not traced in any samples. It is featured regionally that kaolinite and illite are found in the western coast and the southern coast. Montmorillonites exists only in the western coast. This feature of regional occurrences can be explained with the help of geology of the region. Activities determined from physical properties of the soils do not coincide with those of clay minerals identified from X-ray diffraction analysis.

  • A meteo-tsunami occurred along the coastline of South Korea on 31 March 2007, with an estimated maximum amplitude of 240 cm in Yeonggwang (YG). In this study, we investigated the synoptic weather systems around the Yellow sea including the Bohai Bay and Shandong Peninsula using a weather research and forecast model and weather charts of the surface pressure level, upper pressure level and auxiliary analysis. We found that 4-lows passed through the Yellow sea from the Shandung Peninsula to Korea during 5 days. Moreover, the passage of the cold front and the locally heavy rain with a sudden pressure change may make the resonance response in the near-shore and ocean with a regular time-lag. The sea-level pressure disturbance and absolute vorticity in 500 hPa projected over the Yellow sea was propagated with a similar velocity to the coastline of South Korea at the time that meteo-tsunami occurred.

  • Collected and analyzed the coastal processes at the estuary of Nak-Dong river and its near coastal area from the history of field measurements. Introduced a numerical model to predict three dimensional topographical change which are evaluated from the nearshore wave and the wave induced current fields for the objective area, and later it were related to the development of beach and shoals. With the comparison between measured and calculated, we found that the changes on the coastline and sand spit and bar development are induced not only by artificial forces due to the construction of river dike, but also by the strong impact of wave induced current. In future days, it is expected that coastline change and sand bar development at the lee side of Jinwoo-Deung and at the front of Dadae beach.

  • The world's first geostationary ocean color imager (GOCI) is a three-mirror anastigmat optical system 140 mm in diameter. Designed for 500 m ground sampling distance, this paper deals with on-orbit modulation transfer function (MTF)measurement and analysis for GOCI. First, the knife-edge and point source methods were applied to the 8th band (865 nm) image measured April 5th, 2011. The target details used are the coastlines of the Korean peninsula and of Japan, and an island 400 meters in diameter. The resulting MTFs are 0.35 and 0.34 for the Korean East Coastline and Japanese West Coastline edge targets, respectively, and 0.38 for the island target. The daily and seasonal MTF variations at the Nyquist frequency were also checked, and the result is $0.32{\pm}0.04$ on average. From these results, we confirm that the GOCI on-orbit MTF performance satisfies the design requirements of 0.32 for 865 nm wavelength.

  • Monitoring the location of the shoreline and foreshore changes through the time and core tasks are carried out by coastal engineers for a wide range of research. With the advent of digital imaging technology, the shore-based video monitoring system provides many advantages than field surveys. This study presents the development and construction(installation) of video monitoring system to assist the study of coastal and shoreline dynamics and evolution, especially sandbar variation at the Nakdong river estuary. For the purpose of this study, at high building near the Dadea-po beach (St. 2) and Jinudo(island) (St. 1) foreshore region, where coastline variation is highly active, 5 video cameras installed; the coastline movement has monitored since Aug. 2007 using the systems. From the image results of video camera, the 'Spit' type sandbar appears at the foreshore region of Doyodeung and Dadea-po beach and measured the deposition process of Jinudo(island) foreshore region. As a result, the monitoring system using video-based technique built in this study would be able to identify changes in the area and width of shoreline and beach of Nakdong river estuary.

  • The approaching deep water wave heights and directions affect the wave energy which is carried to the coast. By studing the relations between the longshore wave energy theory and the evolution of coastline, writer can arrive following conclusion. The longshore lottoral drifting affects to a great deal the formation of the coast, and by investigating on the eastern coastal geomophorogy of korea, the theory was proued as a true and made it possible to an approaching to the subdivided classification of eastern coast of lorea. That is to asy that angle taken by the level between the wave crest line of prevailing wave(NE) and the coastline was measured as less than 15#, and in the area neighboring the river which served as source of Sand parrticles, there are grand scale formation of sand beach expectable, in the other hand the formation of sand beach in case of $35^{\circ}{\leq}{\alpha }o{\leq}55^{\circ}$ which represents the vivid phenomena of longshore littoral drifting was proved not influencial but rather transformed into a rocky coast. Depending on the above facts the writer classified general shape of the coast affected by the vivid wave action into the following three, (1) The equilibrium beach. (2) Erosinal beach. (3) Geomophorogical beach, and made the sandy and rocky coast are subdivided as S-A.B.C. and R-DEF.

  • The Remote Sensing Group of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) has acquired SAR data of the Central Cebu Island for its research study area. The MGB is one of the proponent of DOST-NASA PACRIM II Project, which is composed of eleven (11) agencies and institutions in the Philippines, that focuses on the scientific application of radar data with the theme on hazard and natural resources management. The PACRIM II Project, being done on three-year term, is slated for completion in the year 2004. The main thrust of the project study of the MGB is the baseline environmental monitoring studies, on which the data are to be fused with some other available data from LandSAT and photogrammetry. The generated data is part of the information for the update of thematic mapping being done. The 12 ${\times}$ 60 km swath AirSAR data covers the Central Cebu Island. The highlights of conducting this research project are: Extent of Watershed Basin boundaries - identification of the tributaries that drain water supply to the metropolitan area; Monitoring of the mountain highways - identification of landslide risk prone sites as part of natural hazard monitoring on a national highway that cuts along the mountainous areas; and Coastline change assessment - monitoring the coastline activities relative to the rapid urbanization and exposure as part of coastal management. The Phase 1 of this report discusses the fusion with the ArcView generated data as baseline studies on the monitoring activities.
