Modification of Sea Water Temperature by Wind Driven Current in the Mountainous Coastal Sea

  • Numerical simulation on marine wind and sea surface elevation was carried out using both three-dimensional hydrostatic and non-hydrostatic models and a simple oceanic model from 0900 LST, August 13 to 0900 LST, August 15, 1995. As daytime easterly meso-scale sea-breeze from the eastern sea penetrates Kangnung city in the center part as basin and goes up along the slope of Mt. Taegullyang in the west, it confronts synoptic-scale westerly wind blowing over the top of the mountain at the mid of the eastern slope and then the resultant wind produces an upper level westerly return flow toward the East Sea. In a narrow band of weak surface wind within 10km of the coastal sea, wind stress is generally small, less than l${\times}$10E-2 Pa and it reaches 2 ${\times}$ 10E-2 Pa to the 35 km. Positive wind stress curl of 15 $\times$ 10E-5Pa $m^{-1}$ still exists in the same band and corresponds to the ascent of 70 em from the sea level. This is due to the generation of northerly wind driven current with a speed of 11 m $S^{-1}$ along the coast under the influence of south-easterly wind and makes an intrusion of warm waters from the southern sea into the northern coast, such as the East Korea Warm Current. On the other hand, even if nighttime downslope windstorm of 14m/s associated with both mountain wind and land-breeze produces the development of internal gravity waves with a hydraulic jump motion of air near the coastal inland surface, the surface wind in the coastal sea is relatively moderate south-westerly wind, resulting in moderate wind stress. Negative wind stress curl in the coast causes the subsidence of the sea surface of 15 em along the coast and south-westerly coastal surface wind drives alongshore south-easterly wind driven current, opposite to the daytime one. Then, it causes the intrusion of cold waters like the North Korea Cold Current in the northern coastal sea into the narrow band of the southern coastal sea. However, the band of positive wind stress curl at the distance of 30km away from the coast toward further offshore area can also cause the uprising of sea waters and the intrusion of warm waters from the southern sea toward the northern sea (northerly wind driven current), resulting in a counter-clockwise wind driven current. These clockwise and counter-clockwise currents much induce the formation of low clouds containing fog and drizzle in the coastal region.

Association between Low-level Mercury Exposure and Neurobehavioral Functions in Korean Adults Living in a Coastal City

  • Objectives The aim of this study was to determine the association between low-level mercury exposure and neurobehavioral functions in adults living in coastal regions of Korea. Methods We selected 172 adults aged 20-65 years living in a city in the coastal region of Korea. A sociodemographic survey was conducted, mercury levels in the blood, urine, and hair were measured, and the associations according to computerized neurobehavioral tests were determined using univariate analysis. After adjustment for associated variables, a multivariate linear regression analysis was performed. Results The geometric mean mercury levels in the blood, urine, and hair were $5.41{\mu}g/L$ (range, $0.00-15.84{\mu}g/L$), $1.17{\mu}g/g$-creatinine (range, $0.00-32.86{\mu}g/g$-creatinine), and 1.37 mg/kg (range, 0.42-6.56 mg/kg), respectively. Variables that were associated with simple reaction time according to the neurobehavioral test results were age and urine mercury level. Variables associated with choice reaction time were the recent use of Korean traditional medicine and urine mercury level. Variables associated with the right-hand finger tapping speed test were age, gender, smoking behavior, education level, monthly household income, and urine mercury level. Variables associated with the left-hand finger tapping speed test were age, gender, education level, and urine mercury level. After adjustment for associated variables, there was no significant association between urine mercury level and simple reaction time (${\beta}=25.96$; p =0.47), choice reaction time (${\beta}=50.37$; p =0.32), or the number of left-hand finger taps (${\beta}=-1.54$; p =0.21). However, urine mercury level was significantly associated with the number of right-hand finger taps (${\beta}=-3.86$; p =0.01). Conclusions We found no evidence that low-level mercury exposure in adults is associated with deficits in neurobehavioral functions. A longer follow-up study is required to confirm this conclusion.

부산광역시 해안사구의 식물다양성과 식생 특성 (Studies on the Characteristics of Vegetation and Plant Diversity of Coastal Sand Dune in Busan Metropolitan City)

  • 해안사구는 해양생태계와 내륙생태계의 전이대적인 성격을 가지고 있으며 풍부한 생물다양성을 내재하고 있지만, 간척, 매립, 관광객 증가 등의 서식처 교란으로 인해 고유생태계가 크게 훼손되고 있다. 본 연구는 부산광역시의 7개 해수욕장에서 식물상, 식생을 조사하고 경관구조를 분석하였다. 그 결과, 부산시 해안사구의 관속식물상은 57과 140속 162종 15변종 1품종의 178분류군으로 확인되었다. 7개 해수욕장 중 4개(57%)에서 자연식생이 전혀 발견되지 않을 정도로 식생경관이 훼손되어 있었다. 해안사구식생은 좀보리사초군락, 통보리사초군락이 우점하였다. 염생식물과 귀화식물은 각각 18분류군(전체 출현종 10%), 40분류군(전체의 22%)이었다. 가장 넓은 면적을 이루는 식생은 염습지의 갈대군락이었고, 염생식물 종수는 습지면적이 증가함에 따라 증가하였다. 이것은 이 지역의 고유한 식물다양성을 유지하기 위해서는 염습지의 유지와 관리가 중요함을 뜻한다.

부산광역시 해안 무인도서의 보전(保全)과 활용 (Preservation and Utilitization of Uninhabited Islets in Busan Metropolitan City)

  • 목도의 지질조사가 한국 역사상 이번에 처음으로 수행되었다. 목도가 중생대 말기 약$7,000{\sim}8,000$만년 전에 성층화산으로 분출하여 화산원형이 개석됨으로서 현재는 Planeze 단계를 지나 골격단계에 이른 것으로 밝혀졌다. 추후에 정밀조사를 한다면 분화구 자리도 찾아질 수 있을 것이다. 목도에는 50m고도에 해성단구면이 있다. 이는 제4단구면에 대비되고 홍적세 후기에 생성된 것으로 추정된다. 목도의 해안에 발달한 해안의 미지형으로는 해안단구, 해식애, 해식동, 파식대, 해안석주, 낭식장, 타포니(풍화혈) 등이 발견되었다. 목도는 산경도(山徑圖)에 표시되어 있는 낙동정맥의 남방 연장선 위 몰운대 앞바다에 위치하며 "물에 뜬 거북이"형국(부해금귀형(浮海金龜形)) 혹은 "물에서 나오고 있는 거북이"형국(출수금귀형(出水金龜形))이다. 목도의 도서명은 그 정체성을 위하여 "유구도"(游龜島) "남구도"(南龜島) "회구도"(廻龜島)중에서 선택하여 개칭할 필요가 있다. 목도는 부산의 관광수요를 위한 새로운 관광명소로 발전, 개발되는데 필요한 관광자연배경을 충분히 가지고 있으며, 앞으로 이 무인도서가 분산의 등대섬, 그리고 유,무인도서라 연계하여 해양관광을 개발한다면 새로운 관광지로서 행양수도발전에 지대한 영향력을 가질 수 있다고 평가되었다. 목도의 주변해역에 해양수족관과 해초정원을 조성하고 수목원을 조성하며 기타 해양문화공간조성의 종합기본계획이 이 연구에서 완성되었다.

부산부청(釜山府廳)의 건축과정과 변용특성 (A Study on the Architectural Process and the Characteristic of Municipal Building in Busan)

  • The Municipal Building of Busan was the first western-style building of Korea in 1879. It was also the predecessor of Busan Metropolitan City Hall. On the other hand, the Municipal Building of Busan was a symbolic structure that shows the history of Busan. The Municipal Building of Busan has inherited the construction location and site, including the speciality of Choryangwaegwan, and is a good example of the process of inheriting the authority of the former space through the appropriation of the building. The Municipal Building of Busan was relocated to the edge of the coast in 1934 because a small and dilapidated building failed to function properly. The relocation of the Municipal Building of Busan in 1934 was the origin of changing the coastal space in downtown. As a result, landfill sites along the coast were in the limelight and developed into the downtown area of Busan after Korea's liberation.

철근콘크리트 구조물의 내구성 설계를 위한 비래염분 추정방법 (Estimation Method of Airborne Salinity for Durability Design of Reinforced Concrete Structure)

  • A comparative study of airborne salinity and sea wind was done for a coastal area, Sokcho city, of East Sea in Kangwon province, Korea. In this study, a relationship between the formation of airborne salinity and wind velocity was investigated, and then the airborne salinity was simulated and forecasted by the obtained wind-salinity characteristics. It is founded that most airborne salinity is brought by sea winds with the occurrence of velocity, higher than and equal to 4m/s, while the occurrence of lower wind velocities (ie., lower than 4m/s) in sea wind and the occurrence of inland wind give diluted effects on the airborne transfer. By using these characteristics and a proposed linear equation model, the salinity in Sokcho city is successfully simulated and forecasted. It is expected that the linear equation model may be useful for durability design of concrete structures under the conditions of chloride attack, induced by the airborne salinity.

  • The Swan Coastal Plain, on which the City of Perth (pop. 1.32 million) is situated, is formed of aeolian sands of Pleistocene-Recent age. The mainly unconsolidated sediments build a series of dune lines paralleling the coastline. The near-surface water-table sees expression in numerous shallow freshwater lakes and marshes in the interdunal depressions. Quantitative Accuracy Assessment of a SPOT DEM along the Coast-Donghae City Area

  • Quantitative accuracy assessment of a SPOT DEM (Digital Elevation Model) generated by a fully automatic software is performed along the 90km long coast around Donghae city. The theoretical requirement on the layout of the CPS (Global Positioning System) check points is derived: the Nyquist sampling. Since in practice the Nyquist frequency of a terrain is difficult to determine, the relaxed requirements are introduced and 31 check points are collected accordingly. Accuracy of the SPOT DEM is calculated to be 8.9, 11.5 and 12.0m r.m.s. in latitudinal, longitudinal and elevation directions. The bias is distinguishable from zero only for elevation and is 2.2m. The simple comparison with the world's leading commercial softwares reveals the similar accuracy level.

폭풍해일과 강우에 의한 해안 도시 범람 수치모의 (Numerical Simulation of Coastal Urban Inundation due to Storm Surge and Rainfall)

  • 본 연구에서는 태풍 매미에 의해 큰 피해를 입은 마산지역을 대상으로 폭풍해일과 강우에 의한 범람 수치모의를 수행하였다. 이를 위해 폭풍해일-강우-우수관망 결합 수치모형을 사용하였다. 그 결과, 기존의 폭풍해일만을 이용하였을 경우보다 강우와 우수관망 수치모형을 고려하였을 때의 침수면적 및 침수고가 크게 증가한 것을 확인하였다. 또한 마산시에서 추진 중인 방재언덕을 설치하였을 때의 침수범람결과를 추가적으로 수치모의 하여 방재언덕의 실효성을 검토하였다. 그 결과 방재언덕의 영향으로 폭풍해일에 의한 최대 침수심은 저감되었으나, 우수가지상부에서 바다로 원활하게 배수되지 못해 침수지속기간이 증가하는 것을 확인하였다.

속초연안에서 대기순환의 특성 (Characteristics of Atmospheric Circulation in Sokcho Coast)

  • Using three-dimensional non-hydrostatical numerical model with one way double nesting technique, atmo­spheric circulation in the mountainous coastal region in summer was investigated from August 13 through 15, 1995. During the day, synoptic westerly wind blows over Mt. Mishrung in the west of a coastal city, Sokcho toward the East Sea, while simultaneously, easterly upslope wind combined with both valley wind from plain (coast) toward mountain and sea-breeze from sea toward inland coast blows toward the top of the mountain. Two different directional wind systems confront each other in the mid of eastern slope of the mountain and the upslope wind goes up to the height over 2 km, becoming an easterly return flow in the upper level over the sea and making sea-breeze front with two kinds of sea-breeze circulations of a small one in the coast and a large one in the open sea. Convective boundary layer is developed with a thickness of about 1km over the ground in the upwind side of the mountain in the west and a thickness of thermal internal boundary layer from the coast along the eastern slope of the mountain is only confined to less than 200 m. On the other hand, after sunset, no prohibition of upslope wind generated during the day and downward wind combined with mountain wind from mountain towardplain and land-breeze from land toward under nocturnal radiative cooling of the ground surfaces should intensify westerly downslope wind, resulting in the formation of wind storm. As the wind storm moving down along the eastern slop causes the development of internal gravity waves with hydraulic jump motion in the coast, bounding up toward the upper level of the coastal sea, atmospheric circulation with both onshore and offshore winds like sea-breeze circulation forms in the coastal sea within 70 km until midnight and after that, westerly wind prevails in the coast and open seas.
