  • A study on the distribution and community structure of benthic molluscan shells of the northern coastal area in Cheju Island was carried out from July 1989 to June 1990. The benthic molluscan shells collected and identified were composed of 3 classes, 9 orders, 29 familes and 81 species. The first dominant species of the wpper intertidal zone of the northern coastal area in Cheju Island was Nodilittorina exigua and second dominant species were Heminerita japonica, Monodenta neritoides, Monodota neritoides, Littorina brevicula, those of middle intertidal zone were Lunella coronata coreensis, Monodonta neritoides and Omphalius rusticus. H. japonica, M. neritoides, O. rusticus, L. coronata coreensis and Niotha livescens were dominant in the lower intertidal zone, and Astralium haematragum was dominant in the infralittoral zone of within 60 feet sea water depth. The benthic molluscan standing biomass of intertidal and infralittoral zones were 145.71-705.55 gr/ /m sup 2 / and 84.57-1645.67 gr/m sup 2/ respectively, But thao among area and zones were apparently differences.

  • Two types of barge, container and tanker vessels, are designed with specific dimensions for canal-coastal shipping in Kyung-In canal and Yellow Sea region. The principal dimensions of barges are determined by considering the environment of Kyung-In canal and Yellow Sea. The selection of structure type and structure type and strength confirmation is conducted by the technical rules of Korean Register of Shipping. For the structural analysis of designed barges, the semi-direct stuctural analysis is carried out with using MSC NASTRAN software. Applying identical dimensions to both vessels, the standardization of structural design and analysis procedure are introduced.

  • This study describes a procedure of movable bed model tests and discusses the similitude with a view to state of the art. The prediction of littoral transport in the vicinity of coastal structure of nuclear power #9, 10 has been attempted. From the result of the present movable model study, it was found that the offshore breakwater is more excellent than the groyne and the rip-current barrier for the prevention against in take siltations and for the stability of investigated coastal structure of nuclear power plant.

  • The marine phytoplankton diatom Thalassiosira species are described from the Korean coastal waters, based onobservations of Fine structutre of its frustules. As a fourth series, this study deals with 5 Thlassiosira species (T. decip-iens, T. ecgentrica, T. mala, T. nodulolinmta, and T. proschinae). The most striking features of these species are also theform and position of two processes on frustules. There is a central strutted process on valve face except T. nodvlolin-eata, which has a modified one on its center. The extemal tubes of marginal strutted processes are divided twoforms: "pile" form in T. decipiens and T. proschkinae, "short straw" form in T. eccentrica and T. nodulolineata. T. maladoes not present the extemal tubes in valve margin. The labiate processes are located in valve margin except T.proschkinae, which has it on valve face. Of theae, thrce species (T. mala, T. nodulineata at a final contentration of 5%and T. proschkinae were newly recorded in the coastal waters of Korea.

  • This paper adopts the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) open-source code SPHinXsys to study the solitary wave interaction with coastal structures. The convergence properties of the model in terms of particle size and smoothing length are tested based on the example of solitary wave propagation in a flat-bottom wave flume. After that, the solitary wave interactions with a suspended submerged flat plate and deck with girders are studied. The wave profile and velocity field near the surface of the structures, as well as the wave forces exerted onto the structures are analyzed.
