To investigate the crushing behaviour of coarse granular materials, a specifically designed, large-scale simple shear apparatus with eight-staged shearing rings was developed. A series of monotonic simple shear tests were conducted on two kinds of coarse granular materials under different vertical stresses and large shear strains. The evolution of the particle breakage during the compression and simple shearing processes was investigated. The results show that the amount of particle breakage is related to the particle hardness and the state of the stresses. The amount of particle breakage is greater for softer granular materials and increases with increasing vertical stresses. Particle breakage may tend towards a critical value during both the compression and the shearing processes. Particle breakage mainly occurs during the processes of confined compression and contraction.
In the coarse grain HAZ adjacent to the fusion line, most of the TiN particles in conventional Ti added steel are dissolved and austenite grain growth is easily occurred during welding process. To avoid this difficulty, thermal stability of TiN particle is improved by increasing the nitrogen content in steel. In this study, the effect of hlgh nitrogen TiN particle on preventing austenite grain growth in HAZ was investigated. Increased thermal stability of TiN particle is helpful for preventing the austenite grain growth by pinning effect. High nitrogen TiN particle in simulated HAZ were not dissolved even at high temperature such as 1400'E and prevented the austenite grain growth in simulated HAZ. Owing to small austenite grain size in HAZ the width of coarse grain HAZ in high nitrogen TiN steel was decreased to 1/10 of conventional TiN steel. Even high heat input welding, the microstructure of coarse grain HAZ consisted of fine polygonal ferrite and pearlite and toughness of coarse grain HAZ was significantly improved.
This study was carried out to discuss the feasibility of wood and plastic wastes as the raw materials for wood particle-plastic composites. For this purpose, composites were manufactured from coarse and fine wood particles and polypropylene fibers by nonwoven web process. And the effect of wood particle size on the performance of the composites were analyzed according to ASTM D 1037-93. In the physical properties of composites, water absorption decreased with the increase of target density and polypropylene fiber content. And the composites with fine wood particles appeared to have slightly lower water absorption than those with coarse wood particles. Thickness swelling did not vary significantly with the increase of target density but increased with the increase of wood particle content. And the composites with fine wood particles were significantly lower in thickness swelling than those with coarse wood particles. In the mechanical properties of composites, dry and wet MOR showed the increasing tendency with the increase of polypropylene fiber content and target density. Dry and wet MOE showed the increasing tendency with the increase of target density but only wet MOE exhibited the increasing tendency with the increase of polypropylene fiber content. Composites with fine wood particles appeared to be generally higher in wet MOR and MOE than those with coarse wood particles. In conclusion, composites with fine wood particles showed generally higher performance than those with coarse ones. Also, composites were significantly superior to control particleboards in the performance, especially in water absorption and thickness swelling.
While coarse geomaterials with abundant fine particles are common, comparatively little information is available to know their engineering behaviour. In this study, the effects of fine particle content of coarse geomaterials on engineering properties, such as shear strength, deformability and permeability were investigated. It was known through large triaxial compression tests that when they are compared with good rock materials, the rock materials with abundant fine particles have different compaction characteristics, low shear strength, low stiffness, and low permeability.
This study investigates mechanical properties of the concrete using coarse particle cement which is manufactured by the classifying process. The variable factors are 3 types of W/C such as 40, 50, and 60% and 5types of the replacement of the coarse particle cement such as 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100%. As the results, amount of SP agent to secure the target fluidity is gradually declined in accordance with increasing CC replacement. There is no special tendency for target air content, but setting time is delayed according to increasing CC content. The peak of the simple adiabatic temperature rise is gradually decreased in accordance with increasing CC content, and approach time to peak is slightly delayed. The compressive strength is comparatively delayed.
This paper is to investigate experimentally the property of strength development on the concrete for 5 years according to the change of a replacement rate of coarse particle cement in order to use coarse particle cement with a fineness of 1 900 ㎠/g that is classified during a grinding process of the OPC production. The result is that as the CC replacement rate increased, the compressive strength was decreased proportionally. but the width of strength reduction was reduced as time passed.
