  • Significant amount of bottom ash has been stored in the pond site of Hadong coal power plant located at southeast region of Korea. In order to address strong environmental regulation that is going to be enforced in the near future, it is necessary to consume waste bottom ash stored in the pond site in a sustainable manner. In this research, the chemical and mineral characteristics of various sized bottom ash samples from Hadong coal power plant were analyzed using XRF, XRD, and particle size analyzer. According to the experimental results, the chemical compositions of bottom ash was slightly changed in terms of Al and Fe content. As the size of the bottom ash increased, cristobalite was observed as a result of crystallization. The mineralogical composition and its size distribution of powder type bottom ash indicated that significant amount of fly ash is included together with small sized bottom ash.

  • The purpose of this study was to prepare lightweight foamed concrete by mixing coal fly ash of circulating fluidized bed combustion(CFBC) with cement, and to develop uses for recycling by analyzing carbonation behavior resulting from a change in conditions for pressurized carbonation. For concrete, CFBC coal fly ash was mixed with Portland cement to the water-binder ratio of 0.5, and aging was applied at room temperature after 3 days of curing at $20^{\circ}C$, RH 60%. For carbonation, temperature was fixed at $60^{\circ}C$ and time at 1 h in the use of autoclave. Pressures were controlled to be $5kgf/cm^2$ and the supercritical condition of $80kgf/cm^2$, and gas compositions were employed as $CO_2$ 100% and $CO_2$ 15%+N2 85%. In the characteristics of produced lightweight concrete, the characteristics of lightweight foamed concrete resulting from carbonation reaction were affirmed through rate of weight change, carbonation depth test, air permeability, and processing analysis for the day 28 specimen. Based on these results, it is concluded that the present approach could provide a viable method for mass production of eco-friendly lightweight foamed concrete from CFBC coal fly ash stabilized by carbonation.

  • The coal fly ash (CFA) may be utilized as an extender for organic waste composting at the same time fully expected to solve all industrial waste disposal and sawdust tribe. The main objective in this study was to evaluate the effect of CFA addition as a bulking agent for swine manure composting. To determine the suitable addition rate of CFA as a bulking agent, 0, 10, 20 and 30% of saw dust were mixed with 30, 20, 10 and 0% of coal fly ash, respectively. Compost quality for swine manure composting was to evaluate temperature, pH, C/N ratio, and phytotoxicity as germination index. Stability of compost increased with increasing levels of CFA as bulking agent during swine manure composting due to the high alkaline materials including CFA. C to N ratio in treatment added CFA was higher than that of the control without CFA. After finishing composting, germination index of lettuce and cabbage in swine manure compost added 10% of CFA was similar to the control, all the heavy metal contents were far below the stipulated standard for organic farming. These results indicated tahr coal fly ash as bulking agents might be alternative materials to save saw dust and apply industrial products for swine manure composting.

  • In order to clarify the part of thermal properties of coal fly ash, the change of mineral compositions of the heated coal fly ash was investigated by XRD, TG - DTA and SEM. It was found that the mineral composition of coal fly ash was quartz, mullite and glassy phase ( a b. 20 ~ 25 wt % ), and had no difference in the range of 105 to $1000^{\circ}C $. Only in the case of Ansan coal fly ash, calcite was detected besides the crystalline of quartz and mullite. And anorthite was produced by the reaction between thermal- decomposed calcite, quartz and $Al_2O_3$component in the glassy phase at $1200^{\circ}C $.

  • In order to utilize coal ash for eelgrass beds, a pilot plant experiment was carried out. Eelgrass was transplanted to on artificial bed made of granulated coal ash. Successful settlement of eelgrass was achieved and the density of the eelgrass increased at an exponential rate through vagetative propagation after 24 months. An increase in biodiversity in and around the artificial eelgrass bed was observed after the transplant took place. From the results of this experiment, it can be concluded that granulated coal ash is a suitable material for creating eelgrass beds.

  • An environmental geochemical survey of heavy metal distribution in marine surface sediments around the ocean of Samcheonpo coal-fired power plant was conducted to investigate the possibility of coal-ash leakage from ash pond and the associated heavy metal pollution in sedimental deposits due to the operation of the coal-fired power plant. The X-Ray Diffractometry (XRD) analysis showed that the main leakage point of coal-ash was limited to a single site of the first ash pond. It also appeared that the amounts of organic carbon and metal elements were positively correlated to the grain size distribution, and that Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, and Zn were bounded to organic ligands. However, the distributions of Cd, Hg, and Mn did not have any significant correlation with the sediment grain size and organic matters. In particular, the distribution of Cd appeared to be affected by the concentration of the carbonate materials in the study area.

  • In viewpoints of environmental and resource conservation, it is desirable to utilize fly ash generated from domestic coal power stations as light constructive material. Furthermore, the demand of light constructive materials has been increased as many building tend to become highly multistory buildings. In demonstration of converting fly ash to light constructive materials, the Dwight-Lloyd kiln of which the operation is relatively easy and the reliability very high has been informed to be only commercialized plant over the world. In this review, Dwight-Lloyd kiln plant operated at Oomura coal power station in Japan is explained. Circular grate kiln, Shaft kiln, Rotary kiln plants that are under developed is also introduced.

  • In this study, zeolitic materials at $Na_2CO_3/CFA$ ratio of 0.6 - 1.8 were synthesized from coal fly ash from a thermal power plant using a fusion/hydrothermal method. The zeolitic materials were found to have cubic crystals structure and X-ray diffraction (XRD) peaks of Na-A zeolite by XRD and SEM analysis. When the zeolitic materials were synthesized from the coal fly ash, the XRD peaks of the zeolitic materials at $Na_2CO_3/CFA$ ratios of 0.9-1.8 had the same location as the XRD peaks of commercial Na-A zeolite. The XRD peaks of the Na-A zeolite ($Na_{12}Al_{12}Si_{12}O_{48}27.4H_2O$) were confirmed in the $2{\theta}$ in the range of 7.18-34.18. However, it was also confirmed that peaks of $CaCO_3$, an impurity inhibiting synthesis of Na-A zeolite from CaO and $Na_2CO_3$ in the coal fly ash, occurred in the XRD peaks of the zeolitic materials at $Na_2CO_3/CFA$ ratio of 1.5-1.8. The crystallinities of the zeolitic materials tended to increase gradually within the $Na_2CO_3/CFA$ ratio range of 0.6-1.8.

  • Extraction was performed to prepare ash-free coal from low rank coal under the temperature of $200-430^{\circ}C$ and initial pressure of 0.1MPa. Three kinds of coal samples with different rank were used and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone(NMP, polar), 1-methyl naphthalene(I-MN, non-polar), Light Cycle Oil(LCO, non-polar) were used as solvents. Results showed that higher extraction yield could be obtained with NMP than with 1-MN and LCO, but the ash concentration shows minimun in the case of 1-MN. Three operation modes were compared, that is, idle, agitation and ultrasonic extraction mode. From the results, it was found that the extraction yield and ash concentration were 70.09% and 1.03% under the agitation mode, 80.7% and 0.76% under the ultrasonic operation mode respectively in the case of NMP used at the temperature of $350^{\circ}C$. Similar results were obtained with 1-MN. Effect of ultrasonic on the extraction was estimated as 15-20% increase in the yields and 26% reduction in the ash concentration.
