ENHANCED REMOVAL OF RESIDUAL ALUMINUM AND TURBIDITY IN TREATED WATER USING POLYMERS

  • This study investigated the possibility of reducing the residual aluminum (Al) in the treated water using polymers. Two raw waters (lake and river water) and three kinds of polymers (coagulant, flocculant, and filtration aids) were used for this purpose. This study found that coagulation at the high dose did not necessarily lead to the high concentration of the residual Al in the treated water. The coagulation efficacy was found more important in determining the residual Al than the coagulant dose. The use of a polymer enhanced the removal of turbidity as well as the residual Al. The coagulant aid removed the dissolved Al as well as the particulate Al by helping the coagulation and the solid-liquid separation. The flocculant aid and the filtration aid preferentially removed the particulate Al while helping the solid-liquid separation. The filtration aid reduced the residual Al substantially more effectively than the flocculant aid. The polyamine-based coagulant aid (FL) showed the better performance in reducing the residual Al and turbidity than DADMAC (WT). The cationic flocculant aid with weak charge density and the medium molecular weight (SC-020) showed the best performance in reducing the residual Al.

Decolorization of Dyeing Wastewater with Use of Chitosan Materials

  • More attention has been paid to the research on decolorization of dyeing wastewater nowadays. In this study, an investigation into the decolorization of dyeing wastewater was conducted using a combination of coagulant, carboxymethyl chitosan (NOCC) and coagulant aid, polyscrylamide (PAM). The factors influencing the decolorization efficiency, such as pH value, coagulant and the dosages of coagulant, were discussed. The results showed that using PAM as coagulant aid could reach a high decolorization efficiency compared with using NOCC alone. The optimal conditions were pH 2.3, 480 mg/L for NOCC, and 4-8 mg/L for PAM. Under the optimum conditions, the rate of decolorization could achieve 99%, and the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) could achieve 90%. In addition, the membrane processes with chitosan/rare-earth-metals could enhance the decolorization rate of Direct Black FF to 94.7%, and Indanthren Red F3B to 98.2%, respectively.

  • Disposal of waterwork sludge is important problem in WTP(water treatment plant). Purpose of this study is treated municipal waste water chemically using sludge that is produced in waterwork plant by link to reutilize waterwork sludge. Municipal waste water that use in an experiment used is produced at C university, and is SS 220 mg/L, BOD 145 mg/L, COD 160 mg/L, T-N 52 mg/L and T-P 2.6 mg/L. Used Alum, polymer coagulant and coagulant aid (diatomite, powered activated carbon) as CaO, coagulant as alkaline aid by chemical treatment medicine. In case of does slow speed agitation and stations after pours waterwork sludge in sewage and alkaline aid and coagulant at rapidly mixing the colloidal creation speed is fast and fine colloids concentration was high but settling time is shortened a little and removal rate of pollutant improved by $60{\sim}99%$.

개인하수처리시설 처리수의 수질 개선을 위한 응집보조제로서의 천연제올라이트 적용에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Application of Natural Zeolite as Coagulant Aid for Effluent Quality Improvement in Private Sewage Treatment Facility)

  • The purpose of this study is to solve the problem of nutrient removal due to rapid hydraulic retention time (HRT) variation in small size private sewage treatment facility and to have better effluent quality by using natural zeolite as a coagulant aid. The experiments were conducted by applying different conditions of HRT, coagulant, and zeolite dosages. As an experimental result, $TBOD_{5}$, TSS, and TP removal efficiencies were 64.9%, 94.5%, and 98.8% at co-injection with zeolite. Overall removal efficiencies of $TBOD_{5}$, TSS, and TP have improved 15.7, 28.7, 6.1%, respectively. This result shows that zeolite addition could improve flocculation, increase setting velocity, and thus have better treatment. Therefore the use of zeolite as a coagulant aid can be useful in small size private sewage treatment facility, where especially extra nutrient removal is required to meet the legal standard for discharge.

전자선과 불가사리 분말을 이용한 하수슬러지 탈수능 향상 (Enhancement of Sludge Dewaterability using a Starfish and the Radiation Technology)

  • This study was focused on the manufacturing method of a dewatering aid, which would reduce the water content of the sludge cake by enhancing the dewaterability of sewage sludge. The pretreatment technology for sludge by using radiation and among diverse discarded resources were starfish selected as the material to manufacture the dewatering aid. Starfish went through the process of washing, drying, and pulverizing. The starfish powder made in this process was applied to the digested sludge generated at the sewage treatment plant of D City, and its effects were investigated. The starfish powder that was 300 ${\mu}m$ in particle size was added to the irradiated digested sludge. After the application of the condensation process, the sludge with the starfish powder added was dewatered using the belt press and centrifuge, which were the traditional pressure dewatering devices. As the result, it reduced the water content of the sludge 20% higher than the dewatered cake with no dewatering aid added and irradiation. When the powder was added, it contributed to less use of the coagulant added. The more irradiation dose, the lower water content did the dewatered cake have and the more coagulant was needed for condensation, which seems to be a disadvantage that can be compensated for by the starfish dewatering aid. A small-scaled treatment of the study to a radiation technology and dewatering aid using a discarded resource confirmed the potential of dewaterability. Based on the results saying that the dewatering aid and radiation technology can improve dewatering effects using the traditional dewatering devices, this pretreatment technology will be expected to be applied to sewage treatment plants.

급속여과공정에서의 여과보조제 사용에 따른 여과특성 (Characteristics of High-Rate Filtration with Filtration Aids)

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of filter aids in the dual-media rapid filtration. Paper-filter tests were conducted to determine the proper dosages of coagulant and filter aid, and pilot plant tests using two dual-media filter columns were performed for a variety of filtration rates. Using a filter aid (non-ionic polymer), the maximum feasible filtration rate is 480m/day, while turbidity is less than 0.3 NTU and filter run-time is about 70 hours. It is possible to increase the filtration rate up to 360 m/day for keeping the turbidity less than 0.1 NTU. Turbidity increases for the filtration rate greater than 360m/day. In general, the quality of filtered water with a filter aid is stable, while the filter maintains a sufficient filter run-time for a maximum allowable head loss. Particularly, the initial breakthrough can be effectively controlled. The use of a filter aid may be one of the methods applicable if the turbidity of filtered water is required to be improved or if the filter breakthrough limits filter run-time.

Poly-γ-glutamic acid(PGA)를 이용한 폐수의 응집특성 (The Coagulation Characteristics of Wastewater Using Poly-γ-glutamic Acid)

  • Poly-${\gamma}$-glutamic acid (${\gamma}-PGA$), which is extracted from fermented soybeans, is a high molecular weight, adhesive, and negatively charged(anionic) polymer. Recently, ${\gamma}-PGA$ has gained attention due to its potential as polymer. The objectives of this study were to examine the applicability of ${\gamma}-PGA$ as a coagulant and/or a coagulant aid, to evaluate the efficiency of ${\gamma}-PGA$ for the removal of Organic and Ammonium substance in wastewater treatment. The effect of coagulation was evaluated for the removal of SS and organic matter using poly aluminum chloride(PACI) as well as newly developed ${\gamma}-PGA$. The maximum COD removal rate of 63% and the SS of 78% were occurred at the dosage of 50mg/L ${\gamma}-PGA$ only. The most effective removal for particulate and organic matter was occured when both PACI and ${\gamma}-PGA$ were applied at the rate of 20:1(10mg/L PACI and 0.5mg/L ${\gamma}-PGA$). When mixed with PACI, only small portion of ${\gamma}-PGA$ was enough to improve removal efficiencies of organic and particulate matter in wastewater. This result showed the positive potential of ${\gamma}-PGA$ as a new coagulant materials for wastewater treatment.

낙동강유역 상수원의 규조류 발생에 따른 정수장에서 제거율 향상 방안 (Removal Improvement in Water Treatment Plant for Occurrence of Diatoms (Synedra sp.) in the Nakdong River)

  • 본 연구는 낙동강에 출현하는 Synedra 속의 길이 차이가 제거 효율과 여과지속시간에 미치는 영향과 특성을 고찰하였다. 길이가 $100{\mu}m$ 내외인 S. tenera 제거율은 90.9~94.4%로 고른 반면, 길이가 $300{\mu}m$ 내외인 S. acus 제거율은 60~70%로 낮았다. 무기응집제 만을 사용할 때 $PACS_2$와 PAC가 다른 응집제보다 S. acus 제거율이 5~6% 높았다. 황토 첨가는 주 응집제의 주입률을 15 mg/L 증가시키고, 모든 Synedra 속의 제거율을 감소시키는 역효과가 나타났다. Sodium Silicate 첨가는 S. acus의 제거율은 다소 향상시켰다. Polyamine은 2.0~2.5 mg/L 첨가하여 S. acus 제거율을 96.9%까지 상승시켰다. Polyamine 주입률과 S. acus 제거율은 비례관계식이 성립하였다. 수온 $15^{\circ}C$$4^{\circ}C$보다 S. acus 제거율이 높았다. S. acus의 제거율과 탁도 제거율 및 다른 조류 제거율간의 상관성이 매우 낮았다. 2012년 정수장 운영 사례에서 Synedra 속의 길이에 따른 제거율 특성이 본 실험결과와 비슷하였다. 침전수의 S. acus 개체수와 여과지속시간은 ln 함수관계가 성립되어 여과지속시간을 예측할 수 있었다.

세사 투입에 따라 형성된 플럭의 물리적 특성 (Effects of ballasting Agent (Microsand) on Physical Floc Characteristics)

  • Chemical coagulation destabilizes colloidal particles so that particles grow to larger flocs. Solid particles are then removed by solid-liquid separation after typical precipitation. Rapid precipitation enhances the separation by reducing the precipitation time with larger and denser particles. Conventionally, polyelectolyte compounds (polymers) function as a flocculant aid by introducing a interparticle binding, which increases the particle size and density. And more recent ballasted flocculation adds a ballasting agent (microsand) to form denser particles with its high-density(sp gr=2.65). The current research was to evaluate the manner in which ballasted flocs are formed under different injection timings of microsand and to recognize the effects on floc formation. $FeCl_3$ as a coagulant, anionic polymer for a flocculation aid and microsand were used for the floc formation. Floc size (diameter) was widely ranged with the highest mean value when microsand was injected between $FeCl_3$ and polymer. Mean floc density was larger when the floc formed smaller. Settling velocity increased with larger floc size, whilst not significantly affected by the timing of microsand injection. The additional slow mixing on floc formation increased floc size to some extent.
