Synthesis of Mesoporous Pt-Au Alloy Electrode by Electrodeposition Method for Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (전기화학적 증착법에 의한 직접 메탄올 연료전지(DMFC)용 메조포러스 백금-금 합금전극제조)

  • Mesoporous Pt-Au alloy films were successfully fabricated on ITO-coated glass by electrodeposition method using tri-blockcopolymer (P123) as a templating agent. The electrolyte consisted of 10 mM hydrogen hexachloroplatinate ($H_2PtCl_6$), 10 mM hydrogen tetrachloroaurate ($HAuCl_4$), and proper amount of P123. For comparison, control samples were electrodeposited without $HAuCl_4$ and P123. Film composition was determined by EDS(Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy), and the mesoporous structure was confirmed by TEM(Transmission Electron Microscopy). SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy) was utilized to examine surface morphology, and it was observed that the addition of P123 affected the particle growth, resulting in the significant change of surface morphology. Methanol oxidation and CO oxidation were carried out to investigate electrocatalytic activities of synthesized samples. It was observed that the catalytic activity was strongly dependent on the film compositions. Compared with nonporous electrode prepared without P123 templating, mesoporous films prepared with P123 templating showed much higher catalytic activities and stability for both methanol oxidation and CO oxidation. These enhanced electrocatalytic activities were due to the high surface area and facilitated charge transfer of mesoporous films.

Thin Film Growth and Evaluation Method for Conventional Co-Cr Based Perpendicular Magnetic Recording Media: Problems and New Solutions

  • We proposed a novel method to evaluate the magnetic properties of the initial layer and the columnar structure separately for CoCr-based perpendicular recording media. We show that the thickness of the initial layer and the intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy of columnar structure can be quantitatively evaluated using the plotted product of perpendicular anisotropy to magnetic film thickness versus magnetic film thickness ($K_{u{\bot}}^{ex{p.}}$ $\times$ d$_{mag.}$ vs. d$_{mag.}$ plot). Based on the analyses, it is found that: (1) compared with CoCrPtTa media, CoCrPtB media have relatively thin initial layer, and have fine grains with homogeneous columnar structure with c-plane crystallographic orientation; (2) CoCrPtB media can be grown epitaxially on Ru or CoCr/C intermediate layer, and as the result, the magnetic properties of the media within thin thickness region of d$_{mag.}$ $\leq$ 20 nm is significantly improved; (3) the key issue of material investigation for CoCr-based perpendicular recording media will be focused on how to fabricate c-plane-oriented columnar grains well isolated with nonmagnetic substance in epitaxial-growth media, while maintaining the thermal stability of the media.

  • Hydrocarbon solution of $(PPh_3)_2(CO)MOSO_2CF_3(M=Rh$, Ir)reacts rapidly with Pyrazine or 4,4'-bipyridyl to yield dinuclear metal complexes $[(PPh_3)_3(CO)M({\mu}-pyrazine)M(CO)(PPh_3)_2](SO_3CF_3)_2$ (I: M= RhH; III: M=Ir) or [$(PPh_3)_2$(CO)M(${\mu}$-44'-bipyridyl)M(CO)$(PPh_3)_2](SO_3CF_3)_2$, (II: M=Rh; IV: M=Ir), respectively. Compounds, I, II, III, and IV were characterized by $^1H-NMR$, $^{13}C-NMR$, $^{31}P-NMR$, and infrared spectrum. Ethanol solution of $(PPh_3)_2(CO)MOSO_2CF_3$ (M=Rh, Ir) also reacts with $(TBA)_2$M'$(CN)_4$ (M'=Pd, Pt) to yield trinuclear metal complexes [$(PPh_3)_2$(CO)dM-NCM'$(CN)_2$CN-M(CO)$(PPh_3)_2]$ (V : M=Rh, M'=Pd; VI : M=Rh, M'=Pt; VII: M=Ir, M'=Pd; VIII: M=Ir, M'=Pt). The trinuclear metal complexes V, VI, VII, and VIII are bridged by the cyanide groups. The infrared spectrum of V, VI, VII, and VIII supports the presence of the bridged cyanide and terminal cyanide group.

Shear bond strength of luting cements to fixed superstructure metal surfaces under various seating forces

  • PURPOSE. In this study, the shear bond strengths (SBS) of luting cements to fixed superstructure metal surfaces under various seating forces were investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Seven different cements [Polycarboxylate (PCC), Glass-Ionomer (GIC), Zinc phospahate (ZPC), Self-adhesive resin (RXU), Resin (C&B), and Temporary cements ((RXT) and (TCS))] were bonded to a total number of 224 square blocks ($5{\times}5{\times}3mm$) made of one pure metal [Titanium (CP Ti) and two metal alloys [Gold-Platinum (Au-Pt) and Cobalt-Chrome (Co-Cr)] under 10 N and 50 N seating forces. SBS values were determined and data were analyzed with 3-way ANOVA. Pairwise comparisons and interactions among groups were analyzed with Tukey's simultaneous confidence intervals. RESULTS. Overall mean scores indicated that Co-Cr showed the highest SBS values ($1.96{\pm}0.4$) (P<.00), while Au-Pt showed the lowest among all metals tested ($1.57{\pm}0.4$) (P<.00). Except for PCC/CP Ti, RXU/CP Ti, and GIC/Au-Pt factor level combinations (P<.00), the cements tested under 10 N seating force showed no significantly higher SBS values when compared to the values of those tested under 50 N seating force (P>.05). The PCC cement showed the highest mean SBS score ($3.59{\pm}0.07$) among all cements tested (P<.00), while the resin-based temporary luting cement RXT showed the lowest ($0.39{\pm}0.07$) (P<.00). CONCLUSION. Polycarboxylate cement provides reliable bonding performance to metal surfaces. Resin-based temporary luting cements can be used when retrievability is needed. GIC is not suitable for permanent cementation of fixed dental prostheses consisting of CP Ti or Au-Pt substructures.

Magnetic Properties and the Order-disorder Phase Transformation of (Fe1-XCoX) Pt Magnetic Thin Films

  • Magnetic properties and crystal structures of (Fe1-XCoX) Pt (X = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0) ternary thin films were investigated. The order-disorder phase transformation of FePt thin films during annealing was also studied by x-ray diffraction and M ssbauer spectroscopy. The magnetic thin films were deposited on glass substrates using a dc sputtering method and were subsequently annealed at 400~$700^{\circ}C$ in a high vacuum. The as-deposited films exhibited a high degree of the <111> preferred orientation and the preferred orientation was not destroyed even after the subsequent post annealing. The coercivity of the ($Fe_xCo_{1-x}$) Pt thin films annealed at $700^{\circ}C$ showed a minimum value at the equiatomic composition of the Fe and Co atoms. The ordered structure of the FePt alloy was thought to have formed from the disordered structure by an inhomogeneous process, which was confirmed by the asymmetric peak shapes and M ssbauer spectra.

Electrical characteristics of Au and Pt diffused silicon $p^{+}-n$ Junction diode (Au와 Pt 확산에 의한 실리콘 $p^{+}-n$ 접합 스위칭다이오드의 전기적 특성)

  • The silicon $p^{+}-n$ junction diodes were fabricated. The fabricated wafers were treated by single or double annealing steps. Single annealing process was performed by diffusion of either Au or Pt into the wafer under the oxygen or nitrogen ambient at $800{\sim}1010^{\circ}C$. Second annealing step involved additional annealing of the single annealed wafer under the oxygen ambient at $800{\sim}1010^{\circ}C$ for one hour. Electrical characteristics of the diodes were investigated to evaluate the effect of the annealing treatments. In the case of single annealing under nitrogen ambient at $1010^{\circ}C$ for one hour, the amount of leakage current of Pt diffused diode was 75 times larger than that of Au diffused one. The optimum processing condition to achieve high speed silicon $p^{+}-n$ junction diodes from this study was obtained when Pt diffused wafer(treated under the nitrogen ambient at $1010^{\circ}C$ for one hour) was secondly annealed in an oxygen ambient at $800^{\circ}C$ for one hour. The resulting leakage current of two step annealed diodes were remarkably reduced to 1/1100 of the single annealed one. The diode characteristics such as recovery time, breakdown voltage, leakage current, and forward voltage were 4ns, 138V, 1.72nA, and 1V, respectively.

Comparison of structural and electrical properties of PMN-PT/LSCO thin films deposited on different substrates by pulsed laser deposition

  • The 0.65Pb($Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-0.35PbTiO_3$ (PMN-PT) thin films with $La_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_{3-\delta}$ (LSCO) bottom electrodes were grown on $CeO_2$/YSZ/Si(001), Pt/$TiO_2$/Si and $SrTiO_3$ (STO) substrates using conventional pulsed laser deposition (PLD) at a substrate temperature of $550^{\circ}C$. Since generally the crystallographic orientation of the bottom electrode induces the orientation of the films deposited on it, it allows us to observe the influence of the PMN-PT film orientation on the electrical properties. Phi scan done on PMN-PT/LSCO thin films shows epitaxial behavior of the films grown on sto substrates and $CeO_2$/YSZ buffered Si(001) substrates, and (110) texture on Pt/$TiO_2$/Si substrates. Polarization-electricfield (P-E) measurement shows good hysteresis behavior of PMN-PT films with remnant polarization of 18.2, 8.8, and $4.4{\mu}C/cm^2$ on $CeO_2$/YSZ/Si, Pt/TiO2/Si and STO substrates respectively.

The Change of Magnetic Easy Axis in Ion Beam Mixed Co/Pt Multilayer

  • We have studied magnetic properties of Co/Pt multilayered films which have attracted great interest as high-density magneto-optical (MO) recording media due to their good MO properties. For this study, [Pt(45 )/Co(35 )]$\times$8 films were deposited with a Pt buffer layer of 60 on Si(100) substrate by alternating electron-beam evaporation in a high vacuum and were ion beam mixed by using 80keV Ar+ at 25$0^{\circ}C$. Especially, an external magnetic field was added to help changing magnetic property during ion beam mixing (IBM). The intermixing of Co and Pt layers after IBM was confirmed with Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The MO property of the film was measured with magneto-optical Kerr spectrometer and the change of magnetic easy axis in the film plane was observed from Ker loop data. This anomalous result might be correlated with the change of atomic structure due to the intermixing effect.
