Cyclin B1 is known to reflect the M-phase promoting factor (MPF), a universal regulator of G2/M-phase transition, activity during the process of oocytes maturation. To investigate whether culture condition affects the maturation rate and the expression of cyclin B1 protein, bovine immature oocytes are stimulated and cultured according to the following protocols: Experiment 1: denuded oocytes (denude) only, COC only, denuded oocytes+granulosa cells (denude+GCs) and COC+GCs; Experiment 2: no-activation (control), 7% ethanol for 5 min and $10{\mu}l/ml$ ionomycin for 5 min at immediately before maturation. The maturation rates of denude and no-activation group were significantly lower in both experiments (P<0.05), respectively. Co-culture or stimulation method in bovine immature oocytes culture increases the cyclin B1 expression significantly in both experiments (P<0.05). Based on these results, culture condition affects the maturation rate and the expression of cyclin B1 protein during the first meiotic maturation in bovine immature oocytes.

This paper experimentally deals with the excitation by functional electrical stimulus(FES) and the response of electromyo-potential at the muscles of antebrachial joint in a human body. The excitation of FES, which results in the contraction of the muscles and thus the flection of the joint, shows that the flection angle of the joint is proportional to the magnitude of the stimulus current. The response of electromyo-potential measured according to the FES shows the linearly-proportional relation between the joint torque and the electromyo-potential. The results can be used for active motion of joint rehabilitation.

Ltd, Korea), skatole (TAKASAGO co.
There was a decrease in nitrate reductase activity (NRA) measured in vivo in rice roots (Oryza sativa cv. Tongil) grown in anaerobic culture solution. But it was reversed by addition of malonate to the in vivo nitrate reduction assay medium. Malonate increased the in vivo NRA during 2-5 hours incubation and decreased it in longer incubation hours. In vivo NRA was stimulated by addition of NaHCO3 to the assay medium, but not by Na2CO3. The stimulation of NRA by NaHCO3 was not observed in shoot removed rice roots. It is suggested that CO2 from NaHCO3 is carboxylated by phosphoenol pyruvate carboxylase, results in increasing the malate contents in the roots, and stimulates the in vivo NRA. NADH needed in nitrate reduction is supported by malate oxidation. In rice roots, it seems probable that malate oxidation in the mitochondria is more important to nitrate reduction than malae oxidation in cytoplasm.

In this paper, the prototype of a walking guide robot with tactile display is introduced, and the psychophysical experiment of the tactile recognition for a tactile display is carried out and analyzed. The objective of this research is the development of a walking guide robot for the blind to walk safely. A walking guide robot consists of a guide vehicle and a tactile display device. A guide vehicle, located in the front of the walking blind, detects the obstacle using ultrasonic sensors and offers the information of position and walking direction acquired from GPS module to the walking blind by voice. The tactile display device, located in the handle which is connected with the guide vehicle by cane, offers the processed obstacle information such as position, size, moving, shape of obstacle and safe path, etc. The psychophysical experiments for the threshold of perception and recognition ability of tactile stimulation are carried out by the estimation of the subject group. As a result the appropriate tactile stimulus intensity and frequency to recognize tactile stimulation effectively are discussed and derived.

Every year, lives are lost due to electrical safety accidents that could have been prevented with proper education and awareness of electrical safety. To prevent such accidents, experiential education is more effective than indoctrination education. This paper describes the electrical safety education system based on virtual reality (VR) and evaluates effect of the proposed system. Users operated the experiential electrical safety education system, and they were provided electrical stimulation in an electric shock experience using a haptic device. Appropriate stimulation values were calculated according to age (children vs. adults) and gender through experiment. The scenario in which participants experience electrical safety in the home environment was structured, and related educational contents was produced. A total of 68 healthy elementary students evaluated the educational effect of the system. The results showed that the educational effect and the sustainability of effect of the proposed system are superior to those of existing multimedia learning methods. By implementing electrical safety education stimulating the senses of human, the learning effect was promoted and this experiential education would be able to prevent electrical accidents.
Medical magnetic stimulator generates strong magnetic field pulses. Clinical applications of the magnetic pulse are the stimulation of nervous system and the contraction of muscle. The unique source of the strong magnetic pulse is a capacitor-inductor resonator and this inductor generates a strong sinusoidal magnetic pulse by discharging the capacitor with high initial voltage. Continuous muscle contraction needs sequential generation of the magnetic pulses. However, to keep the magnitude of sequential pulses identical, an expensive high-voltage power supply have to support voltage drop of the capacitor between the pulses. A protection circuit between the supply and the resonator is necessary to protect the supply from reverse current caused by capacitor voltage reversal. In this paper, a new circuit structure of the magnetic stimulator adopting a low-frequency fly-back switching is proposed. The new circuit supports sequential pulse generation and allows the reverse current without damage. Performance of the new circuit is examined and a low-cost magnetic stimulator for urinary incontinence therapy is being developed using the presented method.
The development of nanotechnology has penetrated the fields of biology and medicine, resulting in remarkable applications for tissue regeneration. In order to apply this technology to tissue engineering, we have developed nano-scaled 3D scaffolds consisting of growth factor-loaded heparin/poly(l-lysine) nanoparticles (NPs) attached to the surface of polymeric micro spheres via polyionic complex methods. Growth factor-loaded NPs were simply produced as polyelectrolyte complexes with diameters of 100-200 nm. They were then coated onto positively charged poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) pretreated with polyethyleneimine to enable cell adhesion, proliferation, and stimulation of neurite outgrowth. Propidium iodide staining and $\beta$-tubulin analysis revealed that neuronal PC12 cells proliferated extensively, expressed significant amounts of b-tubulin, and showed well-structured neurite outgrowth on polymeric microspheres by stimulation with growth factors. These results suggest that cellular adhesion and biological functionality on prepared PLGA microspheres enabled terminal differentiation of neuronal cells.
TR8 is a recently identified member of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor superfamily. TR8 seems to play important roles in bone metabolism as stimulation of this receptor with its ligand, TL8 or osteoclast differentiation factor (ODF), induced the differentiation and activation of osteoclasts. Despite its important biological functions, the biochemcial events ensuing form TR8 activation have not been revealed in detail. Most of TNF receptor family proteins provoke the activation of the NF-$textsc{k}$B transcription factor. In the present study, we examined the signaling potential of TR8 to induce NF-B activation. When overexpressed in a human embryonic kidney cell line by transient transfection, TR8 caused a strong activation of NF-$textsc{k}$B, which was further increased upon stimulation with TL8. The TR8-induced NF-B activation was abrogated by the co-expression of the TRAF6 mutnat lacking the Ring and zinc finger domains and that of the kinase-inactive mutant NIK. Taken together, our study suggests that the presence of intact TRAF6 and the kiase activity of NIK may be essential for TR8 to induce NF-$textsc{k}$B activation.
