A Study on Cluster Head Selection and a Cluster Formation Plan to Prolong the Lifetime of a Wireless Sensor Network

  • The energy of a sensor in a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) puts a limit on the lifetime of the network. To prolong the lifetime, a clustering plan is used. Clustering technology gets its energy efficiency through reducing the number of communication occurrences between the sensors and the base station (BS). In the distributed clustering protocol, LEACH-like (Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy - like), the number of sensor's cluster head (CH) roles is different depending on the sensor's residual energy, which prolongs the time at which half of nodes die (HNA) and network lifetime. The position of the CH in each cluster tends to be at the center of the side close to BS, which forces cluster members to consume more energy to send data to the CH. In this paper, a protocol, pseudo-LEACH, is proposed, in which a cluster with a CH placed at the center of the cluster is formed. The scheme used allows the network to consume less energy. As a result, the timing of the HNA is extended and the stable network period increases at about 10% as shown by the simulation using MATLAB.

Evolution of late-type galaxies in cluster environment: Effects of high-speed multiple interactions with early-type galaxies

  • Late-type galaxies falling into a cluster would evolve being influenced by the interactions with both the cluster and the nearby cluster member galaxies. Most numerical studies, however, tend to focus on the effects of the former with little work done on those of the later. We thus perform numerical study on the evolution of a late-type galaxy falling radially toward the cluster center interacting with neighbouring early-type galaxies, using N-body, hydrodynamical simulations. Based on the information about the typical galaxy encounters obtained by using the galaxy catalog of Coma cluster, we run the simulations for the cases where a Milky Way Galaxy-like late-type galaxy, flying either edge-on or face-on, experiences six consecutive collisions with twice more massive early-type galaxies having hot gas in their halos. Our simulations show that the evolution of the late-type galaxy can be significantly affected by the high-speed multiple collisions with the early-type galaxies, such as on the cold gas content and the star formation activity, particularly through the hydrodynamic interactions between the cold disk and the hot gas halos. By comparing our simulation results with those of others, we claim that the role of the galaxy-galaxy interactions on the evolution of late-type galaxies in clusters could be comparable with that of the galaxy-cluster interactions, depending on the dynamical history.

THE ARCHES CLUSTER MASS FUNCTION

  • We have analyzed H and $K_s$-band images of the Arches cluster obtained using the NIRC2 instrument on Keck with the laser guide star adaptive optics (LGS AO) system. With the help of the LGS AO system, we were able to obtain the deepest ever photometry for this cluster and its neighborhood, and derive the background-subtracted present-day mass function (PDMF) down to $1.3M_{\bigodot}$ for the 5"-9" annulus of the cluster. We find that the previously reported turnover at $6M_{\bigodot}$ is simply due to a local bump in the mass function (MF), and that the MF continues to increase down to our 50 % completeness limit ($1.3M_{\bigodot}$) with a power-law exponent of ${\Gamma}$ = -0.91 for the mass range of 1.3 < M/$M_{\bigodot}$ < 50. Our numerical calculations for the evolution of the Arches cluster show that the ${\Gamma}$ values for our annulus increase by 0.1-0.2 during the lifetime of the cluster, and thus suggest that the Arches cluster initially had ${\Gamma}$ of $-1.0{\sim}-1.1$, which is only slightly shallower than the Salpeter value.

  • Recently with increasing the use of parallel computing and cluster system which was connected high speed network, the interest about distributed and parallel file system is increasing. Specially, there are many researches, which focused on optimizing the performance of distributed and parallel file system for the more efficient use of cluster system. In this paper, we analyzed the performance of PVFS(Parallel Virtual File System) in small cluster system. In addition, to improve the PVFS performance we proposed the chancing the size of flow buffer according to the network speed and we optimized the PVFS performance on small cluster system.

  • Clustering is a method to classify the given data set with same property into several classes. To cluster data, many methods such as K-Means, Fuzzy C-Means(FCM), Mountain Method(MM), and etc, have been proposed and used. But the clustering results of conventional methods are sensitively influenced by initial values given for clustering in each method. Especially, FCM is very sensitive to noisy data, and cluster center distortion phenomenon is occurred because the method dose clustering through minimization of within-clusters variance. In this paper, we propose a clustering method which reduces cluster center distortion through merging the nearest data based on the data weight, and not being influenced by initial values. We show the effectiveness of the proposed through experimental results applied it to various types of data sets, and comparison of cluster centers with those of FCM.

  • This paper proposes a scheme of initial cluster center selection in FCM algorithm using the genetic algorithms. The FCM algorithm often fails in the search for global optimum because it is local search techniques that search for the optimum by using hill-climbing procedures. To solve this problem, we search for a hypersphere encircling each clusters whose parameters are estimated by the genetic algorithms. Then instead of a randomized initialization for fuzzy partition matrix in FCM algorithm, we initialize each cluster center by the center of a searched hypersphere. Our experimental results show that the proposed initializing scheme has higher probabilities of finding the global or near global optimal solutions than the traditional FCM algorithm.

Analysis of Change Transitions in Regional Types in Emergency Department Patient Flows of in Jeonlado (2014-2018) (전라지역 응급실 환자의 유출입 분석 및 지역유형 변화 추이)

  • This study analyzed the inflow and outflow patterns of emergency department patients, to identify changes in regional types in cities, counties, and districts in Jeonlado, Korea. Data of areas in Jeonlado for 2014 to 2018 were extracted from the National Emergency Department Information System. The extracted data includes the patients' and emergency medical institution addresses, which were used to calculate the relevance index (RI) and commitment index (CI). The calculated indices were classified into regional types by applying cluster analysis. A non-parametric method, Kruskal-Wallis test, was employed to examine the differences between years for RI and CI by regional types. The results of cluster analysis using the relevance and commitment indices revealed three regional types. Regions in cluster 1 were classified as outflow type, in cluster 2 as inflow type, and in cluster 3 as self-sufficient. RI and CI were calculated for each cluster or regional type. There were no significant differences between years in cluster 2 (inflow type) and cluster 3 (self-sufficient type). In cluster 1 (outflow type), there were no significant differences in CI between the years; however, there were significant differences in RI between 2014 and 2017, and 2014 and 2018. It is difficult to see that the emergency medical environment has improved due to the increased concentration of emergency medical care.
