A Heuristic Time Sharing Policy for Backup Resources in Cloud System

  • Cloud computing promises high performance and cost-efficiency. However, most cloud infrastructures operate at a low utilization, which greatly adheres cost effectiveness. Previous works focus on seeking efficient virtual machine (VM) consolidation strategies to increase the utilization of virtual resources in production environment, but overlook the under-utilization of backup virtual resources. We propose a heuristic time sharing policy of backup VMs derived from the restless multi-armed bandit problem. The proposed policy achieves increasing backup virtual resources utilization and providing high availability. Both the results in simulation and prototype system experiments show that the traditional 1:1 backup provision can be extended to 1:M (M≫1) between the backup VMs and the service VMs, and the utilization of backup VMs can be enhanced significantly.

  • Recently, Interest variety of IT services and computing resources are increasing. As a result, the interest in the security of cloud environments is also increasing. Cloud environment is stored that to provide services to a large amount of IT resources on the Cloud. Therefore, Cloud is integrity of the stored data and resources that such as data leakage, forgery, etc. security incidents that the ability to quickly process is required. However, the existing developed various solutions or studies without considering their cloud environment for development and research to graft in a cloud environment because it has been difficult. Therefore, we proposed wire-wireless integrated Security management Model in cloud environment.

  • Cloud computing provides access to big volumes of data and computational resources through various services. Cloud computing also supports to process these volumes of data using set of computers. Cloud computing can satisfy resource requirements through virtualization technology. Eucalyptus is an open source cloud computing environment helps the users to setup their own private cloud based on virtualization. In this paper, monitoring of virtual machines is explained with the eucalyptus cloud setup.

  • Green cloud computing refers to the green ambient benefits that information technology services delivered over the Internet can offer for the society. The green meaning environment friendly and cloud computing is a traditional symbol for the Internet and a type of service provider. Cloud computing has drastically increased the number of datacenters and the energy consumption of data centers and that has become a critical issue which is extremely important in green ambience. These days the cloud data center needs high energy resources that leads to high operational cost and also maximizes CO2 - carbon footprint that pollutes the ambience which is not to be considered as green ambience. So we need to provide a way that leads us to green ambience. Cloud computing for the green ambience should be designed in a way which will utilize less energy resources and to minimize the CO2 -carbon footprint, known as green cloud. In this paper we discuss various elements of Clouds which contributes to minimize the total energy consumption and the carbon emission so as to enable green ambience through green cloud computing.

  • Cloud computing is a new service to provide dynamic, scalable virtual resource services via the Internet. Cloud market is available to multiple cloud computing resource providers and users communicate with each other and participate in market transactions. However, since cloud computing is facing with more and more security issues, how to complete the allocation process effectively and securely become a problem urgently to be solved. In this paper, we firstly analyze the cloud resource allocation problem and propose a mathematic model based on combinatorial double auction. Secondly, we introduce a trust evaluation mechanism into our model and combine genetic algorithm with simulated annealing algorithm to increase the efficiency and security of cloud service. Finally, by doing the overall simulation, we prove that our model is highly effective in the allocation of cloud resources.

  • Cloud Native refers to the Technical Maturity Level of a cloud environment that can utilize all cloud resources to fully function. In converting public sector information resources to the cloud, the characteristics of the cloud are not being used well. Therefore, in this study, the qualitative research method cloud expert interview technique and the quantitative research method used text network analysis for domestic and foreign related articles. Through this, we analyzed the utilization trends related to domestic and foreign cloud natives and the cloud policies of developed countries. Through previous research, the core components of cloud-native were examined, and the need for agile methodologies that were not addressed in previous studies was raised. It is believed that these core components will be applied in the public sector to contribute to business innovation through digital innovation. In addition, this study aims to provide important implications for the use of cloud native in Korea through an in-depth discussion on how to spread cloud native in the public sector.

  • In recent, the direction of water resources policy is changing from the typical plan for water use and flood control to the sustainable water resources management to improve the quality of life. This change makes the information related to water resources such as data collection, management, and supply is becoming an important concern for decision making of water resources policy. We had analyzed the structured data according to the purpose of providing information on water resources. However, the recent trend is big data and cloud computing which can create new values by linking unstructured data with structured data. Therefore, the trend for the management of water resources information is also changing. According to the paradigm change of information management, this study tried to suggest an application of big data and cloud computing in water resources field for efficient management and use of water. We examined the current state and direction of policy related to water resources information in Korea and an other country. Then we connected volume, velocity and variety which are the three basic components of big data with veracity and value which are additionally mentioned recently. And we discussed the rapid and flexible countermeasures about changes of consumer and increasing big data related to water resources via cloud computing. In the future, the management of water resources information should go to the direction which can enhance the value(Value) of water resources information by big data and cloud computing based on the amount of data(Volume), the speed of data processing(Velocity), the number of types of data(Variety). Also it should enhance the value(Value) of water resources information by the fusion of water and other areas and by the production of accurate information(Veracity) required for water management and prevention of disaster and for protection of life and property.

Estimation of Available Days for a Cloud Seeding Experiment in Korea (한반도 목적별 인공강우 실험가능일 추정)

  • In this study, we investigated the characteristics of the meteorological and environmental conditions for a cloud seeding experiment over the Korean peninsula and estimated the available days for the same. The conditions of available days appropriate for a cloud seeding experiment were classified according to four purposes: water resources, drought relief, forest fire prevention, and air quality improvement. The average number of available days for a cloud seeding experiment were 91.27 (water resources), 45.93-51.11 (drought relief), 40.28-46.00 (forest fire prevention), and 42.19-44.60 days/year (air quality improvement). If six experiments were carried out per available day for a cloud seeding experiment, the number of times cloud seeding experiments could be conducted per year in a continuously operating system were estimated as 547.62 (water resources), 275.58-306.66 (drought relief), 241.68-276.00 (forest fire prevention), and 253.14-267.60 times/year (air quality improvement). From this result, it was possible to determine the appropriate meteorological and environmental conditions and statistically estimate the available days for a cloud seeding experiment. The data on the available days for a cloud seeding experiment might be useful for preparing and performing such an experiment.

  • The fast-emerging of cloud computing technology today has sufficiently benefited its wide range of users from individuals to large organizations. It carries an attractive characteristic by renting myriad virtual storages, computing resources and platform for users to manipulate their data or utilize the processing resources conveniently over Internet without the need to know the exact underlying infrastructure which is resided remotely at cloud servers. However due to the loss of direct control over the systems/applications, users are concerned about the risks of cloud services if it is truly secured. In the literature, there are cases where attackers masquerade as cloud users, illegally access to their accounts, by stealing the static login password or breaking the poor authentication gate. In this paper, we propose a two-factor authentication framework to enforce cloud services' authentication process, which are Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) authentication and mobile out-of-band (OOB) authentication. We discuss the framework's security analysis in later session and conclude that it is robust to phishing and replay attacks, prohibiting fraud users from accessing to the cloud services.

  • Cloud computing is a new paradigm that adopts a pay-as-you-go business model. So, clients can ues the various resources, although they have not own the resources. Already, three big players of IT industry, namely Amazon, Google and Microsoft, develop the many applications for cloud computing. In this paper, we describe the data consistency requirements for cloud computing. Data characteristics of cloud computing is replicated, distributed and large-scaled. And consistency and availability of data cannot be satisfied simultaneously. In this paper, we categorized the applications of cloud computing, and describe requirements of consistency criteria for applications. With this result, we can make the base of consistency criteria that can be adapted for cloud computing, in the near future.
