  • We present our AKARI study of massive star forming regions where a large-scale cloud-cloud collision possibly contributes to massive star formation. Our targets are Spitzer bubbles, which consist of two types of bubbles, closed and broken ones; the latter is a candidate of the objects created by cloud-cloud collisions. We performed mid- and far-infrared surface photometry toward Spitzer bubbles to obtain the relationship between the total infrared luminosity, $L_{IR}$, and the bubble radius, R. As a result, we find that $L_{IR}$ is roughly proportional to $R^{\beta}$ where ${\beta}=2.1{\pm}0.4$. Broken bubbles tend to have larger radii than closed bubbles for the same $L_{IR}$.

  • This paper proposes a new framework for control system design, called the data-based control approach or data space approach, in which the input and output data of a dynamical system is directly and solely used to analyze or design a control system without the employment of any mathematical models like transfer functions, state space equations, and kernel representations. Since, in this approach, most of the analysis and design processes are carried out in the domain of the data space, we introduce some notions of geometrical objects, e.g., the openloop and closed-loop data spaces, which serve as the system representations in the data space. In addition, we establish a relationship between the open-loop and closed-loop data spaces that the closed-loop data space is contained in the open-loop data space as one of its subspaces. By using this relationship, we can derive the data-based stabilization condition for a linear time-invariant discrete-time system, which leads to a linear matrix inequality with a rank constraint.

  • Eigenstructure assignment provides the advantage of allowing great flexibility in shaping the closed-loop system responses by allowing specification of closed-loop eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors. But, the general eigenstructure assignment methodologies cannot guarantee stability robustness to parameter variations of a system. In this paper, we present a novel method that has the capability of exact assignment of an eigenstructure which can consider the probability of instability for LTI (Linear Time-Invariant) systems. The probability of instability of an LTI system is determined by the probability distributions of the closed-loop eigenvalues. The stability region for the system is made probabilistically based upon the Monte Carlo evaluations. The proposed control design method is applied to design a flight control system with probabilistic parameter variations to confirm the usefulness of the method.

  • Natural frequencies of the transνerse vibration of beams with step change in cross-section are obtained by using the asymptotic closed form solution. This closed form solution is found by using WKB method under the assumption of slowly varying properties, such as mass, cross-section, tension etc., along the beam length. However, this solution is found to be still very accurate even in the case of large variation in cross-section and tension. Therefore, this result can be easily applied to many engineering problems.

  • In practical engineering, the uncertain concept plays an important role in the control problems of the vibration structures. In this paper, based on matrix perturbation theory and interval finite element method, the closed-loop vibration control system with uncertain parameters is discussed. A new method is presented to develop an algorithm to estimate the upper and lower bounds of the real parts and imaginary parts of the complex eigenvalues of vibration control systems. The results are derived in terms of physical parameters. The present method is implemented for a vibration control system of the frame structure. To show the validity and effectiveness, we compare the numerical results obtained by the present method with those obtained by the classical random perturbation.

  • An important aspect of video indexing is the ability to segment video into meaningful segments, i.e., content-based video segmentation. Since the audio signal in the sound track is synchronized with image sequences in the video program, a speech signal in the sound track can be used to segment video into meaningful segments. In this paper, we propose a new approach to content-based video segmentation. This approach uses closed caption to construct a recognition network for speech recognition. Accurate time information for video segmentation is then obtained from the speech recognition process. For the video segmentation experiment for TV news programs, we made 56 video summaries successfully from 57 TV news stories. It demonstrates that the proposed scheme is very promising for content-based video segmentation.

  • In this work, a mixed beam approach that combines both the stiffness and the flexibility methods has been performed to analyze the coupled composite blades with closed, two-cell cross-sections. The Reissner's semi-complementary energy functional is used to derive the beam force-displacement relations. Only the membrane part of the shell wall is taken into account to make the analysis simple and also to deliver a clear picture of the mixed method. All the cross section stiffness coefficients as well as the distribution of shear across the section are evaluated in a closed-form through the beam formulation. The theory is validated against experimental test data, detailed finite element analysis results, and other analytical results for coupled composite blades with a two-cell airfoil section. Despite the simple kinematic model adopted in the theory, an accuracy comparable to that of two-dimensional finite element analysis has been obtained for cases considered in this study.

  • The aim of this paper is to increase the performance of hysteresis compensation for Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuators by using inverse Preisach model in closed-loop control system. This is used to reduce hysteresis effects and improve accuracy for the displacement of SMA actuators. Firstly, hysteresis is identified by numerical Preisach model implementation. The geometrical interpretation from first order transition curves is used for hysteresis modeling. Secondly, the inverse Preisach model is formulated and incorporated in closed-loop PID control system in order to obtain desired current-to-displacement relationship with hysteresis reducing. The experimental results for hysteresis compensation by using this method are also shown in this paper.

  • In this paper, we show that the Euler characteristic of an even dimensional closed projectively flat manifold is equal to the total measure which is induced from a probability Borel measure on RP$^{n}$ invariant under the holonomy action, and then discuss its consequences and applications. As an application, we show that the Chen's conjecture is true for a closed affinely flat manifold whose holonomy group action permits an invariant probability Borel measure on RP$^{n}$ ; that is, such a closed affinly flat manifold has a vanishing Euler characteristic.

  • Closed-die forging of spline was analysed using the upper bound elemental technique, Two different forging methods, denoted here as side extrusion-forging and upset forging, were proposed, The kinematically admissible velocity fields for each of the forging methods, which could express trapezoidal, rectangular and serration tooth forms, were presented. Upper bounds to forging loads and deformed configurations were predicted using the velocity fields. Theoretical results were compared with experimental ones. Experiments with lead were carried out at room temperature where grease was used as a lubricant. The present investigation revealed that analytical forging loads were reduced by using the side extrusion-forging but the upset forging could improve configuration of the final forged splines.
