  • This experiment was carried out to determine the value of turfgrass clippings as a source of protein for animal feed. Levels of crude protein(CP) and in vitro dry matter digestibility(JVDMD) were determined for Korean lawngrass (Zoysia Japonica Steud.) under three levels of nitrogen fertilizer ( 0 , 350 and 700kg ha year and three levels of mowing interval between cuts (lO, 20, and 30 days). Sampling was done on the three-year old turffield on which nitrogen and mowing treatments were Imposed. Clippings were collected after mowing, and CP levels were calculated from a measurement of total N(CP = N >< 6.25) l)y Auto-analyser system-2 procedure and IVDMD by Maeng's method which was partly modified with Tilley and Terry's procedure. With the increased nitrogen legime the CP content of leaf clippings varied from 6.6 to 13.6% and that Of stem clippings from 4 to 10.3%. The CP levels of clippings were directly proportional to the N fertilization rate. The highest CP content was recorded in early July when it was 14.1% at 35OkgN ha -and I 18.l%kgN ha-1 with 10-wcek mowing interval. Mowing interval had little effect on the CP content in both leaf and stem clippings. The level of IVDMD in the Korean lawngrass clippings varied with mowing interval. The highest level measured was 47%, hut this varied during the growing season and occurred in the following order : early summer > summer > fall. This experiment has shown that Korean lawngrass clippings can he helpful source of protein for use in some animal feeds and that a high concentration of CP can occur depending upon N fertllizer and that of I VDM I) upon mowing practices.

  • Objectives : A postoperative hydrocephalus is compromises the clinical outcome of patients with aneurysmal clippings as one of the major complications of SAH. Subdural hygroma is often complicated after aneurysmal clippings, which subsides spontaneously as simple hygroma, or progresses to shunt-dependent hydrocephalus (SDHC). To predict development of SDHC from the hygroma, and to improve clinical outcome of patients with aneurysmal clippings, we analyzed clinical predisposing factors between 2 subgroups, simple hygroma and SDHC. Patients and Methods : A retrospective study of 232 consecutive cases of clipped aneurysmal patient was undertaken in our hospital for last two years. The 46 patients(19.8%) developed hygromas after aneurysmal clippings. There were 22 cases with simple hygroma(9.5%), and 24 patients with SDHC(10.3%). Comparison of 2 subgroups was made for various clinical and radiological factors. Results : Older age(p=0.03), poor preoperative clinical grade(p=0.01), high Fisher grade(p=0.005), large amount of hygroma(p=0.014) and increased size of lateral ventricle ipsilateral to hygroma(p=0.001) were correlated significantly with SDHC. There was no statistical significance in sex, aneurysmal location and presence of acute preoperative ventricular dilatation between 2 subgroups. Conclusion : The clinical factors, such as older age, poor preoperative clinical grade, high Fisher grade, large amount of hygroma and increased size of lateral ventricle ipsilateral to hygroma showed statistical sinificance for differentiating SDHC from simple hygroma.

  • This work was based on the hypotheses that fingernail clippings can be used as a biomarker for the subchronic exposure to fluoride. This study was conducted to prove the hypotheses and fingernail clippings were collected form 120 preschool children aged $3{\sim}6$ residing in Jumunjin(community water fluoridation area) and Kangnung(non-fluoridation area). The acid-diffusible fluoride in the fingernail clipping was isolated by the acid-diffusion technique and measured with a fluoride electrode. The mean fingernail fluoride as the children's living area were 4.49ug/g(SD 2.43) to Jumunjin and 2.68ug/g(SD 1.13) to Kangnung. As would be expected, the fluoride concentration in fingernail clippings were significantly different between the two geographical groups(p<0.001) determined by t-test.

  • Organic fertilizers are divided into natural organic and synthetic organics. The benefits of natural organic fertilizer were reported from the previous researches. The previous researches have reported that clippings are nitrogen source for turfgrass growth. However, the limited research results about clippings as a source of natural organic fertilizers were reported. The objective of the research to investigate effects of liquid fertilizer produced from fermented clippings for creeping bentgrass growth. Liquid fertilizer (LF) produced was used for the research to be compared with urea and two natural organic fertilizers of different source (NO-1 and NO-2). Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L., Midnight) was used for the study. Turfgrass quality was measured by visual evaluation every two weeks from June to October, 2011 using a scale of 1 to 9 (1=worst, 6=acceptable, and 9=best). LF produced greater turfgrass quality than acceptable quality, especially with the summer period while urea and NO produced lower turfgrass quality than acceptable quality of 6. LF had less quality alteration than urea and NO during the study. Based on the result of the study, LF are more stable to maintain turfgrass quality than urea and NO.

  • The plant growth and net production, the nitrogen uptake and recycling, the nitrogen mobility and allocation to each organ, and the nitrogen utility from the Italian rye grass field during the population development were analyzed in comparison with different clipping treatments. The maximum dry matter standing crop and nitrogen quantity of harvest increased significantly, however, the annual amounts of dry matter and nitrogen assimilation showed little variations with increasing clipping frequencies. Plants treated with frequent clippings allocated relatively more nitrogen to leaves and less to roots during the experimental period. The amount of recycling of nitrogen decreased considerably due to frequent clippings. The annual averages of nitrogen utility indices changed in inverse relation to the nitrogen availability; such as 63, 58, 44 and 35 for C, A, M and J plots, respectively.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the biological activities of grass clippings from turfgrass including Zoysia japonica (TG-1), Zoysia matella (TG-2), Agrostis palustris (TG-3), and Poa pratensis (TG-4). The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity was relatively higher in TG-1 and -2. Especially, TG-1 exerted the strongest hydroxyl radical scavenging effect, showing 90.40% at the concentration of 100 μg/ml. In addition, TG-1 inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Helicobactor pylori. TG-1 also showed the highest inhibitory effect of AGS human gastric adenocarcinoma cell growth and nitric oxide production against lipopolysaccharide in RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. In conclusion, among the TG extracts, TG-1 has anti-oxidative, anti-microbial, anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory effect, indicating that TG-1 may be the potential source of functional food.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the vegetative growth of two cool season turfgrasses during summer season in Korea. Ten respective cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass [Poapratensis L.] and perennial ryegrass [Lolium perenne L.] were exposed to unshaded, 30% and 60% shade for 4odays. First mowing height was 7cm, and then clippings were harvested every ten days at the same height. Shading increased the total length of clippings of all cultivars of two turfgrasses, but fresh and dry weight were significantly decreased. The highest shoot length obtained at 30% shade in Kentucky bluegrass and at 60% shade in perennial ryegrass. 'Rugky', 'Sydsport', 'Wabash' and 'Baron' of Kentucky bluegrass and 'Repel', 'Omega II', 'Ovation', 'Linn', 'Bell' and 'Manhattan' of perennial ryegrass showed relatively high tolerance to shade. Especially, in 'Citation II' perennial ryegrass, fresh and dry weight were increased by 30% shade. The number of tillers generally decreased with increasing shade. In 30% shade, 'Midnight' Kentucky bluegrass and 'Omega II' perennial ryegrass were least reduced and 'Baron' Kentucky bluegrass and 'Pennant' perennial ryegrass were most reduced. The cultivars of lower growth habit in full sunlight showed shade tolerance compared to those of higher growth habit.

  • This study assessed the biochemical methane potential (Bu-P) of three grass species-Poa pratensis (PP), Zoysia japonica (ZJ), and Agrostis stolonifera (AS). Bu-P values were determined as 0.330 Nm3/kg-VSadded for PP, 0.297 Nm3/kg-VSadded for ZJ, and 0.261 Nm3/kg-VSadded for AS. Notably, PP exhibited superior suitability for methane production. The investigation also examined the impact of silage storage duration on PP grass clippings, revealing a 19% decline in Bu-P from an initial value of 0.269 Nm3/kg-VSadded on day 0 to 0.217 Nm3/kg-VSadded on day 180. Throughout the storage period, there were significant increases in neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), and crude protein (CP) contents, rising from 67.59%, 39.68%, and 3.02% on day 0 to 77.12%, 54.65%, and 6.24% on day 180, respectively. These findings highlight the influence of storage duration on the anaerobic digestibility of PP grass clippings. To effectively utilize grass clippings as a renewable resource for methane production, further studies considering factors such as initial moisture content, pretreatment methods, and potential effects of residual pesticides are necessary to optimize anaerobic digestion efficiency for herbaceous biomass.
