Manufacture of Ordinary Portland Cement Clinker Using Cement Paste of the Waste Concrete (폐콘크리트로부터 회수된 시멘트 페이스트 미분말의 시멘트 원료화 연구)

  • The fine powder produced by heating and grinding of the waste concrete in the waste construction was investigated whether utilize as substitution raw material of SiO$_2$, CaO, and Al$_2$O$_3$ source for OPC clinker manufacture is possible or not. In order to synthesize OPC clinker, limestone, shale, converter slag and fly ash were used as main raw materials, and modulus was fixed LSF 91.0, SM 2.60, IM 1.60. The synthesized clinkers were characterized. The Main products of synthesized clinker were C$_3$S, ${\beta}$-C$_2$S, C$_3$A, C$_4$AF as OPC clinker at 1,43$^{\circ}C$. As a result of TG-DTA and burnability index(B.U) analysis of each raw mixtures, the formation temperature of clinker phases was similar and B.I was showed easy burning as 48.6∼51.4.

  • The characteristic analysis of cement clinker using light microscope can evaluate not only the quality of cement but also making process. Thus this study analyzed clinkers having different burning conditions by reflective light microscope. As heating and cooling rates is decreased, alite and belite minerals grew and especially cooling rate had an effect on the growth of belite. Futhermore as the retention time in max. temperature got longer by twenty minutes, alite and belite minerals grew more about 5 $\mu\textrm{m}$. In the case of temperature 1400$^{\circ}C$ in max, the size of belite was suitable but alite was not suitable with the size of 10~15 $\mu\textrm{m}$.

  • Effect of alkali $SO_3$ and $C_2S$ content and cooling condition of clinker on the formation of unstable alkali and cooling condition of clinker on the formation of unstable alkali was investigated. As a result alkali and $SO_3$ content of clinker were the main factors of unstable alkali formation and equation (7) in which the two factors were the variables showed a good agreement with the observed results. Water soluble alkali content of sulphate was decreased with increase of $C_2S$ content of clinker resulted by the increase of solid solution rate of alkali to clinker minerals. But change of unsatble alkali content accordint to the increase of $C_2S$ content was slight. A increasing tendency of ignition loss of clinker with increase of unstable alkali content was found.

  • As the major alumina source, domestic alunite was applied to synthesize the clinker for rapid hardening cement. The main minerals of the clinker were found to be C3S, C11A7-CaF2 and some C4AF by means of chemical treatment, x-ray diffraction analysis and microscopic observation. Rapid hardening cement was made of the clinker by adding suitable amount of hemi-hydrite and anhydrite. The setting time of the cement was regulated with citric acid as setter.

  • For the development of low energy cement, the belite cement clinker of calcium sulphoaluminate ferrite type was synthesized at 130$0^{\circ}C$ and containing C2S, C4A3S as the major minerals along with C3A, C4AF, CS by using limestone, dolomite, clay, iron ore, gypsum and alumina as raw materials. At over 130$0^{\circ}C$, C4A3S was decomposed and thus C3A was increased. When hydrated, this cement was hardened, producing ettringite, CSH, etc.

  • This study has been carried out to use the municipal solid waste sewage sludge ash generated at sewage disposal field as the raw materials of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). Limestone, shale, converter slag, and fly ash were used as the main raw materials. After the raw materials were mixed, these were fired at 1,300, 1,350, 1,400, 1,450, and 1,500$^{\circ}C$ for 1 h and cooled rapidly in air. The properties of clinker synthesized were examined with XRD, SEM, and burnability index by polysius method.

  • With the increase of ZnO content, burnability of raw materials was improved and the formation of clinker minerals was accellerated. When ZnO was added 1wt%, the clinkering temperature was decreased about 30~5$0^{\circ}C$. As an increase of ZnO added, aluminate phase was decreased and ferrite phase was increased. When ZnO was added more than 3.0wt.%, the new phases, such as ZnO.Al2O3 and ZnO.Fe2O3 were formed. In the excess of amount of ZnO added, the decomposition of alite phase was intensed and the lamella structure in belite could not be observed due to the decomposition.

  • It was found that the burnability of raw mix and characteristics of clinker was affected by the difference in grades of limestones. The thermal decomposition temperature of raw mix which used low grade limestone was lower than that of high grade, and the fast formation of $C_2S$ was due to the rich content of calcite and quartz over critical grain size, which caused the bad effects in the burnability, but $C_3S$ was formed slowly. The structure of clinker had many pores, and the growth of clinker minerals was inferior.

  • For the raw materials of 3CaO$\cdot$3Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ $\cdot$CaSO$_{4}$(CSA) clinker manufacturing, the applications of industrial wastes such as waste shell, spent oil-refining catalyst and desulfurized gypsum were examined. The c1inkerbility of the raw mix and the behaviour of formation of clinker minerals were studied and then some hydraulic properties of cements containing the clinker were also investigated. By virtue of the high reactivity of thermally decomposed raw materials, CSA clinkers were obtained at relatively low temperature of 1250$^{\circ}C$ and thus oil-refining catalysts were more desirable than aluminium hydroxide as an aluminous raw material. The expansive cement samples showed somewhat lower flow value than that of OPC, but their compressive strengths were developed earlier and higher than that of OPC due to formation of ettringite in the early hydration time, which indicated the possibility of practical use of low-cost CSA clinker using industrial wastes only.

  • The effects of borax on the phase formation of C2S, C4A3 and $\alpha$'-C2S phases. It has negative effects on formation of C4A3 And it lowers the forming temperature of C4AF. It also has been found that borax improves the clinkerization of MBC. In the MBC clinker with borax 3% C2S have larger and more irregular shapes, larger C/S mole ratio and C4A3 have smaller size larger C/ molr ratio than in the clinker without borax.
