  • A surface resisting protein adsorption and cell adhesion is highly desirable for many biomedical applications such as diagnostic devices, biosensors and blood-contacting devices. In this study, a surface conjugated with sulfobetaine molecules was fabricated via the click reaction for the anti-fouling purpose. An alkyne-containing substrate (Alkyne-PPX) was generated by chemical vapor deposition of 4-ethynyl-[2,2]paracyclophane. Azide-ended mono-sulfobetaine molecules were synthesized and then conjugated on Alkyne-PPX via the click reaction. The protein adsorption from 10% serum was reduced by 57%, while the attachment of L929 cells was reduced by 83% onto the sulfobetaine-PPX surface compared to the protein adsorption and cell adhesion on Alkyne-PPX. In conclusion, we demonstrate that conjugation of mono-sulfobetaine molecules via the click chemistry is an effective way for reduction of non-specific protein adsorption and cell attachment.

  • The convergent synthesis of symmetric PAMAM-like dendrimers from azide-functionalized poly(amido- amine) (PAMAM) dendrons and two different multi-alkynes was investigated. The stitching method was based on the click chemistry protocol, i.e., the copper-catalyzed cycloaddition reaction between an alkyne and an azide.

  • A bent-shape triazolyl derivative was synthesized via click chemistry, and its photophysical property was investigated in various solvents. In contrast to the invisible ultraviolet emission of other solutions, the chloroform solution exhibited a blue light emission at 460 nm. Furthermore, the blue fluorescence intensified as the UV exposure time at 365 nm increased. On the basis of $^1H$-NMR, pH paper, and acid-addition studies, we confirmed that chloroform was decomposed into HCl with the aid of the triazolyl derivative. The density functional theory calculations suggested that the eye-detectable blue fluorescence was attributed to an intramolecular charge transfer process of the protonated triazolyl derivative in the chloroform solution.

  • A series of hydrophilic chromophores was synthesized through introduction of dendritic sulfonate anions using click chemistry. A dendron structure bearing several sulfonate groups enhances hydrophilicity of attached chromophores. A click triazole formation connects chromophores with hydrophilic groups. A neutral trichloroethyl sulfonate has versatile features such as easy introduction, chemical endurance for isolation or storage, and convenient transformation to a hydrophilic anion. Zinc and OH mediated cleavage of trichloroethyl group from the neutral sulfonate undergoes to generate a water-soluble sulfonate anion. The solubility was examined with different counter cations and in different pH media and thus increased with the number of attached sulfonate ion. Two hydrophilic chromophores of stilbene-derived and azobenzene-derived dipolar structures exhibit clear negative and positive solvatochromism in protic solvents, respectively.

  • Dendronized linear polymers have recently come forward as new materials for nanoscale applications. These "molecular cylinders" may be modified with specific chemical makeup, rigidity, surface decoration, and backbone properties much like their spherical analogs, dendrimers. There exist three main synthetic pathways to yield dendronized polymers: (i) graft-to; (ii) graft-from; and (iii) macromonomer. We present an efficient "graft-to" approach towards dendronized microstructures utilizing click chemistry. With the capacity to manipulate their chemical composition, these dendronized structures have already found broad use in site-isolation for catalysis, nanolithography and organic light emitting diodes. These and other potential applications of these materials will be also presented.

  • $^{18}F$-labeling reaction of bioactive molecule via click chemistry is widely used to produce $^{18}F$-labeled radiotracer in the field of radiopharmaceutical science and molecular imaging. In particular, bioorthogonal strain-promoted alkyne-azide cycloaddition (SPAAC) reaction has received much attention as an alternative ligation method for radiolabeling bioactive molecules such as peptides, DNA, proteins as well as nanoparticles. Moreover, SPAAC based pretargeting method could provide tumor images successfully on positron emission tomography system using nanoparticle such as mesoporous silica nanoparticles.
