  • An influences of gap clearance, pressure and applied voltage shape on breakdown characteristics are investigated by using a rod-to-plane electrode in $SF_6$ gas. In case of D.C and A.C, a corona stabilization effect increases the breakdown voltage remarkably for lower pressure than 0.2MPa, whereas incase of negative D.C this effect exists independently of gas pressure. This suggests that an insulation optimization in a pratical apparatus is needed to prevent a corona appearance through the removal of local field enhancement.

  • In this paper, a robot assembly wrist, which is able to assemble chamferless parts, has been developed. The RCC (Remote Center Compliance) structure is used as a basic structure. 5 position sensors and 4 pneumatic actuators are installed additionally to measure the deformation of RCC structure and correct the errors actively. Due to the restricted direction of actuation, a decision rule which selects the suitable actuator according to the position sensor signals is needed. For this purpose, a neural network is used and it is experimentally shown that the nerual network overcomes system's nonlinearity. This paper presents fundamental experiment results for the insertion of parts with several clearance.

  • Finite element models were constructed to analyze the mechanical behavior of a three unit fixed partial denture (FPD) with a 2nd premolar and 2nd molar abutment either employing a rigid and nonrigid connector. Gap elements were used to model the clearance space of the nonrigid connector. 1. High stress was generated in the FPD and supporting abutment around the rigid connector. 2. The pattern of stress and deflection is very similar between vertically and 20 degree mesially tilted nonrigid connector at the distal aspect of premolar abutment. 3. FPD with an inverted nonrigid connectors exhibited the worst undesirable mechanical stress states and deformations. 4. Nonrigid connector of normal orientation transmit the load to the abutment tooth, but inverted connector doesn't transmit the force.

  • This work analyzes the behaviors of aerated lubricant in the gap between con-rod bearing and journal. It is assumed that the film formation with aerated lubricant is influenced by the two major factors. One is the density characteristics of the lubricant due to the volume change of lubricant for the formation of bubbles and the other is the viscosity characteristics of the lubricant due to the surface tension of the bubble in the lubricant. These two major factors surprisingly increase the load capacity in some ranges of bubble sizes and densities. Modified Reynolds' equation is developed for the computation of fluid film pressure with the effects of aeration ratio in the lubricant. From the calculated load capacity by solving modified Reynolds' equation, journal locus is computed with Mobility method after comparing it with the applied load at each time step. The differences of journal orbits between aerated and pure lubricants are shown in the computed results.

  • Lubrication characteristics between a cylinder block and a valve plate for high speed bent-axis type hydraulic pump play an important role in volumetric efficiency and durability of pump. In this paper, a finite element method is presented for the computation of the pressure distribution between a cylinder block and a valve plate for high speed bent-axis type hydraulic pump. Also, a Runge-Kutta method is applied to simulate the cylinder block dynamics of three-degrees of freedom motion. From the results of computation, we can draw two major conclusions. One is related to the fluid film characteristics between a cylinder block and a valve plate and the other is related to the average leakage that is determined by the pressure gradient and the clearance near the discharge port. The numerical results of cylinder block dynamics were compared with the experimental results using eddy-current type gap sensors those are fixed at a pump housing.

  • Elastomeric O-ring seals are widely used in static and dynamic applications. A compressed and highly pressurized O-ring seal inserted under laterally one-sided constrained condition has been analyzed experimentally and numerically. The deformed shape and extrusion length of the O-ring under high pressure has been measured by the computed tomography. Through the comparison of experimental and FE results, the numerical analysis technique has been verified. Using verified FE method, the contact stress profiles at sealing surfaces have been investigated and their relevance to the 0-ring performance evaluated based on stress-related and displacement-related parameters. It has been found that the contact stress profiles and deformation behaviors of the seal are affected by friction coefficient, gap clearance, and pressure considerably.

  • Piston slap is one of the major sources of noise in a 4-cycle diesel engine. Piston slap is not only one of major source mounted near the top and bottom of the piston thrust and antithrust skirts. Effects of engine speed, load and coolant temperature on piston motion were investigated. The measured piston motion showed 6 slapes per cycle resulting from the change of side force. Major piston slap timing was retarded as engine speeds became higher. The increase of engine load made large piston transverse movement toward thrust side of cylinder block. Piston transverse movement was due to reduced piston-liner clearance at higher coolant temperature.

  • This paper presents design of a vehicle stop-and-go cruise control strategy based on analyzed results of the manual driving data. Human drivers driving characteristics have been investigated using vehicle driving data obtained from 100 participants on low speed urban traffic ways. The control algorithm has been designed to incorporate the driving characteristics of the human drivers and to achieve natural vehicle behavior of the controlled vehicle that would feel comfortable to the human driver under low speed stop-and-go driving conditions. Vehicle following characteristics of the cruise controlled vehicle have been investigated using a validated vehicle simulator and real driving radar sensor data.

  • The fundamental fluid mechanics associated with the rotation of a smooth plane disk enclosed within a cylindrical chamber have been studied experimentally. In order to acquire systematic information pertinent to this problem torque and friction loss data were obtained over a wide range of disk Reynolds numbers for axial clearance-disk radius ratio H/R from 0.025 to 0.2 and radial tip gap-disk radius ratio s/R from 0.021 to 0.105. Loss analysis of hard disk drive (HDD) is presented to describe the contribution of windage loss of a rotating disk. The minimum loss form factor of HDD can be obtained from this analysis at each operation conditions.

  • A free piston and free displacer(FPFD) Stirling cryocooler for cooling infrared and cryo-sensors is currently under development at KIMM(Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials). The FPFD Stirling cryocooler employs 1) the Stirling cycle for refrigeration, 2) linear motors for driving the cryocooler, 3) spring and gas support systems, and 4) fine gap for clearance seals. It is the most suitable design for a mechanical cryocooler utilized in night vision environment. The experimental results show KIMM-E1 Stirling cryocooler (with expander manufactured by KIMM) has the higher cooling power and faster response time at optimum charging pressure.
