Dynamic characteristics of the clearance flow between an axially oscillating rotational disk and a stationary disk were examined by experiments and computations based on a bulk flow model. In the case without pressure fluctuations at the inlet and outlet of the clearance, parallel and contracting flow paths had an effect to stabilize the axial oscillation of the rotating disk. The enlarged flow path had an effect to destabilize the axial oscillation due to the negative damping and stiffness for outward and inward flows, respectively. It was shown that the fluid force can be decomposed into the component caused by the inlet or outlet pressure fluctuation without the axial oscillation and that due to the axial oscillation without the inlet or outlet pressure fluctuation. A method to predict the stiffness and damping coefficients is proposed for general cases when the device is combined with an arbitrary flow system.

A numerical simulation of heat and fluid flow for predicting the effect of passage arrangement in automotive heat battery has been performed. The system is assumed to be a two-dimensional laminar flow and isothermal boundary is applied to the surface of the latent heat storage vessel. In the case of ideal heat battery the flow rate into each flow passage is evenly distributed. The various models are considered in the view of pressure drop and bulk temperature. The effects on the efficiency of the heat battery are examined by varying geometrical factors such as flow passage clearance, length of a inlet and outlet tank and the length of a latent heat storage vessel. The flow clearance is a very important -factor on the efficiency of a heat battery. As the flow passage clearance becomes narrow, the flow distribution becomes uniform and the bulk temperature increases, however the pressure drop is large. Therefore, optimal flow passage clearance has to be chosen. The present work can be used in optimizing heat battery efficiency.

Currently, a new generation of ducted fan UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) is under development for a wide range of inspection, investigation and combat missions as well as for a variety of civil roles like traffic monitoring, meteorological studies, hazard mitigation etc. The current study presents extensive results obtained experimentally in order to investigate the tip clearance effects on performance characteristics of a ducted fan for small UAV systems. Three ducted fans having different tip clearance gap and with same rotor size were examined under three different yawed conditions of calibrated slanted hot-wire probe. Three dimensional velocity flow fields were measured from hub to tip at outlet of the ducted fan. The analysis of data were done by PLEAT (Phase locked Ensemble Averaging Technique) and three non-linear differential equations were solved simultaneously by using Newton -Rhapson numerical method. Flow field characteristics such as tip vortex and secondary flow were confirmed through axial, radial and tangential velocity contour plots. At the same time, the effects of tip clearance on axial thrust and input power were also investigated by using wind tunnel measurement system. For enhancing the performance of ducted fan, tip clearance level should be as small as possible.
The clearance of ICG, a known hepatic blood flow marker was investigated in rats in order to examine whether DDB-S influences hepatic blood flow. The effect of DDB-S on the protein binding and blood-to-plasma partition of ICG was measured. The steady-state plasma concentration of ICG was monitored before and after co-administration of various concentration of DDB-S, and ICG clearance was estimated from the steady-state concentration and the infusion rate of ICG. There was no significant difference in protein binding and blood-to-plasma partition of ICG with and without addition of DDB-S (10, 20, and 40 ${\mu}g/mL)$. When ICG was infused into DDB-S pretreated rats, the steady-state concentrations of ICG decreased and the calculated ICG clearance increased. However, no dose-dependency of ICG Css on DDB-S Css was observed. Since DDB-S did not affect the protein binding and blood-to-plasma partition of ICG, the increased clearance of ICG with co-administration of DDB-S seems to be due to the increased hepatic blood flow by DDB-S.
In this study, the expansion, stress, and operating clearance of bearing elements during operation are observed using the inner/outer ring temperature test data of a 3.0×106 DN-class roller bearing. The operating clearance characteristics of inner-/outer-ring cooling (IORC) bearings are compared to those of inner-ring cooling (IRC) bearings. For IRC bearings, the thermal expansion of the outer ring is the most important factor in clearance variation. As a result, the operating clearance is less than the initial clearance of 61 ㎛, and the operating clearance decreases to 0.5 ㎛ at 25,500 rpm. Conversely, the temperature of the outer ring of IORC bearings is lower than that of IRC bearings, so the operating clearance is kept smaller. When the coolant flow rate to the outer ring is approximately 1.5 to 2.0 L/min, the temperature difference between the inner and outer rings is minimized and the operating clearance is maintained at a significantly lower level than IRC bearings. Small operating clearances are expected to be effective in reducing cage slip and skid damage in roller bearings. The results and analysis procedures of this study can be utilized to design of bearing clearance, lubricant flow rate, and assembled interference in the early design stage of aerospace roller bearings.
The effect of tip clearance is important part for turbomachinery performance. Tip leakage flow due to tip clearance is mixed with passage vortex. Large amount of loss is generated at the mixing region and overall performance of turbomachinery is reduced. Numerical calculation of the 1st stage rotor of GE7FA gas turbine is carried out to investigate tip clearance effect on performance, pitchwise variations of velocity profiles, pressure distributions and loss coefficients. A commercial code, CFX-TascFlow is validated in this study.

This experimental study investigated the effect of tip clearance and bypass flow on the cooling performance of a straight fin heat sink. Both the horizontal and vertical directions of the bypass flow were studied by using a mass flow controller and test sections. The thermal resistance of a heat sink was obtained to elucidate the response of the cooling performance to tip clearance and bypass flow. The thermal resistance of a straight fin heat sink gradually increases with increasing tip clearance. A flow guide unit was employed to reduce the bypass flow. An optimal distance from the leading edge of the heat sink to the flow guide unit was found for the fixed volume flow rate. The contribution of the flow guide unit to the thermal performance of a heat sink increases with increasing volume flow rate.
This paper presents a quasi-3-dimensional calculation method considering secondary flows in the impellers of diagonal flow blowers. A Quantitative estimation of the secondary flow effects is made by using secondary flow theories. In order to verify the validity of the adopted models, that is, span-wise mixing model and the tip clearance model, numerical simulations are performed for two different types of impellers of diagonal flow blowers which are designed differently. Numerical experiments are conducted for each of a constant tangential velocity type impeller, and a free vortex type impeller, both at two different flow coefficients. According to the simulation results, it was found that the present model considering span-wise mixing and tip clearance effect shows better agreements with the experimental data than those without these models in terms of the flow velocity and the angle distribution.

Reducing the losses of the tip clearance flow is one of the keys in an unshrouded centrifugal compressor design and development because tip clearances are large in relation to the span of the blades and also centrifugal compressors produce a sufficiently large pressure rise in single stage. This problem is more acute for a low flow high-pressure ratio impeller design. The large tip clearance would cause flow separations, and as a result it would drop both the efficiency and surge margin. Thus a design of a high efficiency and wide operation range low flow coefficient centrifugal compressor is a great challenge. This paper describes a recent development of high efficiency and wide surge margin low flow coefficient centrifugal compressor. A viscous turbomachinery optimal design method developed by the authors for axial flow machine was further extended and used in the centrifugal compressor design. The compressor has three main parts: impeller, a low solidity diffuser and volute. The tip clearance is under a special consideration in this design to allow impeller insensitiveness to the clearance. A patented three-dimensional low solidity diffuser design method is used and applied to this design. The compressor test results demonstrated to be successful to extend the low solidity diffusers to high-pressure ratio compressor. The compressor stage performance showed the total to static efficiency of the compressor being about 85% and stability range over 35%. The test results are in good agreement with the design.
In this study, the overall performance and the effect of the tip leakage flow of the centrifugal compressor with a refrigerant HFC-l34a were numerically studied using CFX-TASCflow. To study the effect of the tip leakage flow, the numerical study of the overall performance of HFC-l34a centrifugal compressor with a cascade diffuser was preceded and compared with the experimental result. Six different tip clearances were used to consider the influence of the tip clearance on the performance. The tip leakage flow was illustrated for qualitative discussion. The results obtained in this study can be applied to the determination of the cold clearance.
