  • Herbal medicine has been traditional used for prevention and treatment of treatment of disease, because herbal medicine has few side effects in the human body. Anti-medicines such as antimicrobial medicine and anti-cancer medicine, which contains herbal medicine, are being studied vigorously by researchers. The effects of Geum Japonicum Thumb are restorative, blood circulation and detoxification. It also treats hematemesis, menstruation and furunculus. The ingredients of Geum Japonicum Thumb include geoside and tannin. The study measured antioxidative activation and antifungal activation by using Geum Japonicum Thumb water and methanol extract. The crude extract, which was used for this study, was Korean herbal medicine and the results are as follows. As Geum Japonicum Thumb extracts get stronger, the antioxidative activation tended to increase. The antioxidative activation hit its peak when the density of methanol extract was 120ug/ml. The experiment showed that a 1.0mm clear zone appeared when the density of the Geum Japonicum Thumb methanol extracts were 1000ug/ml in the Staphylococcus epidermidis and 1.1mm clear zone at Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The results of this study concludes that the antioxidative activation is lubricated in the Geum Japonicum Thumb extracts. In addition, the antifungal activation occurred in the fungus of the Staphylococcus epidermidis and the Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

  • A chitinase-producing bacterium was isolated from seashore mud around Beobseongpo in Chunnam province by selective enrichment culture, and among it, one isolate which was the best in producing of chitinase was selected. Nutrient or MacConkey medium was confirmed with secreting of prodigiosin pigment by Serratia sp. JM, and it was performed by the production of clear zone on medium containing chitin. Serratia sp. JM was almost same compared with Serratia marcescens ATCC 27117 in respect of its morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics except succinic, urea and pyruvic acid. Serratia sp. JM was resistant to tetracycline but was not resistant to kanamycin and chloramphenicol. The optimal temperature and pH for the production of chitinase from Serratia sp. JM were $30^{\circ}C$ and 7.5, respectively. Production of chitinase and pH in the medium increased until the cultivation of 120 hours, but after 120 hours, they were decreased due to the acetic acid accumulated from degradation of chitin by Serratia sp. JM.

  • Antimicrobial activity of Mokdan bark (Paeonia suffruticosa $A_{NDR}$) was investigated. Methanol extract of dried Mokdan was fractionated to hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate, butanol and aqueous fraction. Ethylacetate fraction among these fractions showed the highest inhibitory effect on the microorganisms such as L. monocytogenes, and E. coli at 500 $\mu\textrm{g}$/disc. Ethylacetate fraction was further fractionated into 3 fractions by silica gel column and thin layer chromatography (TLC). The results showed that ethylacetate fractions No. 1 and 2 had the highest antimicrobial activity. They were mixed again, reseparated, and 3 fractions were obtained. Among them, No. 1 had the highest inhibitory effect on the microorganisms, No. 1 fraction was identified as isobutyl isopentanoate by HPLC, and GC-MS.

  • Antifibrinolytic effect of lumbrokinase in mice, in vivo, was studied. Liquid phase lumbrokinse from Lumbricus rubellus was purified by column chromatography method. Lumbrokinase was orally inserted to mice. Although oral dosage of lumbrokinase, to investigate whether lumbrokinase in mice causes antifibrinolytic effect, we have concentration of lumbrokinase varied, and detection of antifibrinolytic effect was carried out using a FDP (fibrin degradation product) test and euglobulin fibrinolytic activity test. FDP test and euglobulin fibrinolytic activity test were compared the data of PBS ingestion. control with lumbrokinase ingestion. As a result, FDP was increased in 7.8mg, 26mg lumbrokinase concentrations after 25 hours succeeding oral prescription of lumbrokinase, and decreased after 49 hours, but 7.8mg lumbrokinase ingestion more increased than 26mg. Also, FDP of PBS ingestion control and 1.3mg lumbrokinase ingestion were not been observed nothing. Euglobulin fibrinolytic activity of PBS ingestion control and 1.3mg lumbrokinase ingestion were not been observed any clear zone after 8, 25, 48 hours, and 7.8mg and 26mg were observed the most largest clear zone after 25 hours and decreased after 48 hours. However, antifibrinolytic effect of oral prescription of lumbrokinase in mice was observed. Now we need to determine an efficient amount of lumbrokinase for antifibrinolytic effect.

  • The antimicrobial activities of Helicobacter pylori as a functional food source with water and 60% ethanol extracts from Rododendron mucronulatum Turcz. flowers were examined. The total phenol content of 60% ethanol extracts (30.6${\pm}$0.14 mg/g) from Rododendron mucronulatum Turcz. flowers was higher than that of water extracts (23.2${\pm}$0.21 mg/g). The inhibitory activities of Rododendron mucronulatum Turcz. extracts on H. pylori was determined to clear zone of 15 mm in 80% ethanol extracts. Purification of inhibitory compounds was carried out in Sephadex LH-20 and MCI-gel CHP-20 column chromatography using a gradient procedure, with increasing ethanol(0${\rightarrow}$100%) in $H_2O$. The chemical structure of the purified inhibitory compounds of H. pylori was identified to be quercitrin (quercetin-3-O- rhamnopyranoside), myricitrin (myricetin-3-O-rhamnopyranoside), quercetin by FAB-MS, NMR and IR spectra.

  • This research evaluated antibacterial and growth inhibition effects on three kinds of lactic acid bacteria and five kinds of food poisoning bacteria using Backryencho powder, hot water, 70% ethanol, and 95% ethanol extracts. Antibacterial activity was shown against Leu. mensenteroides for 8 and 10 mg/disc of the 95% ethanol extract solution and strong proliferation inhibition effects were displayed against B. subtilis, Stap. aureus, E. coli, and S. typhimurium. High antibacterial activity according to certain clear zone formations was shown especially for the 10 mg/disc. A 3% concentration of the 95% ethanol extract showed high growth inhibition effects against lactic acid bacteria, L. brevis, L. plantarum, and Leu. mesenteroids. The measurement of viable cell counts of S. aureus, E. coli, B. subtilis, and S. typhimurium indicated suppression effects by the 3% concentration of the 95% ethanol extract, at 49.60%, 41.54%, 35.95%, 28.82%, and 26.60% respectively. The antibacterial activities of the hot water, 70% ethanol, 95% ethanol extract of Backryencho against food poisoning bacteria and Kimchi fermentation lactic acid bacteria were confirmed through various methods of antibiotic measurement. Based on these results, Backryencho extract is considered a good source for a range of applications as a natural anti-bacterial agent for the storage ability of Kimchi and as a possible food preservative.
