Automated weather stations were installed at 9 locations with, three different elevations, (i.e., 50m, 100m, and 300m a.s.l.) with different slope and aspect in a small watershed ($50km^2$ area). Air temperature at 1500 LST and solar radiation accumulated for 1100-1500 LST were collected from January to December 2012. Topography of the study area was defined by a $30{\times}30$ m digital elevation model (DEM) grid. Accumulated solar irradiance was calculated for each location with the spatially averaged slope and aspect of surrounding circles with 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 grid cell radii, respectively. The 1500 LST air temperature from clear sky conditions with zero cloud amount was regressed to the 1100-1500 LST solar irradiance at 9 locations. We found the highest coefficient of determination ($r^2$ = 0.544) at 25 grid cell radius and the temperature variation in this study was explained by Y = 0.8309X + 0.0438, where Y is 1500 LST temperature (in $^{\circ}C$) and X is 1100-1500 LST accumulated solar irradiance (in $MJ/m^2$).

Recirculation of airmass in coastal region occurs because of the change from land to sea breeze and was shown to produce a contrary result on air quality. This study examines the numerical simulation to analyze the effect of recirculation flow in Gwangyang Bay, Korea. For this purpose two case studies are performed by the WRF-FLEXPART-CMAQ modeling system, each for a different Meso-Synoptic Index. Additionally this research make a comparative study of large domain (Domain L) and small domain (Domain S). The horizontal wind fields are simulated from WRF. Changes in the land-sea breeze have an effect on the particle dispersion modeling. The numerical simulation of air quality is carried out to investigate the recirculation of ozone. Ozone is transported to eastward under strong synoptic condition (Case_strong) because of westerly synoptic flow and this pattern can confirm in all domain. However ozone swept off by the land breeze and then transported to northward along sea breeze under conditions of clear sky and weak winds (Case_weak). In this case re-advected ozone isn't simulate in Domain S. The study found that recirculation of airmass must be concerned when numerical simulation of air quality is performed in coastal region, especially on a sunny day.
Seasonal threshold values for fog detection over the ten airport areas in the Korean Peninsula have been derived, using the satellite-observed data of polar-orbit (Aqua/Terra MODIS) and geostationary (GOES-9) during two years. The values are obtained from reflectance at $0.65{\mu}m\;(R_{0.65})$ and the difference in brightness temperature between $3.7{\mu}m\;and\;11{\mu}m\;(T_{3.7-11})$. In order to examine the discrepancy between the threshold values of two kinds of satellites, the following parameters have been analyzed under the condition of daytime/nighttime and fog/clear-sky, utilizing their simultaneous observations over the Seoul Metropolitan Area. The parameters are the brightness temperature at $3.7{\mu}m\;(T_{3.7})$, the temperature at $11{\mu}m\;(T_{11}$, and $T_{3.7-11}$ for day and night. The $R_{0.65}$ data are additionally included in the daytime. The GOES-9 thresholds over the seven airport areas except the Cheongju airport have revealed the accuracy of 50% in the daytime and 70% in the nighttime, based on statistical verification for the independent samples as follows; FAR, POD and CSI. However, the accuracy decreases in the foggy cases with twilight, precipitation, short persistence, or the higher cloud above fog.
Accurate cloud discrimination in satellite images strongly affects accuracy of remotely sensed parameter produced using it. Especially, cloud contaminated pixel over ocean is one of the major error factors such as Sea Surface Temperature (SST), ocean color, and chlorophyll-a retrievals,so accurate cloud detection is essential process and it can lead to understand ocean circulation. However, static threshold method using real-time algorithm such as Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) can't fully explained reflectance variability over ocean as a function of relative positions between the sun - sea surface - satellite. In this paper, we assembled a reflectance spectral library as a function of Solar Zenith Angle (SZA) and Viewing Zenith Angle (VZA) from ocean surface reflectance with clear sky condition of Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) identified by NOAA's cloud products and spectral library is used for applying the Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) to detect cloud pixels. We compared qualitatively between AHI cloud property and our results and it showed that AHI cloud property had general tendency toward overestimation and wrongly detected clear as unknown at high SZA. We validated by visual inspection with coincident imagery and it is generally appropriate.
Observation of hydrometeors' behavior in the atmosphere is important to understand weather and climate. By conventional observations, we can get the distribution of water vapor at limited number of points on the earth. In this study, the precipitable water has been estimated from the split window channel data on GMS-5 based upon the technique developed by Chesters et al.(1983). To retrieve the precipitable water, water vapor absorption parameter depending on filter function of sensor has been derived using the regression analysis between the split window channel data and the radiosonde data observed at Osan, Pohang, Kwangiu and Cheju staions for 4 months. The air temperature of 700 hPa from the Global Spectral Model of Korea Meteorological Administration (GSM/KMA) has been used as mean air temperature for single layer radiation model. The retrieved precipitable water for the period from August 1996 through December 1996 are compared to radiosonde data. It is shown that the root mean square differences between radiosonde observations and the GMS-5 retrievals range from 0.65 g/$cm^2$ to 1.09 g/$cm^2$ with correlation coefficient of 0.46 on hourly basis. The monthly distribution of precipitable water from GMS-5 shows almost good representation in large scale. Precipitable water is produced 4 times a day at Korea Meteorological Administration in the form of grid point data with 0.5 degree lat./lon. resolution. The data can be used in the objective analysis for numerical weather prediction and to increase the accuracy of humidity analysis especially under clear sky condition. And also, the data is a useful complement to existing data set for climatological research. But it is necessary to get higher correlation between radiosonde observations and the GMS-5 retrievals for operational applications.
$NO_2$ vertical column densities were retrieved via ground based Multi-Axis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) measurements for the first time for 6 months over the spring season in 2007 and 2008 in Seoul, one the megacities in the Northeast Asia. The retrieved $NO_2$ vertical column densities were compared with those obtained from space borneOzone Monitoring Instrument (OMI). Over the entire measurement period, the $NO_2$ vertical column densities measured by MAX-DOAS ranged from $1.0{\times}10^{15}molec{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ to $6.0{\times}10^{16}molec{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ while those obtained by OMI ranged $1.0{\times}10^{15}molec{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ to $7.0{\times}10^{16}molec{\cdot}cm^{-2}$. The correlation coefficient between $NO_2$ vertical column densities obtained from MAX-DOAS and OMI is 0.73 for the entire measurement period whereas the correlation coefficient of 0.85 is found for the dates under the clear sky condition. The cloudy condition is thought to play a major role in increase in uncertainty of the retrieved OMI $NO_2$ vertical column densities since air mass factor may induce high uncertainty due to the lack of cloud and aerosol vertical distribution information.
Recently, urban planning with consideration of urban climate, represented by the concept of urban ventilation lane is widely practiced in many countries. The concept of urban ventilation lane is mainly aimed to improve the thermal comfort within urban area in summer season. It has also the aim to reduce the urban air pollution by natural cold air drainage flows which are to be intensified by a suitable alignment of buildings as well as use zonings based on scientific reasons. In this study, the prevailing wind ventilation lane of a local wind circulation and around Daegu for a typical summer days was investigated by using a numerical simulation. The transport of air pollutants by the local circulation winds was also investigated by using the numerical simulation model, the RAMS (Reasonal Atmospheric Model System). The domain of interest is the vicinity of Daegu metropolitan city (about 900 km2). The horizontal scale of the area is about 30 km. The simulations were conducted under a late spring synoptic condition with weak gradient wind and almost clear sky. From the numerical experiment, the following three conclusions were obtained: (1) The major wind passages of the local circulation wind generated by radiative cooling over the representative mountains of Daegu (Mt. Palgong and Mt. Ap) were found. The winds blow down along the valley axis over the eastern part of Daegu as a gravity flow during nighttime. (2) At the flatland, the winds blow toward the western part of Daegu through the city center. (3) As the results, the air pollutants were transported toward the western part of Daegu by the winds during nighttime.

Solar radiation is an important meteorological factor in the agricultural sector. The ground exposed to sunlight is highly influenced by the surrounding terrains especially in South Korea where the topology is complex. The solar radiation on an inclined surface is estimated using a solar irradiance correction factor for the slope of the terrain along with the solar radiation on a horizontal surface. However, such an estimation method assumes that there is no barrier in surroundings, which blocks sunlight from the sky. This would result in errors in estimation of solar radiation because the effect of shading caused by the surrounding terrain has not been taken into account sufficiently. In this study, the shading effect was simulated to obtain the brightness value (BV), which was used as a correction factor. The shaded relief images, which were generated using a 30m-resolution digital elevation model (DEM), were used to derive the BVs. These images were also prepared using the position of the sun and the relief of the terrain as inputs. The gridded data where the variation of direct solar radiation was quantified as brightness were obtained. The value of cells in the gridded data ranged from 0 (the darkest value) to 255 (the brightest value). The BV analysis was performed using meteorological observation data at 22 stations installed in study area. The observed insolation was compared with the BV of each point under clear and cloudless condition. It was found that brightness values were significantly correlated with the solar radiation, which confirmed that shading due to terrain could explain the variation in direct solar radiation. Further studies are needed to accurately estimate detailed solar radiation using shaded relief images and brightness values.
Seasonal threshold values for fog detection over the ten airport areas within the Korean Peninsula have been derived from the data of polar-orbit Aqua/Terra MODIS and geostationary GOES-9 during a two years. The values are obtained from reflectance at $0.65{\mu}m\;(R_{0.65})$ and the difference in brightness temperature between $3.7{\mu}m\;and\;11{\mu}m\;(T_{3.7-11})$. In order to examine the discrepancy between the threshold values of two kinds of satellites, the following four parameters have been analyzed under the condition of daytime/nighttime and fog/clear-sky, utilizing their simultaneous observations over the Seoul metropolitan area: brightness temperature at $3.7{\mu}m$, the temperature at $11{\mu}m,\;the\;T_{3.7-11}$ for day and night, and the $R_{0.65}$ for daytime. The parameters show significant correlations (r<0.5) in spatial distribution between the two kinds of satellites. The discrepancy between their infrared thresholds is mainly due to the disagreement in their spatial resolutions and spectral bands, particularly at $3.7{\mu}m$. Fog detection from GOES-9 over the nine airport areas except the Cheongju airport has revealed accuracy of 60% in the daytime and 70% in the nighttime, based on statistical verification. The accuracy decreases in foggy cases with twilight, precipitation, short persistence, or the higher cloud above fog. The sensitivity of radiance and reflectance with wavelength has been analyzed in numerical experiments with respect to various meteorological conditions to investigate optical characteristics of the three channels.
