Nanocomposites of polypropylene with organically modified clays were compounded on a twin-screw extruder by two-step melt compounding of three components, i.e., polypropylene, maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MA), and organically modified clay. The effect of PP-g-MA compatibilizers, including PH-200, Epolene-43, Polybond-3002, Polybond-3200, with a wide range of maleic anhydride (MA) content and molecular weight was examined. Morphologies of nanocomposites and their mechanical properties such as stiffness, strength, and impact resistance were investigated. X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the dispersion morphology of clay particles seemed to be determined in the first compounding step and the further dispersion of clays didn't occur in the second compounding step. As the ratio of PP-g-MA to clay increased, the clay particles were dispersed more uniformly in the matrix resin. As the dispersibility of clays was enhanced, the reinforcement effect of the clays increased, however impact resistance decreased.
The effect of $SrCO_3$ content on the microstructure, porosity, flexural strength, and pore size distribution of clay-based membrane supports was investigated. Green compacts prepared from low cost materials such as kaolin, bentonite, talc, sodium borate, and strontium carbonate were sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 8 h in air. It was possible to control the porosity of the clay-based membrane supports within the range of 33% to 37% by adjusting the $SrCO_3$ content. The flexural strength of the clay-based membrane supports was found to strongly depend on their porosity. In turn, the porosity was affected by the $SrCO_3$ content. The average pore size and flexural strength of the clay-based membrane supports containing 4 wt% $SrCO_3$ were $0.62{\mu}m$ and 33 MPa at 34% porosity.
The nano-clay is widely used in polymer-nanocomposites due to the high aspect ratio, heat resistance and nano-scale dimension. In recent researches, the thermal and mechanical properties of polyurethane foam were improved with introducing the nano-clay. In this study, we describe the influence of ultrasonic treatment and content of nano-clay on properties of polyurethane foam. The nano-clay/polyurethane foam were characterized using their recovery time, compressive deflection, cell morphology and tensile test. The ultrasonic treatment was very effective for dispersion of nano-clay. Moreover, we found that introducing over 3 wt% of nano-clay bring the decrease of properties due to the poor dispersion. Expecially, ultrasonically treated 20A/polyurethane foam(1 wt%) showed greatly improved properties, such as homogeneous cell size and good dimension stability. We expect that our results could be applied to insulating materials for construction.

This research focused on the intercalation behavior of recrystallized ibuprofen into clay as a sustained release drug carrier. The intercalation behaviors of ibuprofen were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The basal spacing ($d_{001}$) of clay increased from 1.2 nm to 1.5 nm by ibuprofen molecules. The segmental motion effect of ibuprofen into the clay interlayer spacing also increased the thermal stability of the ibuprofen/clay nanocomposites. The in vitro drug release results of nanocomposites showed that ibuprofen was released from clay steadily.

As the preliminary works for the preparation of exfoliated nanocomposites by reactive extrusion (REX) the modified anionic polymerization proceeded in a flask using an $\varepsilon$-caprolactam, catalyst, initiator, and clay. Polymerization methods were classified with a variation of the clay adding time. Intercalations mechanism of clay layers was investigated by measuring the WAXD peaks of clay with polymerization. In the preparation of nanocomposites, the molecular weight of nylon 6 was affected by the clay content. From the mechanical property measurement, improved properties were obtained in comparison to the neat nylon 6, and these properties were also affected by the molecular weight.
To prepare the alumina cement free vibrated alumina castable, $\rho$-alumina is employed as a binder material, and nano-sized clay is added to enhance the curing strength and give thixotropic behavior. The rheological behavior of matrix of castable is controlled by investigating the influences of ultrafines, $\rho$-alumina, and nano-sized clay on the viscosity of matrix. The microsilica and ultrafine alumina were added 3 wt% and 4 wt%, respectively to the matrix, which showed that the viscosities tends to be lowest values. The rheological property of the matrix is well established by adding $\rho$-alumina as 8 wt% and clay as 4 wt%. The thixotropic behavior of the $\rho$-alumina bonded castable was appeared by introducing nano-sized clay into the matrix and adjusting the pH near to the PZC of the clay suspension.

In this wort, the $Na^+-MMT$ has organically modified with silane intercalant to prepare the polymer/clay nanocomposites. The pH. X-ray diffraction (XRD), and contact angles were used to analyze the surface properties of clay and the exfoliation phenomenon of clay interlayer, The mechanical interfacial properties of epoxy/clay nanocomposites were investigated by three-point bending test. From the experimental results. the surface modification made by silane intercalant on clay surface leads to an increase of distance of silicate layers, surface acid value. and electron acceptor parameter of organoclay. The treatments are also necessary and useful for epoxy to intercalate into the interlayer by interacting of electron donor-accepter between basic epoxy and clay surface. The mechanical interfacial properties of the nanocomposites was improved by the presence of dispersed clay nanolayer containing low content of organoclay in comparison with the conventional, which increase the interfacial adhesion between dispersed clay and epoxy resins.

In this work, we investigated clay and raw materials from China (black clay, red clay, white clay) and Korea (Cheonan clay, Obu clay) used for the manufacture of porcelain products. According to chemical analysis results, feldspar components containing CaO, K2O, Na2O and quartz are found in clay materials besides primary clay such as kaollinte, for the clay materials from Korea, which is found more in clay materials from Korea than from China. For the Fe2O3 content, governing whiteness of porcelain products, more iron oxide (> 5 %) is found in Korean clays (Cheonan clay, obu clay, red clay) compared to those form China (black, white clay). Through X-ray diffraction analysis, kaolinite and Halloysite are found to be main phases for all the raw materials and second phases such as quartz and pyrophyllite are found. Using these clay materials, raw materials for porcelain products were produced, and the physicochemical properties were investigated for sintered samples. Absorption rate is in order of Baekja-A < Baekja-B < Yeonbuncheong < Jinbuncheong < Cheongja, and the sample, sintered at 1250℃ in reductive atmosphere, exhibits the lowest absorption rate. Comparing the color of the sintered samples, the samples sintered in oxidative atmosphere (L* value: 86~95 %) show higher whiteness value than those sintered in reductive atmosphere (L* value: 81~93 %). For the Cheongja and Buncheong, the samples sintered in reductive atmosphre shows higher whiteness, L* values, and low a*/b* value, which is due to reduction of iron oxide (Fe2O3).
The fast-neutron shielding behaviour (FNSB) of two clay-materials (Ball clay and Kaolin)of Southwestern Nigeria ($7.49^{\circ}N$, $4.55^{\circ}E$) have been investigated using effective removal cross section, ${\Sigma}_R(cm^{-1})$, mass removal cross section, ${\Sigma}_{R/{\rho}}(cm^2g^{-1})$ and Mean free path, ${\lambda}$ (cm). These parameters decide neutron shielding behaviour of any material. A computer program - WinNC-Toolkit has been used for computation of these parameters. The toolkit evaluates these parameters by using elemental compositions and densities of samples. The proficiency of WinNC-Toolkit code was probe by using MCNPX and GEANT4 to model fast neutron transmission of the samples under narrow beam geometry, intending to represent the actual experimental setup. Direct calculation of effective removal cross section ($cm^{-1}$) of the samples was also carried out. The results from each of the methods for each types of the studied clay-materials (Ball clay and Kaolin) shows similar trend. The trend might be the fingerprint of water content retained in each of the samples being baked at different temperature. The compositions of each sample have been obtained by Particle-Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) technique (Tandem Pelletron Accelerator: 1.7 MV, Model 5SDH). The FNSB of the selected clay-materials have been compared with standard concrete. The cognizance of various factors such as availability, thermo-chemical stability and water retaining ability by the clay-samples can be analyzed for efficacy of the material for their FNSB.

A massive amount of marine clay produced as dredging of coast and sea bed is often dumped in open sea and filled in pond. The treatment of marine clay demand a large area and make fatal environmental problems for echo system. This research work intend to manufacture a light-weight landfill materials which are produced by mixing the dredged marine clay with various amount cement and foam. An extensive Uniaxial and Triaxial compression test are carried out to investigate the strength characteristics of the light-weight cement mixed marine clay with foam under various test conditions. The results indicated that the required unit weight has been achieved with negligible change after 28days curing time in water. It is also recognized that the compressive strength of light-weight landfill materials linearly decrease with increasing initial water content, and the rate of strength decrease with increasing initial water content in water curing was smaller than that of air curing Futhermore, the rate of strength decreased with increasing initial water content, however, the rate become smaller as cement content increased.
