  • Strategic plan of Subaru science and operation will be introduced. Currently, Subaru has wide variety of instruments, conducts only classical observations, with less than 5 nights allocation for each proposal. Near future, Subaru will emphasize on surveys, introduce queue mode observations, reduce the number of instruments, and concentrate on large size programs. Large surveys are called Subaru Strategic Programs (SSPs). HSC-SSP is on-going (300 nights for 5 years), PFS-SSP will start at around 2020 (360 nights for 5 years), and IRD-SSP from 2016 (TBD). HSC science includes 1) cosmology with gravitational lensing, 2) lensing studies of galaxies and clusters, 3) photometric redshifts, 4) the Solar system, 5) the Milky Way and the Local Group, 6) AGN/quasars, 7) transients, 8) galaxies at low/high redshifts, and 9) clusters of galaxies. PFS science includes 1) cosmology, 2) galaxy & AGN, and 3) galactic archaeology. Subaru is planning the third pillar instrument, so called ULTIMATE-Subaru, which is the GLAO optical-NIR wide field camera & multi-IFU spectrograph for finding galaxies at ultra high redshift (z>10). Finally the strategy from Subaru to TMT will be presented. Subaru will conduct four major SSPs (HSC, PFS, IRD, ULTIMATE-Subaru) in coming decade to provide targets to TMT. HSC performs wide field surveys to reveal the distribution of dark matter in the Universe. IRD surveys Earth-like young planets to discover ~20 Earth-like habitable planets. PFS studies the expanding Universe to provide a few million emission line galaxies to TMT.

  • The museum has been developed and changed variety by a social change and extention of its concept and social role. At modem times, context is a important fact in museum architecture in the city. These mean that museum architecture is combined with rather the relationship its surroundings than completion its constructing. Recently, Many studies were continued on the assumption that the function and role of museum has been changed variety by a social change. But most of them were centered on changing choronogical typology of museum layouts and classifing morphology of museum. This study is to analyze harmony and connection about pinakothek der moderne with surounding conditions and to know how to design its spacial configuration. As a result of this study, firstly, it was confirmed that pinakothek der moderne came up with an idea which was design method about planning of modern museum in classic museums district. Seondly, it come under the modern museum but has classical spacial form and faculty. These mean that it is not only a solution about required functions but also a trial that is a significance for solving historical context and esteeming the classic space.

  • The classical queuing analysis has been tremendously useful in doing capacity planning and performance prediction. However, in many real-world cases. it has found that the predicted results form a queuing analysis differ substantially from the actual observed performance. Specially, in recent years, a number of studies have demonstrated that for some environments, the traffic pattern is self-similar rather than Poisson. In this paper, we study these self-similar traffic characteristics and the definition of self-similar stochastic processes. Then, we consider the examples of self-similar data traffic, which is reported from recent measurement studies. Finally, we wish you that it makes out about the characteristics of actual data traffic more easily.

  • Although power analysis is of important tool of research, investigators in veterinary medicine are unaware of the concepts of the statistical power. Two types of error occur in classical hypothesis testing and, those errors should be avoided, if possible. Since power is highly dependent on the sample size, whenever declaring non-statistically significant result they should consider the potential for committing a Type II error in their studies, which refers to the probability of falsely stating that two treatments are equivalent despite true difference between them. Also, sample size determination is one of the most important tasks facing the researcher when planning a diagnostic study, and provides valuable information on the characteristics of a test performance. This type of analysis forms the basis for proper interpretation of test results. The aim of this article was to re-evaluate some selected studies on diagnostic test reported in the domestic veterinary publications to determine the power and necessary sample size for inequality testing to ensure the desired power. Power calculations were illustrated using real-life examples of comparison of a new test and a reference test for detecting antibodies of various animal diseases. Factors affecting to the power were also discussed.

  • This study was firstly to reflect upon the background of the generation and the urban spatial value and significance of the medieval plaza. The main aim of this study was to extract the spatial determinants which give the great influence on the formation of the medieval plaza and in addition the endogenous rules and aesthetical grounds regarding the respective elements. Especially they could be applied to the design guideline. They are dimension(volume and scale), shape, elevation as the morphological elements and enclosure, proportion, grade difference, spatial sequence and plaza group as the spatial determinants and visual sequence, visual or spatial boundary, approaching axis and perspective effect as the aesthetic and visual elements and function(use), human behaviour as the social-behavioral elements and otherwise, for instance, plaza furniture, ground decoration and vegetation. This study was intended to analyze each elements based on the classical historical literatures and to suggest the planning conditions for composing the ideal plaza referring to the cases and literature review on the medieval plaza and finally is expected to contribute to the plaza design methodology.

  • In June, the City of Seoul held a design competition for $\ulcorner$Seoul Park$\lrcorner$in Paris to promote friendly relations with its sister city. The purpose of this paper is to articulate the design concept of a scheme submitted by the author. The author interpreted the object of this design competition as follows: if we regards a park not as one of urban planning facilities but as a space for expressing a culture, $\ulcorner$Seoul Park$\lrcorner$in Paris is a space expressing Korean culture, or a culture of the City of Seoul in Paris, France. Three points were emphasized in this scheme: 1. Physical and non-physical aspects of Korean culture, or a culture of the City of Seoul were expressed separately. In physical part, a traditional Korean garden was reappeared to express its authenticity compared to its counterpart, French classical garden - its formal and grand style. In nonphysical part, Seoul's features and its citizen's facial expression were engraved on 'free standing walls' named 'Seoul Expression'. In addition, Korean traditional and modern performing arts will be performed in a square named as 'Seoul madang' surrounded by the free standing walls. 2. A space clearly divided by the fence was necessary to distinguish a traditional Korean garden from the place which looks like an amusement park. Traditional wall, mounding and pine tree groves were included. 3. Bamboo grove with the way taking a walk was introduced. The author expected that Parisian feels oriental mystery, the sound of wind, and the time lag of past and present in this sounding bamboo grove.

  • The purpose of this study was to explain the uniqueness of tropical space style by identifying it in Southeast Asia. For this purpose, literature review was examined from 26 specialized tropical space style books and categorized. Its results are expected to be used as reference materials in designing spaces related to Southeast Asia and for constructors planning to run their business in Southeast Asia or Korea. The results of categorization are as follows; 'Tropical Traditional', 'Tropical Colonial' and 'Tropical Modern'. First, in case of Tropical Traditional Style, the traditional styles are adopted in roof and some of traditional styles are adopted in walls, windows and doors. Second, in case of Tropical Colonial Style, Renaissance or neo-classical styles are adopted in most of columns, archs, windows and doors. The traditional styles are also blended. Third, in case of Tropical Modern Style, straight line designs are adopted dominantly. However, decorative objects of traditional style are used to catch eyes. In summary, traditional style are imbedded more or less in all of tropical style and particularly, decorative objects of traditional style are key elements representing tropical space.

  • A novel converged optical network unit (ONU)-base station (BS) architecture has been contemplated for next-generation optical-wireless networks. It has been demonstrated through high quality studies that data traffic carried by both wired and wireless networks exhibit self-similar and long range dependent characteristics; attributes that classical teletraffic theory based on simplistic Poisson models fail to capture. Therefore, in order to apprehend the proposed converged architecture and to reinforce the provisioning of tightly bound quality of service (QoS) parameters to end-users, we substantiate the analysis of the QoS behavior of the ONU-BS under self-similar and long range dependent traffic conditions using custom queuing which is a common queuing discipline. This paper extends our previous work on priority queuing and brings novelty in terms of presenting performance analysis of the converged ONU-BS under realistic traffic load conditions. Further, the presented analysis can be used as a network planning and optimization tool to select the most robust and appropriate queuing discipline for the ONU-BS relevant to the QoS requirements of different applications.

  • This paper presents the conceptual framework for estimating and predicting system's susceptibility to failure as function of condition parameter value which is representing the current status of performance measure using on-line performance reliability. The performance of such system depends on one parameter with a probability distribution that degrades with time gracefully. Performance reliability represents the probability that physical performance will remain satisfactory over a finite period of time or usage cycles in the future. An empirical physical performance function is constructed to incorporate explanatory variables (operating and environmental conditions) over a time or usage dimension. This function enables one to model device performance and the associated classical reliability measures simultaneously, in the performance domain and time domain. The conditional performance reliability structure developed represents a tool to predict system performance over time or usage for next usage period. By enabling such a framework, it can bring us more efficient planning and execution in system's operation control as well as maintenance to reduce costs and/or increase profits.

  • Case-Based Reasoning(CBR) offers a new approach for developing knowledge based systems. CBR has several research issues which can be divided into two categories : (1) static issues and (2) dynamic issues. The static issues are related to case representation scheme and case data model, that is, focus on casebase which is a repository of cases. The dynamic issues, on the other hand, are related to case retrieval procedure and problem solving process, i.e. case adaptation phase. This research is forcused on retrieval procedure Traditional query processing accepts precisely specified queries and only provides exact answers, thus requiring users to fully understand the problem domain and the casebase schema, but returning limited or even null information if the exact answer is not available. To remedy such a restriction, extending the classical notion of query answering to approximate query answering(AQA) has been explored. AQA can be achieved by neighborhood query answering or associative query answering. In this paper, neighborhood query answering technique is used for AQA. To reinforce the CBR process, a new retrieval procedure(cooperative CBR) using neighborhood query answering is proposed. An neighborhood query answering relaxes a query scope to enlarge the search range, or relaxes an answer scope to include additional information. Computer Aided Process Planning(CAPP) is selected as cooperative CBR application domain for test. CAPP is an essential key for achieving CIM. It is the bridge between CAD and CAM and translates the design information into manufacturing instructions. As a result of the test, it is approved that the problem solving ability of cooperative CBR is improved by relaxation technique.
