Genomic DNAs (gDNAs) were isolated from the hard clam ($Meretrix$$lusoria$, Roding, 1798) populations of Gunsan located in the Yellow Sea of the Korean peninsula. Genetic distances among different individuals of the LSCP (light shell color population) population of the hard clam (lane 1-11), GSCP (grey shell color population) population of the hard clam (lane 12-22) and DSCP (dark shell color population) population of the hard clam (lane 23-33), respectively, were generated using Systat version 10 according to the bandsharing values and similarity matrix. The dendrogram, generated by seven reliable oligonucleotides primers, indicates 3 genetic clusters. LSCP population could be evidently discriminated with the other two populations among three populations. The longest genetic distance (0.801) was found to exist between individuals in the two populations, between individuals' no. 33 of the DSCP population and no. 06 of the LSCP population. The higher fragment sizes (>2,000 bp) are much more observed in the GSCP population. Three hard clam populations can be clearly distinguished, especially, by their morphological characters and PCR-based approach.
Regional variation in the fatty acid content of shellfish was investigated on 5 species of Korean shellfish including murex shell, ark shell, jack-knife clam, orient hard clam, and little neck clam that were originated from 2 geographically different regions in Korea (Region 1: South coast, $34-35^{\circ}N$, $127-129^{\circ}E$; Region 2: West coast, $36-38^{\circ}N$, $126-127^{\circ}E$). Significant regional difference in total fatty acids content was observed in murex shell and little neck clam (p<0.01), but not in the other species of shellfish. The contents of saturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids, and polyunsaturated fatty acids including n-3 and n-6 fatty acids were appreciably higher in murex shell from Region 2 and in little neck clam from Region 1 than the shellfish originated from their counterpart areas (p<0.05). Nevertheless, relative percentages of the fatty acids remained constant within same species regardless of geographic regions or species. Considering the facts of that the fish/shellfish are unique sources of n-3 fatty acids and a little neck clam is the most-consumed shellfish in Korea, n-3 fatty acids intake might vary with the habitat of the shellfish that Koreans consume.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to find out how the back instability during clam exercise (CE) causes changes in pelvic rotation and hip joint abductor muscle activity, and to find out the effects with different methods of application of pressure biofeedback. Design: Comparative study using repeated measures. Methods: Each subjects performed the clam exercise (CE) without pressure biofeedback, the clam exercise with pressure biofeedback applied to the back (CE-PBU to back), and the clam exercise with pressure biofeedback applied to the side (CE-PBU to side). The amount of pelvic rotation was measured using myomotion. And the muscle activity of the muscle gluteus medius and the tensor fasciae latae was measured using EMG device. One-way repeated measures ANOVA followed by the Bonferroni post test were used to compare the EMG activity in each muscle and pelvic rotation angle during the CE, CE-PBU to back, CE-PBU to side. Results: The amounts of pelvic rotation was the lowest in CE-PBU to back (p< 0.05) and the ratio of muscle activity of the muscle gluteus / tensor fasciae latae was the highest in CE-PBU to back (p< 0.05). Conclusions: It is thought that, in order to stabilize the waist-pelvis and increase hip joint muscle strength in subjects with back instability, applying clam exercise with pressure biofeedback applied to the lower back is effective in improving waist-pelvic movements and selectively strengthening the muscle gluteus medius.
The PCR analysis was performed on DNA samples extracted from a total of 20 individuals using six oligonucleotides primers. The author accomplished clustering analyses to reveal the Euclidean genetic distances among four clam populations from Gochang, Seocheon, Taean and Anmyeon of the Korean peninsula. The oligonucleotides primer OPA-08 generated 5 unique loci to each population, approximately 550 bp and 600 bp, respectively, in the MCS population. Especially, the primer OPA-20 generated 15 unique loci to each population, which were identifying each population, approximately 400 bp, 750 bp and 800 bp, in the MCT population. Individuals from MCG clam population ($0.637{\pm}0.227$) exhibited higher band-sharing values than did individuals from MCG clam population ($0.402{\pm}0.115$) (P<0.05). The dendrogram obtained by the six oligonucleotides primers indicates four genetic clusters: cluster 1 (MCG 01, 02, 04 and 05), cluster 2 (MCS 06, 07, 08, 09 and 10), cluster 3 (MCT 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15) and cluster 4 (MCA 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 and MCG 03). Among the twenty clam individuals, the shortest genetic distance that displayed significant molecular differences was between individuals 14 and 15 from the MCT population (genetic distance = 0.094), while the longest genetic distance among the twenty individuals that displayed significant molecular differences was between individuals MCG no. 01 and MCG no. 02 (genetic distance = 0.687). Comparatively, individuals of MCS clam population were fairly closely related to that of MCT clam population, as shown in the hierarchical dendrogram of Euclidean genetic distances.

This paper is to study population ecological characteristics, including growth parameters, survival rate, instantaneous coefficients of natural and fishing mortalities, and age at first capture of the soft-shelled clam, Mya japonioa in the intertidal zone of South Sea in Korea. For describing growth of the clam a von Bertalanffy growth model was adopted, The von Bertalanffy growth curve had an additive error structure and the growth parameters estimated from a non-linear regression were SH/sub ∞/=79.83mm, K=0.26, and t/sub 0/= -0.01. Survival rate (S) of the soft-shelled clam was 0.26 (SD=0.02). The instantaneous coefficients of natural mortality (M) was estimated to be 0.78/year and fishing mortality (F) 0.57/year for the soft-shelled clam. The age at first capture (t/sub c/) was estimated as 2.69 year. The mean densities of the soft-shelled clam by bottom type were 3.40 inds./m²(SE=0.18) in the sand, 63.4 inds./m²(SE= 0.53) in the muddy sand, and 0 inds./m2 (SE=0) in the gravelly sand. The mean densities of the soft-shelled clam by 3 different areas were 4.88 inds./m²(SE=0.09), 2.61 inds./m²(SE=0.13), 7.20 inds./m²(SE=0.18), respectively and the biomass of the clam were estimated as 131mt, 121mt, 665mt, respectively. An yield-per-recruit analysis showed that the current yield-per-recruit of about 8.30g with F=0.57/year and the age at first capture (t/sub c/) 2.69 year, was lower than the maximum possible yield-per-recruit of 9.60g. Fixing to at the current level and increased fishing intensity (F) could produce an increase in the predicted yield-per-recruit from 8.30g to about 9.40. However, estimated yield-per-recruit increased to 1.30g by decreasing to from the current age (2.69 year) to age two with F fixed at the current level. Yield-per-recruit was estimated under harvest strategies based on F/sub max/ and F/sub 0.1/.
The clam, Gomphina melanaegis, which is commonly called the sandy beach clam because of its habitat, is a valuable organism in the sandy coast of East Sea, Korea. It is frequently observed in large populations between 0.5 and 5 meters. We have released 50,000 seedling, ranging from the diameter of approximately 3 mm, 2007, and 1,000,000 seedling, ranging from the diameter of approximately 0.2 mm, plus 100,000 adult individuals, ranging from the shell length of approximately 20~40 mm, 2008 at Jinha beach. The spawning period of G. melanaegis, was from June to August, and the main spawning occurred in July. This investigation was carried out to elucidate population distribution on the stocking area of sandy beach clam, G. melanaegis. The relationship between shell length and ring radius in each ring was investigated as a regression line. The relationship between the shell length and shell height of released young clam was SH=1.0105SL-4.7764 ($R^2=0.7905$). The relationship between the shell length and total weight of released young clam was $TW=0.0013SL^{2.3966}$($R^2=0.71$). It draws a deduction that the ring of this clam was produced once a year during the duration between June and August.

Perkinsus sp. has been identified as responsible organism for the decrease in Manil clam production along the west and south coast of Korea. Monthly investigation on infection intensity and pathology of Perkinsus infected Manila clam population was carried out in Komsoe Bay located in the west coast during February and December 1999. About one hundred clams were collected each month for the analysis. Infected clams were incubated in fluid thioglycollate media over a week, stained with iodine solution, digested with 2M NaOH and the number of Perkinsus present in an individual recorded. Histological slides were also prepared from infected clams and their pathologic symptoms were examined using a microscope. Trophozoites of Perkinsus sp. were dominantly distributed on gills and epithelia of digestive glands however a few numbers could be detected at siphons and foot tissues. Heavily infected clams often exhibited white spots on mantle and foot tissues due to the inflammatory reaction of the hemocytes, forming nodules. Trophozoites were also found along the connective tissues of follicles during spawning season indicating that Perkinsus sp. may disturb reproduction of the clam. Total number of Perkinsus sp. in an individual clam varied from none to 9, 550, 000 with a monthly mean of 279, 663 to 2, 198, 558 during the course of study. The number of Perkinsus sp. in the clam was found to lowest durin July and August when unusually low salinity was recorded in this area due to the heavy rain. Highest monthly infection intensity in terms of total number of Perkinsus sp. i clam was observed in February, when water temperature recorded as lowest during the study. Small size of clams with shell length of ten mm or less were not infected with Perkinsus sp. It was concluded that Perkinsus infection in Manila clam is in pa controlled by changes in salinity and clam growth; low salinity environment minimize infection intensity while tile clams get more Perkinsus as they grow.

In order to replace sardine baits for octopus pot, an efficacy experiment to lure with alternative bait (fermented skate or chicken skin in artificial crab or northern clam) pots and sardine pot were conducted in a circular water tank. The soaking time of the sardine bait was divided into two categories: six days or less and seven days or more. The behavioral response of octopus to the artificial bait pots and sardine pot were investigated. In the comparison of the luring effects between pots with fermented skate inside artificial crab or northern clam and sardine pot, the pot with artificial crab + fermented skate had better results than the other pots in the section distribution (31.6%) and the number of times the pot was entered into (20.0%) (p > 0.05). In the comparison of the luring effects between pots with chicken skin inside artificial crab or northern clam and sardine pot, the pot with northern clam + chicken skin had better results than the other pots in the section distribution (22.6%) and number of times the pot was entered into (55.6%) (p < 0.05). The results were also better compared to those of pot with artificial crab + fermented skate. From these results, it seems that in the luring effect aspect, sardine bait can be replaced with artificial bait consisting of chicken skin inside northern clam.

Air pollution problems due to the emission of pollutants from the various industrial facilities become serious issues and lots of air pollution control processes have been developed. To remove the SO$_2$ and NOx emitted from the solid waste incinerator and coal fired power plants, we studied the Ca-based sorbent which was prepared by waste clam and limestone. The objectives of this study were to develop a clam-based sorbent for removal of SO$_2$ and NOx, and to investigate the physicochemical properties of the waste clam sorbent. In order to determine acid gas removal capacity of sorbent, the batch study on SO$_2$ and NOx removal was performed with the Ca-based sorbent in the fixed bed reactor. Results of the research revealed that clam-based sorbent can be used as the iron-manufacturing industry and chemical adsorbents for the removal of acid gases because the lime content of the waste calm was more than 53.92%. From physicochemical analysis and gas reaction experiments, it could be concluded that clam is good sorbent for the removal of SO$_2$ and NOx in waste incinerator and flue gas desulfurization processes.

This study was performed to estimate biomass and to provide management plan through population ecological characteristics, including growth parameters, survival rate, instantaneous coefficient of natural and fishing mortalities, and age at first capture of hen clam, Mactra chinensis, in the Dong-li self-regulatory community of Busan. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters estimated from a non-linear regression were $SH_{\infty}=86.24mm$, K=0.12/year, and = -1.37year. Survival rate(s) of the hen clam was 0.515. The instantaneous coefficients of natural mortality(M) was estimated to be 0.232/year and fishing mortality(F) 0.432/year for hen clam. The current biomass of the hen clam in the study area was estimated to be 713mt and the acceptable biological catch(ABC) was estimated under various harvest strategies based on $F_{0.1}$ and $F_{40%}$.
