Development of Building Integrated PV(BIPV) module for the replacement of commercial building envelope materials (건물외피용 태양광발전 BIPV 모듈 개발 연구)

  • As Building Integrated Photovoltaic(BIPV) system replaces the conventional building finishing materials with PV modules, two function of electricity generation and building envelope can be expected. Therefore BIPV can be a good alternative technology for the 21 century environment-friendly buildings. The objective of this paper is to develope BIPV modules for a commercial buildings of which structure is mainly light-weight, curtain wall system. Two types of module are developed for a opaque part and a transparent part of building envelope. Current technology level and market status of Korea determines the configuration of developed BIPV modules. Architectural considerations for the integration of PV module to building envelope such as building structure, construction type, safety, regulation, maintenance etc. have been carefully reflected from the early stage of BIPV module design. Especially the survey result of current building envelope materials determines the size of unit BIPV modules and a unique cladding method for PV module installation is developed. Trial product of BIPV modules and cladding hardwares are manufactured and sample construction details for a demonstration building are proposed.

Effect of CrN barrier on fuel-clad chemical interaction

  • Chromium and chromium nitride were selected as potential barriers to prevent fuel-clad chemical interaction (FCCI) between the cladding and the fuel material. In this study, ferritic/martensitic HT-9 steel and misch metal were used to simulate the reaction between the cladding and fuel fission product, respectively. Radio frequency magnetron sputtering was used to deposit Cr and CrN films onto the cladding, and the gas flow rates of argon and nitrogen were fixed at certain values for each sample to control the deposition rate and the crystal structure of the films. The samples were heated for 24 h at 933 K through the diffusion couple test, and considerable amount of interdiffusion (max. thickness: $550{\mu}m$) occurred at the interface between HT-9 and misch metal when the argon and nitrogen were used individually. The elemental contents of misch metal were detected at the HT-9 through energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy due to the interdiffusion. However, the specimens that were sputtered by mixed gases (Ar and $N_2$) exhibited excellent resistance to FCCI. The thickness of these CrN films were only $4{\mu}m$, but these films effectively prevented the FCCI due to their high adhesion strength (frictional force ${\geq}1,200{\mu}m$) and dense columnar microstructures.

  • Two composites of five plies of STS/Al/Al/Al/STS and STS/Al/STS/Al/STS were produced by roll-cladding at $350^{\circ}C$ from ferritic stainless steel (STS) and aluminum (Al) sheets. In order to analyze the strain states during roll-cladding, the evolution of textures at different through-thickness positions in the roll-clad composites was investigated. Simulations with the finite element method (FEM) disclosed that a strain state which was similar to that of normal rolling with a high friction between roll surface and Al sample led to the formation of texture gradients in the Al sheets in the STS/Al/Al/Al/STS composite. Differences in the material velocity of STS and Al in the rolling direction gave rise to the formation of the shear texture in the Al sheets in the STS/Al/STS/Al/STS composite.

Deformation Characteristics of Zircaloy-4 Fuel Cladding due to Oxidation in Environment of High Temperature and Steam (고온, 수증기 속에서 산화된 질칼로이-4 핵연료 피복관의 변형 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Studies were conducted to determine the extent of oxidation and same of the mechanical property changes of Zircaloy-4 fuel cladding after it was exposed to hot steam environment. The purpose of these tests was to provide some informations on the embrittlement behavior of CANDU type fuel cladding, which could be experienced under the loss-of-coolant accident conditions. The Zircaloy fuel cladding tubes were exposed in a steam environment at the temperature of 90$0^{\circ}C$, 1,00$0^{\circ}C$. The growth of the ZrO$_2$ layer combined with an oxygen rich $\alpha$-phase layer into the Zircaloy tube material was found as a function of time t and temperature of steam exposure, E=1.1√Dt+0.002 where D is a temperature dependent diffusion coefficient. The tensile strength of the specimens exposed for a short period increased but decreased continuously with further exposure. The circumferential elongation was drastically changed with the exposure time while the hoop strength did't decrease greatly. The X-ray measurement of preferred orientation of the Zircaloy tube material indicated that grains in the as received tube were oriented such that the poles of the basal (0001) planes were predominantly radial, while the poles of the basal plane in the tube materials heattreated at 1,00$0^{\circ}C$ were oriented tangentially. It appears that this reoriented texture may contribute to lessening the decrease of the hoop strength of the heat treated Zircaloy tube material.

Evaluation of Microstructural and Mechanical Property of Medium-sized HT9 Cladding Forged Material for Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (소듐냉각고속로 피복관용 중형 HT9 단조품 소재의 미세조직 및 기계적 특성 평가)

  • Microstructural and mechanical property were evaluated at the medium-sized HT9 (12Cr-1MoWV) forged steel which was considered as primary candidate for the fuel cladding in sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR). Material was forged at $1170^{\circ}C$ after the induction melting to make round bar as 160mm diameter, 7000mm length then the radial distribution of microstructure as well as microhardness was evaluated. The results showed that overall microstructure exhibited as ferrite-martensite structure, where small amount (2~3%) of delta ferrite was formed throughout the specimen and maximum 15% of transformed ferrite was formed at the center, where it gradually decreased toward the radial direction. Sensitivity analysis of the cooling curve and Time-Temperature-Transformation (TTT) diagram revealed that formation of transformed ferrite could be avoided when the diameter was decreased down to 120mm.

  • Laser cladding process accompanies phase transformations from melting (on heating) through solidifying (on cooling) at the same time within a small material volume and to final solid phase. The phase transformations are not reversible, but an irreversible thermodynamic process; they accompany either absorption or release of thermal energy (referred to latent heat) during transformation. Yet, most analyses on materials processed by laser as a heat source have been performed on models of neglecting the latent heat in the process and those did not Justify the simplification. With literatures on the laser material process, we have not place an answer to how little the assumption affects on analyses. This led us to our current study: the effects of latent heat on thermo-mechanical analysis. To this end, we developed a fairly accurate program accommodating an algorithm for enforcing the latent heat whenever necessary and ran it combining with ABAQUS$^{TM}$. The simulation techniques we used in this study were verified by directly comparing our prediction with experimental publications elsewhere; our numerical results agreed accurately with the experiments. On the effects of the latent heat, we performed two alternatives about considering the latent heat in analysis, and compared each other. As a result, we found that more accurate conclusions might come out when considering the latent heat in process analyses.s.

Manufacturing of Ni-Cr-B-Si + WC/12Co Composite Coating Layer Using Laser Cladding Process and its Mechanical Properties (레이저 클래딩 공정을 이용한 Ni-Cr-B-Si + WC/12Co 복합 코팅층의 제조 및 기계적 특성)

  • In this study we manufacture a Ni-Cr-B-Si +WC/12Co composite coating layer on a Cu base material using a laser cladding (LC) process, and investigate the microstructural and mechanical properties of the LC coating and Ni electroplating layers (reference material). The initial powder used for the LC coating layer is a powder feedstock with an average particle size of $125{\mu}m$. To identify the microstructural and mechanical properties, OM, SEM, XRD, room and high temperature hardness, and wear tests are implemented. Microstructural observation of the initial powder and LC coating layer confirm the layer is composed mainly of ${\gamma}-Ni$ phases and WC and $Cr_{23}C_6$ carbides. The measured hardness of the LC coating and Ni electroplating layers are 653 and 154 Hv, respectively. The hardness measurement from room up to high temperatures of $700^{\circ}C$ result in a hardness decrease as the temperature increases, but the hardness of the LC coating layer is higher for all temperature conditions. Room temperature wear results show that the wear loss of the LC coating layer is 1/12 of the wear level of the Ni electroplating layer. The measured bond strength is also greater in the LC coating than the Ni electroplating.

Investigation of a best oxidation model and thermal margin analysis at high temperature under design extension conditions using SPACE

  • Zircaloy cladding oxidation is an important phenomenon for both design basis accident and severe accidents, because it results in cladding embrittlement and rapid fuel temperature escalation. For this reason during the last decade, many experts have been conducting experiments to identify the oxidation phenomena that occur under design basis accidents and to develop mathematical analysis models. However, since the study of design extension conditions (DEC) is relatively insufficient, it is essential to develop and validate a physical and mathematical model simulating the oxidation of the cladding material at high temperatures. In this study, the QUENCH-05 and -06 experiments were utilized to develop the best-fitted oxidation model and to validate the SPACE code modified with it under the design extension condition. It is found out that the cladding temperature and oxidation thickness predicted by the Cathcart-Pawel oxidation model at low temperature (T < 1853 K) and Urbanic-Heidrick at high temperature (T > 1853 K) were in excellent agreement with the data of the QUENCH experiments. For 'LOCA without SI' (Safety Injection) accidents, which should be considered in design extension conditions, it has been performed the evaluation of the operator action time to prevent core melting for the APR1400 plant using the modified SPACE. For the 'LBLOCA without SI' and 'SBLOCA without SI' accidents, it has been performed that sensitivity analysis for the operator action time in terms of the number of SIT (Safety Injection Tank), the recovery number of the SIP (Safety Injection Pump), and the break sizes for the SBLOCA. Also, with the extended acceptance criteria, it has been evaluated the available operator action time margin and the power margin. It is confirmed that the power can be enabled to uprate about 12% through best-estimate calculations.

Performance Analysis of The KALIMER Breakeven Core Driver Fuel Pin Based on Conceptual Design Parameters

  • Material properties such as coolant specific heat, film heat transfer coefficient, cladding thermal conductivity, surface diffusion coefficient of the multi-bubble are improved in MACSIS-Mod1. The axial power and flux profile module was also incorporated with irradiation history. The performance and feasibility of the updated driver fuel pin have been analyzed for nominal parameters based on the conceptual design for the KALIMER breakeven core by MACSIS-MOD1 code. The fuel slug centerline temperature takes the maximum at 700mm from the bottom of the slug in spite of the nearly symmetric axial power distribution. The cladding mid-wall and coolant temperatures take the maximum at the top of the pin. Temperature of the fuel slug surface over the entire irradiation life is much lower than the fuel-clad eutectic reaction temperature. The fission gas release of the driver fuel pin at the end of life is predicted to be $68.61\%$ and plenum pressure is too low to cause cladding yielding. The probability that the fuel pin would fail is estimated to be much less than that allowed in the design criteria. The maximum radial deformation of the fuel pin is $1.93\%$, satisfying the preliminary design criterion ($3\%$) for fuel pin deformation. Therefore the conceptual design parameters of the driver fuel pin for the KALIMER breakeven core are expected to satisfy the preliminary criteria on temperature, fluence limit, deformation limit etc.
